CONTROLSLS HOUSE ON PAPER NEW YORK, Nov. 5—The house of representatives for the 69th Congress, elected yesterday to come into being March 4 will be nominally Republican, cording to official and unofficial incomplete returns received day. Gains over the present house Republicans plurality of 18 was made by the Republicans in many of the eastern and midwest states. Results from the coast and the Rocky Mountain states are in doubt. It is still impossible to determine whether any regular publican organization will have actual political control of the house. The LaFollette forces appear to have held fast to their changeable "16" of the pressehouse, and to have added a few recruits from among the Republicans and Democrats whom they endorsed for the new house. It seems assured the regular Republicans will be permitted to organize the house machine and elect its officers and committee majorities. The LaFollette forces in the new house do not appear to be strong enough force their own selections up the Democrats and a trade with the Democrats by which the latter could organize the house would result in loss of influence committee assignments now held by LaFollette leaders who were elected. In legislation the LaFollette leaders appear to remain dominant positions by combination with the Democrats and house groups they may be able to force compromises on any Follette legislation to buck pledge of regular legislation recommended or endorsed by Pr COOLIDGE GIVEN SAN DIEGO LEAD SAN DIEGO, Nov. 5.—With 181 out of 274 precincts in the county and city having reported, President Coolidge has apparently carried San Diego-co by a safe margin. The vote: Coolidge, 14,997; LaFollette, 11,646; Davis, 1976; Prohibition candidate, 185. Indications based upon the same returns were that San Diego joined with other California counties and repudiate the water and power act, but approved the amendment on "12-round boxing and wrestling." WOMAN ELECTED CHEYENNE, Wyo., Nov. 5.—Tired but happy over the favorable trend of the slow returns from all sections of Wyoming. Mrs. Nellie Taylor Ross Democratic candidate to fill the position of chief executive of the state, left vacant by the recent death of her governor-husband, went to bed early this morning confident that she would be victor in the close gubernatorial race. With 300 precincts reporting out of 685 in the state, Mrs. Ross was leading her Republican opponent, Eugene Sullivan, by 1770 votes. Handled by all first class dealers. White Crow Cigars, 2 for 15c. BROWN The Sick Man of Europe had nothing on the boxing game in America as far as being ill is concerned. A glance over the prospects of the coming months leads one to believe that only a blood transfusion can save it. Here is the outlook. Jack Dempsey indicated that he does not intend to fight for many months when he underwent a beauty operation to improve his nose at the expense of his cauliflower ear. He may get into the ring next Independence Day—if the purse offered is large enough to insure him extra pin money to have the nose trued up again, should Harry Wills or Jack Renault or some other husky operate on it without a license. Harry Greb will continue to pick up more easy money on the strength of his middleweight title but as long as he continues to be champ and the division in general as ragged as it is little can be looked forward to in that division. Mickey Walker, welterweight able opponent since he won the much tossed about headpiece. Pete Herman and Jose Lynch, with their wield performances and juggling of the crown, dragged the tarnished derby into despair and Goldstein has made little effort to shine it up. He has licked two men since acquiring the title. March 21—Charlie Ledoux and Tommy Ryan. Pancho Villa, king of the flyweights and one of the greatest little fighters of the time, will have to be content with the smaller purses offered by promoters outside New York until his little argument with the New York boxing bosses is ended. So figure out, if you can, when one or two of these champions will swing into action. There only one thing sure regarding the appearance of any of these birds. That is that of John Pan will be asked to kick in anywhere from five to fifty bucks to get a look at the chins ware when it is displayed. And things are reaching a point where the fan strains his eyes SMITH WINNER BY 110,000 MAJORITY ALBANY, N. Y., Nov. 5.—Govorner Alfred E. Smith has been elected chief executive of New York state over Colonel Theodore Goosevelt by 110,000, according to unofficial returns compiled today. The governor is believed to be the only candidate on the Democratic state ticket to overcome the Coolidge landslide. SAFE MARGIN FOR PRES. IN ARIZONA PHCENIX, Ariz., Nov. 5.—President Coolidge has a safe margin in vote in all sections of Arizona in incomplete returns slowly sifting in today. It was estimated he could carry the state by 3000. DWIGHT HEARD (R) is leading Gov. Hunt, candidate for re-election on Democratic ticket by 52 votes in a tight battle. DANCING CINDERELLA HALL Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Nights boxes of Candy given away this Wednesday Eve. The featherweight division has no head—no king on which to shower glory, large purses and pleadings to fight. Johnny Dundee up and left the division flat when he retired undefeated a few months ago. Johnny was a legitimate champ. But the two battles that were responsible for his rise to the throne after 12 years of waiting, eliminated the only men capable of giving him a real battle—Johnny Kilbane and Eugene Criqui. You will recall brought Kilbane's long and hectic reign to an end and 60 days later Dundee soaked the little soldier of France into oblivion. Abbe Goldstein, bantamweight champion, insists he will not endure any punishments offered by promoters outside New York until his little argument with the New York boxing bosses is ended. So figure out, if you can, when one or two of these champions will swing into action. There only one thing sure regarding the appearance of any of these birds. That is that of John Pan will be asked to kick in anywhere from five to fifty bucks to get a look at the chins ware when it is displayed. And things are reaching a point where the fan strains his eyes trying to see five dollars worth of fighting in even a championship bout. Bill Tilden, exart of the tennis world, is really going into the movies. Contracts are signed a everything. The most interesting angle to his venture in the film is the fact that in none of the four pictures arranged for him will he appear in tennis foes or wield a racket. If it was at Tilden's request that teddies was omitted in the plots it is a wise move on his part. Movie goers—at least the male element—know that all of Jack Dempsey's fighting in his pictures is hippodrome stuff. The mean looking villains that appeal to give him such a terrific battle would last about 30 seconds in a real bout. Tilden need not depend upon his tennis playing before the camera. He has had some stage experience with amateur stock companies. He is to spend two months this winter touring for Stuart Walker in a production of Booth Tarkington's Clarence, in which he will have the lead. Percy Haughton's untimely death following Columbia's district triumph over Williams makes that game and details connected with it of more than usual interest. Few persons probably are aware that Haughton and his men were battling his own "system" when Columbia and Williams met. Percy Wendell manages the latter college and he has instilled into his team the intricacies of the method. Wendell played halfback for Harvard while Haughton conceived the Crimson. Wendell's team defeated Gil Dobie's Cornell eleven before taking an Columbia—which may be claimed as another triumph indirectly for Houghton.
