SCHOOL HOLIDAYS COME NEXT WEEK Both Aristice Day, Nov 11, and Teachers' Visiting Day, Nov. 14—the latter is circus day too—will be holidays in the elementary schools, superintendent C. C. Smith announces, following a meeting of the board. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, and the Friday following will also be holidays. The Christmas-New Year's holidays will start Tuesday, Dec. 16. The next three days will witness the usual teachers' institute, to be held in Los Angeles, which all teachers are required by law to attend. School sessions will be resumed on Jan. 5. Election day was not a legal holiday for the schools. There are five such holidays—Decoration or Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and Independence Day, July 4. The schools are not in session in July. California school boards may declare holidays when they see fit, but schools must be in session at least 150 days. Principal Joseph A. Clayes of the High School, said the holidays had not been absolutely fixed yet, but the Christmas-New Year's holidays would probably begin Dec. 22 and end Jan. 2. If the teachers' institute for high school teachers is held on three evenings there will be no holidays on their account. West Coast Lease WEST COAST. The house was appropriately decorated in Hallowen colors of yellow and black. Games proved to be the entertainment for the evening and Miss Mildred Morgan a professional dancer, gave several solo dances which her audience enjoyed very much. Miss Studebaker received many beautiful gifts. Delicious refreshments were served toward the end of the evening which consisted of ice cream and cake. Los Angeles St Phone 354 PRESIDENT NOW IN OWN RIGHT WASHINGTON, Nov. 6—In the wake of an election which has brought about a new alignment in the reigning Republican party, and put Calvin Coolidge in the White House for four years by overwhelming popular mandate, there followed today a train of discussion not alone among the president's friends but among his opponents as well as to the course of action that will mark his policies in the more or less months ahead. Policies so far as Mr. Coolidge is concerned, can now be put on the shelf for a long time He need make no appointments to office nor take any executive action, as presidents sometimes must, with an eye to the effect it will have on his party's political fortunes. He is now president in his own right and president no longer by the hand of a whimsical fate that removed his predecessor from office In a similar situation, in 1904 Theodore Roosevelt is said to have remarked to Mrs Roosevelt, "Madam, your husband is no longer a political accident." And to some friends, he is reported to have said, "Now watch me." There followed some sanguinary battles between T.R. and the senate old guard. Extreme rectitude has thus far marked Mr. Coolidge's demeanor toward congress He has during his year and a half, attempted no "big stick methods." One reason perhaps was that Republican control of congress was only on paper He "pushed" the Mellon plan, he vetoed the bonus and the postal pay increase bill but in so doing he didn't fight congress in the sense that Roosevelt did.
