CONNOT FIND BIG RADICAL SLUSH FUND
(Continued from Page One)
WASHINGTON, Oct. 31—Search by the senate campaign fund committee today for "enormous sums" alleged to have been spent by the American Federation of Labor in behalf of the presidential candidacy of Senator Robert M. La Follette brought to light only $23,736 most of which was used in mailing out La Follette literature to members of the Federation. The extent of organized labor's efforts to elect the independent ticket was outlined to the committee by Frank Morrison, secretary of the Federation, who was called as a witness by Wm. L. Bourland, attorney for the Republican National Committee.
PLAN TO ADJOURN
WASHINGTON, Oct. 31.—The pre-election probe of campaign expenditure moved to close today in Washington and Chicago. By agreement of all parties concerned, the inquiry is to be adjourned this evening until after the election.
The first witness this morning was Joseph R. Grundy, Philadelphia manufacturer, who has already reported the collection of $24,000 in eastern Pennsylvania for the Republican campaign.
Grundy was recalled at the insistence of Attorney Walsh for cross-examination.
Grundy revealed that Republican collection in Pennsylvania now aggregate nearly $800,000, although the state's quota was originally placed at only $600,000.
Grundy said the collections in Pennsylvania outside of Pittsburgh up to Oct. 29, totaled $521,948. Previous testimony had put the Pittsburg fund at more than $270,.000, thereby putting the state's total collections into he $800,000 class.
MOTHER SUICIDE
SAN MARCOS, TEX., Oct. 31—Mrs. Anna Hauptbrief, under indictment for the murder of four step-children and the poisoning of her husband, committed suicide in her cell here today by hanging. She was to have been tried in February.
DEMOCRATS MAKE SUPREME EFFORT
NEW YORK, Oct. 31—Bruising aside and disregarding all the straw vote, polls and other election pointers which so strongly indicated the election no Tuesday of Calvin Coolidge, the Democrats are making a tremendous eleventh hour effort for the electoral vote of New Jersey and New York.
Give the 59 electoral votes that lie on either side of the Hudson river here, say the Democrats leaders directing this last minute concentration and they are willing to take their chances in the electoral college. That explains the seeming abandonment of the west by the Democrats in the last week of this unusual complication.
The Democrats are making unanticipated progress in this final concentration.
Whether they are making enough progress to overcome the admitted Republican lead in the two states, only Nov. 4 can reveal.
The Republicans poo poo the idea and point derisively to every poll, every straw vote contest and every other barometer that indicates Coolidge is running about 2 to 1 in this territory.
But the Democrats are grim.

NOCRATS MAKE PREPREME EFFORT
NEW YORK, Oct. 31.—Brushade and disregarding all the vote, polls and other pointers which so strengthened the election next day of Calvin Coolidge, theocrats are making a tremendous hour effort for the final vote of New Jersey and York.
The 59 electoral votes that neither side of the Hudson here, say the Democrat is directing this last minuteiration and they are will take their chances in the real college. That explains abandonment of the by the Democrats in the last of this unusual, complex sign. Democrats are making progress in this finaliration. Neither are making progress to overcome the dead Republican lead in these states, only Nov. 4 can re-republicans poo poo the end point derisively to every straw vote contest and another barometer that indi-Coolidge is running about in this territory. The Democrats are grimly carrying on and their progress is indicated by the surprising about-face executed by the central trades and labor council in the last 24 hours.
Last September this council endorsed Senator LaFollette, along with the greater part of all organized labor, at the behest of the American Federation of Labor. Today this same council has backtracked on its endorsement of the Wisconsin senator and is now out with a manifesto appealing to its enormous membership to vote for John W. Davis.
"We now realize," says this remarkable document, "that Mr. LaFollette has no chance of being elected and that a vote for him anywhere in the east is a vote for the enemies of Labor—Coolidge and Daewen."
"No clear thinking man or woman can compare Davis and Coolidge and their records without coming to the conclusion that in every way Davis is the better candidate. We hereby endorse John W. Davis and recommend to our entire membership and to all interested in the cause of labor to vote and work for the election of Davis."
The central trades council of Greater New York is the greatest single unit in the American Federation of Labor. It comprises some 700,000 members, constituting more than one-fifth of the entire membership of the federation.
Naturally the Democrats were jubilant today. Here in one big thrust, they say, they have increased the Davis vote in New York state by "hundreds of thousands."
Whether this is true or not can only be revealed, of course, on Nov. 4. The LaFollette managers, somewhat taken aback and not a little resentful, declared today this last minute switch will have little or no effect next Tuesday. This action, they pointed out, was taken by a group of a dozen leaders. And the labor vote, they said, is so solidily entrenched behind LaFollette that it cannot be coaxed out or blown out by the manifesto of any such group of leaders.
Irrespective of this controversy over the result of labor's last minute switch in New York, the whole matter is indicative of the intensity of the drive that the Democrats are making for these 45 votes of the Empire state.
One of the Democratic generals in this final offensive here is Senator Key Pittman, of Nevada. He knows his west, and irrespective of straw votes, and barometric polls, he said today that Davis will carry at least five states west of the Mississippi, exclusive of the border states of Missouri and Oklahoma. The five include his own, Nevada, Kansas, Nebraska, Arizona and New Mexico.
Coming eastward had claimed Indiana, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Delaware and New Hampshire. These, combined with the solid south and the border states, will bring Davis to within six votes of a majority in the electoral colligue.
"And we have an equal chance of carrying New York, Illinois and Ohio," he said, New York, being the largest, the Democrats are shooting at New York.
"And mind you," said the Nevada senator, "I am not here taking into account LaFollette. If LaFollette carries four states, then Calvin Coolidge cannot be elected."
Few campaigns have ever witnessed such a last minute concentration of talent in one small area as is taking place in New York this closing week.
Davis himself chose to spend all week here and tomorrow night will make his supreme and closing argument at Carnegie hall. For the Coolidge forces, Sec'y of State Hughes has been put on the stump here. He and Sec'y of Navy Wilbur will represent the administration in tomorrow night's final.

