RESISTANCE TO UPWARD CLIMB
NEW YORK. Nov. 6.—The stock market encountered more resistance in the forward movement of prices today. The higher levels established by many of the active market leaders invited profit taking on a large scale, while renewal of short selling was also undertaken in some sections of the speculative list. Commission houses reported heavy demand for stocks from important speculative centers thrust out the country, more than counteracting the effect of professional short selling and profit taking.
Before this selling appeared, however, stocks were leading another brisk advance in price to the highest levels for the movement and with the best records made by the low priced rails in which dividend action is expected. St. Louis and San Francisco was the leader in this group, its advance to 40 setting a new high record for all time in that stock. The Wabash, St. Paul and Missouri Pac. stocks were also in good form.
American Can was the best stronghold of the bulls, holding its ground above 140, while U. S. Steel, Castiron Pipe and other industrial stocks sold down fractionally from the opening. Rumors today placed Amn. Can for a stock dividend and the splitting up of the stock on a 4 to 1 basis, with a dividend of $3 a share on the new stock. Encouragement was given to this view by the action of Amn. Radiator directors, in declaring a fifty per cent stock dividend.
Washington dispatches to the effect that Pres. Coolidge will renew his efforts for a larger reduction in income and corporation taxes in the next session of congress were very gratifying to the financial district and helped to resist the upward climb.
SEND NAMES OF CABINET TO KING
LONDON, Nov. 6.—Premier-Designate Stanley Baldwin completed the formation of his Tory cabinet this evening and sent the names to King George for approval.
Earlier in the day there had been reports that Baldwin was meeting with obstacles over the surplus of candidates for some of the ministerial posts.
Baldwin's chief difficulty was a surplus of material and the possibility of factional disputes over appointments. A strong section of the Tory party wanted Lord Curzon for foreign secretary but it is understood he offered the post to Austen Chamberlain who accepted.
Baldwin was expected to announce the cabinet personnel tonight.
Following is the official list of the new cabinet:
Chancellor of the exchequer—Winston Churchill.
Foreign secretary — Austen Chamberlain.
Lord Chancellor — Viscount Cave.
First lord of the admiralty—Right Hon. W. C. Dridgman.
Home Secretary—Sir Wm. Joyneson—Hicks.
Secretary for war—Sir Leming Worthington Evans.
Secretary for India—Lord Birkenhead.
Secretary of the colonies—Lieut. Col. Amery.
President of the council—Lord Curzon.
Attorney General—Sir Douglas M. Hogg.
Air minister—Sir Samuel Hoare.
Labor minister—Sir A. Steel-Maitland.
Agriculture—E. F. L. Wood.
Minister of public health—Ne-
today placed Ann. Can for a stock dividend and the splitting up of the stock on a 4 to 1 basis, with a dividend of $2 a share on the new stock. Encouragement was given to this view by the action of Ann. Radiator directors, in declaring a fifty per cent stock dividend.
Washington dispatches to the effect that Pres. Coolidge will renew his efforts for a larger reduction in income and corporation taxes in the next session of congress were very gratifying to the financial district and helped to stimulate interest in industrial stocks.
Irregularity in price movements was first seen today in the motor stocks, followed by the independent steels. Price cutting in popular cars, initiated today by Willys-Overland, which reduced prices of sedans $110 was the reason for heavy selling of motor stocks. Chandler lost 3 1/2 points at 28 and made a new for 1924 Willys-Overland pfd. lost one point to 64 3/8; Studebaker was down 1 point.
Declines of a point or more also made by American sugar. Woolen and other popular industrial stocks which had been carried along by the enthusiastic burst of speculative buying yesterday, but found no prospective purchasers at the higher price levels. Industrial stocks received little attention, notwithstanding that two of the largest buyers of crude products increases in their purchasing price today, while country wide production showed another heavy decline.
Stock sales today totalled 1,652,300 shares; bonds $15,837,-900.
