WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
By Ellwod J. Munger
The two outstanding features of the Athens-Rosecrane field this week is the return of production of the General Petroleum's Vaughn well and the drilling out of the cement in the Dabney deep test well. The General Petroleum's Vaughn was put on production two weeks ago at a depth of 4752 but developed water quickly after coming and was immediately plugged back to 4720 feet. The well is back at 800 barrels, 35 gravity with no signs of water. The hope of the northwest area of the Athens field resists upon the outcome of Joseph Dabney's at 120th-st. A string of pipe was set at 6204 and it is understood that the showings were favorable. The cement will be drilled out and a test today and if the well shows the browngold a lot of new development will start in the northwest area. In the meantime the Sentinel Oil Co. is waiting at 5180 and C. C. Julian at 4700 on the outcome of the Dabney well.
In the central west section of the Rosecrane field some concern is being expressed as to the outlook. The General Petroleum's Amstoy 1 is close to 5800 and has not found the sand. The Union Oil Co.'s Trust No. 1 has passed the 5300 mark and is not showing anything particular.
The Dominguez field boosted its production last week to the 33,000 mark and by so doing has set a new mark for output. The Shell Co. assisted with the output by putting Reyes No. 6 on a 400 barrel well. Dominguez' outpost wildest well the Birch Oil Co.'s Humphries No. 1 has passed the 5100 foot mark without finding the 3888. This is the biggest well the field has experienced in two years and goes to show that there is some oil left yet in the middle zone. It will be remembered that when the Meyer zone was discovered operators all hastened down and the upper zones of the field remained in tact. Santa Jo Springs production was boosted to 55,000 daily.
The Petroleum Midway put on production a nice little well in the Montebello field. Mulholland No. 1 a redrill put on at 2650 is making 180 barrels of 21 gravity oil. The attention of Montabello development is centered on the Standard Oil Co.'s western extension well, Howard Smith No. 2. At 3550 a 150 barrel producer was obtained and now the Standard has decided to go on down and explore for a deep sand.
At North Whittier Heights the Superior Oil Co. is attracting a little more than passing interest in a well some 3400 feet deep. Evidences of oil in the gump hole, and pumping and balling test even lead to the belief that W. M. Keck is about to or has already opened up a new oil field for Southern California. Extreme secrecy surrounds every move made on the well and the offices of the Superior Oil Company steadfastly refuse to give out any information on the well. W. M. Keck has done much toward the wildest development work of the Los Angeles basin and if any one is entitled to a new oil field he is.
From San Francisco comes word of a new invention called the waffle dog, a combination of waffle and weiner—a sort of hot dog with a college education.

The General Petroleum's Amstoy 1 is close to 5600 and has not found the sand.
Dominguez outpost wildest well the Birch Oil Co.'s Humphries No. 1 has passed the 5100 foot mark without finding the pay-sand and the outlook is beginning to look a little doubtful.
In the east section of the Dominguer field the Marland Oil Co. is making spendid progress drilling three wells under the direction and supervision of the Bell-Little Drilling Co. The United-Headeron has started another well, its No. 1 at 1600 bbls, being a most consistent producer. The Dominguez field seems to have a future ahead of it.
With the Chanslor-Canfield Midway Oil Co. in the Redondo or west section of the Torrance field drilling at 5510, and the Shell Co. of California down close to 5000 feet in the Lomita or central east section of the Torrance field the outlook for a deep sand does not appear very promising. It is understood that neither of these test wells has had anything that even looked like showings.
The extreme east end of the Torrance field is not coming up very strong on production. The Petroleum Securities Co. has completed a number of wells on the Kleinfmeyer property that do not go much over the 200 mark on production, in fact many of them do not make over 100 barrels.
New work at Torrance this week included the rig erected by the General Petroleum Corp., on the Poggi property an offset to the Consolidated Mutual's Campbell No. 1. In addition to the new well on the Poggi the General Petroleum has staked locations for seven other wells on the same property.
The Shell Co. contributed about 1000 bbls of new production to the Long Beach field this week with the completion of three wells. One well famous in the early development of Signal Hill Horse No. 1 was redlined and deepened to 4920 feet and came back at 400 barrels. Horse 1 was one of the wells that moved development work westward three years ago. The well, however, did not come up to expectations when put down to the deep sand. The action of the Horse well would make it appear that the deep sand zone is pretty well drained. Other wells completed by the Shell were Jones 6 at 5000 a 400 barrel well and Bixby 3 a 300 barrel producer at 4473. The Shell Co. now has a daily output on Signal Hill in look.

A second northwest extension test well will be attempted by the Shell Co. on the Virginia Golf club grounds. The new well will be known as Virginia No. 1 and the rig is up and rigging work started. A feature of the rig and equipment is the high board fence around it protecting the workmen from the flying golf balls. It seems that the national sport of cow pasture pool could not be interfered with.
Old Santa Fe Springs got something of a thrill yesterday when the Petroleum Midway put on production a 2500 barrel well. The big find was made on the Matter property, well 2-2 completed at
