Ormsby has fitted his car with a set of front wheel brakes which enable him to run into the middle of the turns before he shuts off his motor. Lockhart's new motor is expected to enable him to give Ormsby a run for his money. The odds between the two men have shifted so often that any announcement is likely to be only an approximation. Jack Petticor is going to have the race of his life, it is expected, in the Italian Victory. Crown race and the 15-lap Valentino handicap with drivers like Bergers, Locklider, Allen, Sehrader, Young, Beck, Kingaley and others pitted against him. Myrne Wain of Cedar Rapids, Ia., and Jimmy Lusk of Glensburg, Ill., will drive their twin motored pocket valve machines in the motorbike races. The Thanksgiving Day road race course was christened this week with Marguerite De La Motte enticing the silken rope across the entrance. VESTA BATTERY RESISTS VIBRATION The Vesta Battery Corporation an institution of 27 years' standing, all of which time has been devoted exclusively to the manufacture of portable storage batteries. Vesta batteries in consequence of all these years of activity, always producing a product of high quality are known and distributed the world over. This success could not have been achieved, had it not been for the trained men with long years of battery service behind them, who left nothing undone as to chemical analysis of every bit of raw material used in developing this high standard product of today. This progress in their productive methods enable them to build this superintive quality and to sell at prices to compare with inferior graces. In the eVista isolator battery for Fords, there are patented features which enable it to withstand vibration and make it the most practical equipment. West Brothers are distributors in Orange-co and are very glad to tell more about this Vesta battery at any time. Plain Dealer Classified Ads produce results. Try this medium. Good performance alone does not imply that the owner is completely satisfied with his motor car, according to Charley Mann, local Dodge Brothers' dealer. "It takes good service, in addition to the good performance, to win his complete and enthusiastic endorsement," he said. He pointed out the fact that Dodge Brothers, while constantly improving the quality of their car and thus reducing the necessity for service, are at the same time giving the service question more and more attention as one of the fundamental issues. In the volume production and sale of automobiles. This month, for example, Dodge Brothers are advertising to the world. "Yoy Know in Advance—Dodge Brothers dealers everywhere have a fixed charge for every service operation." It is perhaps the first time that a large manufacturer has given such general prominence to the subject of service. "Dodge Brothers gave years of study to the development of a service plan that could be applied with equal fairness and efficiency to their entire organization of dealers," said Mr. Mann. "When this plan was finally evolved, it meant more years of intensive educational work in getting it established and in operation in the thousands of dealerships. Today they have arrived at the point where it can be truthfully said that any Dodge Brothers' owner, anywhere, can learn in advance just what it will cost him for any work that his car may require. Guesswork and unpleasant surprises in service bills have been eliminated." "The plan through which this enviable position was realized is known as the flat rate service system. Others have advocated it but in no case has it been so universally adopted." "I believe that this system has done more than was ever accomplished before to solidify and heighten the enthusiasm of Dodge Brothers motor cars owners." MENDOZA SELLS 89 TUBES IN MONTH Eighty-nine tires were sold during October by Roy Mendoza, an average of more than three per day. On Tuesday of this week Mendoza sold a pair of tires to L. R. Sommerville of Garden Grove-rd, who already had used Para-Bella on a trip to Arkansas and back. He had used them for 18 months in addition to the time on this trip. And they were on the rear of the machine. It's not the cough that takes us off. But the lack of good nutrition. Lower Calif. Radph DePalma, Idol of the speedways and king of the dirt track sport, has added his name to the list of speed merchants who will compete in the opening race on the new Culver City speed bowl. Thanksgiving Day. The smiling Italian has not been seen on any speedway during the past season and his appearance in the Culver City inaugural will mark his return to the boards after a sensational dirt track campaign. After a period of disqualification for racing in unsanctioned events, DePalma was reinstated by the contest board of the A.A.A., and since early last summer he has scored victory after victory on dirt tracks under A.A.A. sanction. He is now anxious to return to the fast board courses and to the great brick course at Indianapo-list, where the annual 500-mile race is staged. If you do, you'll get maximum service at least expense and won't have occasion to knock your car. This proposition put up to different dealers here this week met pretty general assent. One manager already had pointed out that a certain good make of car, if kept down to 40 miles an hour, would render fine service and could be maintained at half the expense often incurred. The more expensive cars generally can be driven faster for a longer time than the less expensive dealers were reminded. Again, one good cheap car is excellent except when driven too fast, driven long stretches on upgrades, etc. Every car, it appeared to be agreed, possessed some rather marked advantages and other disadvantages. On the other hand it was agreed that some cars were good for more purposes or under more widely varying conditions than others. The dealer in one of the popular cars demurred to some of the conclusions, declaring that 10 or 15 makes of car were popular, because of the service they gave to large numbers of people. Another line of thought, on the question of what constituted a good car, brought out further interesting discussion. Economy, performance, power, comfort, durability or durability, beauty and perhaps accessibility were among the features of quality emphasized; altho it was admitted that durability somewhat overlapped, as well as comfort and economy. Dustless sweeping and open windows are the real, honest-goodness disinfectants. There's this about a bootlegger: You're often on intimate terms with the "best families." Casing Tire of Future Trend Shows Enter the six-ply low pressure tire in all sizes above the 3½ inch. Exit the full balloon, with the balloon type tire taking its place. These are