DAVIS APPEALS
TO RADICAL VOTE
NEW YORK, Oct. 31.—In the breath with which John W. Davis announced that Republicans are coming over in flocks, theidential nominee appealed to the persons who intend to vote Sen. LaFollette to get behind Davis-Bryan ticket.
I call to their attention," he of the Progressives in the midst of a series of daily pre-tion statements," "the hopelessness of their fight." I remind them that they are subtracting in the great force opposed to Coolidge administration."
To those LaFollette supporters prefer revolution to remedy, he said he had nothing to do.
The great majority, however," nominee added, "who are unitedly sincere were led to believe that the surest way to defeat Judge was to vote for LaFollette."
In his statement Davis also:
The nation is threatened today by re-action and privation than by radicalism. Radium will, indeed, grow in proportion to the blind greed for money and the improper use of power of money.
Our prosperity is indeed deteriorated, not because the Republican tenure of office is menial, but by the undermining of evidence for which Coolidge administration is responsible.
There can be no healthy pro-ty without confidence, because evidence is the foundation of periority.
This administration which is a continuance of power has only undermined the conflice of the people in their government, but as the passing of divids, the reduction of wages and the increase of unemployment show, the prosperity of the country has already begun to diminish."
BRAND ACTION AS "ILLEGAL"
NEW YORK, Oct. 31—Two prominent labor officials connected with the central trades and labor council of New York today branded as "illegal and unwarranted," the action of 11 of the councils of 23 executive members in announcing that the councils had urged 700,000 workers here to vote for Joohn W. Davis instead of Senator Robert M. LaFollette.
The labor officials who repudiated the action of the 11 executives were:
Abraham Lefkowitz, chairman of the central trades educational committee and head of the teachers' union of New York City, and Wm. Kohn, head of the upholderers union. Both are members of the executive committee.
FACTION OF KLAN FILES IN NEVADA
SACRAMENTO, Oct. 31—Climaxing the fight that has been raging between the two factions of the Ku Klux Klan in California incorporation papers of the invisible empire, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of the state of Nevada, were received here by Sec'y. of State Frank C. Jordan for record.
Jordan recently declined to issue incorporation papers to either faction of the warring California Klan and the case is now pending in the courts.
The dissenting faction of the California Klan, headed by Chas. H. Hays, James F. DeBord and F. M. Lapley, of Venice, Calif., secured incorporation papers for their faction of the order at Carson City, Nev. De Bord was named as the grand kleagle.

administration; there was collected $212,597.60 Of that, over $1700 was collected by Judge Chas. Kuchel in two and one-half months. When it was apparent that Kuchel believed in enforcing the law and would hand out reasonable fines to bootleggers, former Mayor Wm. Stark demanded his resignation, accompanying it with the assertion: "Tm the boss. I'll show you who is running this town."
Stark, who was snowed under last spring by the greatest avalanche of votes ever piled up against a former mayor is now attempting, thrue U. S. A. club, to force upon Anaheim the stigma and expense of a recall election.
That the efficiency of the police department was never better is indicated by the report of the police court for the month ending today. In October Judge Kuchel has assessed $4032 fines, which, with exception of 1922 is more than collected in any previous year under the former administration.
It is all "clean" money, too, explained city officials today. That is, faced with the evidences offenders have entered pleas of guilty and paid fines. In the six months, there has been but one request for a jury trial in Judge Kuchel's court, a remarkable record for the efficiency of the police department.
In that one instance, the jury returned a verdict of guilty and a fine of $300 was assessed.
"We are simply enforcing the law, without fear or favor, and will continue to do so backed by the present council, stated Judge Kuchel today."
