DEMANDS MELLON BE SUBPOENAED
WEEHAWKEN, N. J., Oct. 27.
—A demand that Secy of the Treasury Mellon and David H. Blair, commissioner of internal revenue, be summoned immediately before the senate committee investigating the internal revenue department to explain by what authority they issue a warning threatening newspapers with fine and imprisonment if they publish lists of taxpayers and income taxes paid by them." was made here today by Sen. Robert M. La Follette.
To prevent newspaper publication of income taxes of individuals or corporation would "subject the will of congress" La Follette charged.
The independent presidential candidate arrived here today from Syracuse. Late in the day he was scheduled to go to Akron, Md., to rest over the week-end before continuing his campaign in Baltimore Monday night.
In a telegram to Sen. Consins, Rep. of Mich., chairman of committee, La Follette said that congress in passing the publicity amendment to the last revenue bill, intended that "the public should know who is paying taxes and how much they pay."
The purpose of this was to provide a means of checking up on tax dodgers by exposing the facts to public scrutiny," said La Follette.
This purpose will be defeated if newspaper publication is prevented."
"I urge you to call Secy. Mellon and Commissioner Blair immediately before your committee and ask them by what authority they seek to subvert the will of congress," he added.
"Secy. Mellon is quoted as saying that congress did not intend to permit newspaper publication to 'satisfy idle curiosity.' Mellon may regard it as idle curiosity for the public to desire to know who BUENA PARK, Oct. 27. (Spl.) Mr. Robert Schofield died Friday morning at the home of his son, J. R. This purpose will be defeated if newspaper publication is prevented."
"I urge you to call Secy. Mellon and Commissioner Blair immediately before your committee and ask them by what authority they seek to subvert the will of congress," he added.
"Secy. Mellon is quoted as saying that congress did not intend to permit newspaper publication to satisfy idle curiosity." Mellon may regard it as idle curiosity for the public to desire to know who is paying taxes and who is dodging them, but congress did not so regard it when it passed this amendment at the end of a fight extending over ten years.
"This is another example of the arrogance of Mellon in setting himself up as a judge over congress similar in purpose to his action in attempting to block the investigation by the senate of his own department," said La Follette.
In a speech filled with denunciation charges against both old parties, La Follette, in Syracuse last night, declared the "Democratic party is dead for this election, at least, and that the contest for the presidency now lies squarely between the Progressive ticket and the Republican ticket."