the somewhat startling predictions today of an experienced Anaheimer in the trade, who bases his forecast on existing factory developments. The Goodyear people, for example, are advocating six plies in all sizes above 3½ inch. Fred James handles them. Prices now are likely to go up in sympathy with prices generally. Following the national elections, in the same man's opinion. Nevertheless the inertia of heavy stocks of casings on hand isn't going to be done away with right away. The Ford Motor Co. for some weeks ran on but one shift instead of three, and other car manufacturers also curtailed operations, and the effect still exists. Smaller quantities of tires on a scale were purchased and the rubber factories weren't ready to cut so soon. Tires can't go any lower, unless there is further cheapening of materials and manufacture. It is said. Another experienced man in the local trade predicted that tires would advance, but declined to set any approximate date. Chevrolet Co. Holds Birthday The Chevrolet Motor Co. this last week celebrated its thirteenth anniversary. The company was founded on Nov. 3, 1911. From that date to Nov. 3, this year, the company has produced nearly a million and three-quarter of vehicles, with one exception, the greatest production record in the motor car industry in this period. To be exact, there have been produced 1,744,870 Chevrolet motor cars and light delivery trucks. It is in the last three years, however, that Chevrolet has had cuch phenomenal growth. More than 1,000,000 Chevrolet been produced since Jan. 1922, to November 3, 1922. MILL CREEK RACE IS IN GOOD SIGHT The Mill Creek road to Harvey's control Santa Ana river and from Clark's grade per control are in good accordance with information this week by the A.C.S.C. crews are putting in stock. In the first nine months of this year exports amounted to only $4,000,000 less than for the entire year 1923. The figures for the nine months this year and 12 last were respectively $166,667,971 and $170,-000,000. The show closes tomorrow evening. From almost any angle considered, the show is a remarkable setting forth of cars, accessories, safety methods, etc. Men of national prominence in the trade have declared it the best exposition in the west. The Sunday afternoon performance will start at 2 o'clock. Four 10-piece orchestras dispense music in the four big tents, and there is every convenience to accommodate the crowd, including a quick lunch counter where delicious food is served. Anaheimers and others will be particularly interested in the thirty or more headlight appliances, stop signal and spotlight improvements. Most of the present headlights become illegal on Jan. I. Captain W. P. Cannon of the Los Angeles County motor patrol is in charge and an engineer expert in illumination lectures each afternoon and evening. The anti-accident booth of the public safety department of the Los Angeles police force and the exhibit of the State Division of Motor Vehicles also are of interest. MILL CREEK ROAD IS IN GOOD SHAPE The Mill Creek road to Big Bear from Harvey's control station to Santa Ana river and from the latter over Clark's grade to the upper control are in good condition, according to information obtained this week by the A. C. S. C. Road creeks are putting in storm drains. Three and one tenth miles of new paving has been made from just east of Vista Del Mar to Camp Eureka. Than 1,000,000 Chevrolets have been produced since January 1, 1922, to November 3, 1924—a 4 months' period. HIGHLY SELECTIVE The new Kodel receiver is so selective that it will tune thru the most powerful station, says K. V. Jeesen, local distributor, and bring in distant programs on wave lengths only a few meters different. The Kodel circuit with a minimum number of parts accomplishes this with the turn of only a single dial. Designed for operation without an aerial, the Kodel circuit is so extremely sensitive that stations a thousand miles or more away are often heard on one tube using ground connections only. Two tubes give loud speaker volume, and coast to coast range with an outside aerial and favorable conditions. Being non-reradiating, the Kodel circuit will not interfere with the pleasure of neighboring set owners. And because of its simplicity, even a child can "tune in" successfully. In no other line of radio receiving sets at any price, are the much sought qualities of volume, range and selectivity so efficiently combined with simplicity of control and minimum number of tubes required, as in the Kodel quality line, due to the use of this exclusive new circuit. PUNCH AND PEP IN NEW GASOLINE The special offer of Sperber's service station of free oil in connection with purchase of motor power gasoline is interesting many Anaheimers. This gasoline contains ingredients that not only put a wonderful amount of pep into a machine, but clean out the carbon, leaving the car fitter for use for months afterwards. Actual tests were made in Long Beach, both on grades and in the laboratory, to prove that cars using it can do all that is claimed for them. Sperber has been doing a rushing business of late. at $14,600,000 Says State Board Compilation of the return for the third quarter on the gasoline tax of two cents a gallon show that $3,974,150.62 was received, the largest amount of any quarter yet. This brings the total for the three quarters to $10,872,927.59. The question or the revenue produced by the tax is distinctly to the fore now with some sentiment for a 3-cent gas tax. The total for the year, estimating the returns of the fourth and final quarter at the same sum as the second quarter, would be $14,600,000. The final figures of the third quarter were made public late yesterday by the State Board of Equalization at Sacramento. The grand total mentioned, however, doesn't represent the amount really paid by motorists; it is averred, because it is alleged there is evasion of the tax practiced by unscrupulous peddlers. The foot and mouth disease also is said to have cut seriously into the revenue. AHEAD TO RIGHT ABEAD TO RIGHT Despite the fact that there are stringent laws against the practice, there are some automobiles drivers who still persist in passing street cars on the left when they are in a hurry. This has resulted in disaster so frequently that it has come to be known as "suicide turn," a name which intimates the consequences. Another street car may be coming in the opposite direction, or the driver may be confronted with another automobile coming in the opposite direction. Then there is always the innocent pedestrian, who, proceeding across the street on the other side of the street car, is unaware of the auto coming around the back of the car. The Auto Club of So.
