That question today still persisted Ed McClelland, chief criminal deputy, and other deputies Sheriff Sam Jernigan has assigned to the task of ferreting out the circumstances surrounding the finding of Smith's virtually nude body on his bed, a bullet wound through the back of his head and a small pistol reposing in his hand. Doubt of medical authorities that suicide could have been committed and refusal of a Fullerton coroner's jury to five the cause of death has led to the investigation of the sheriff's office that was not completed today. Coroner Charles D. Brown, however, has stated his belief that Smith, probably during an orgy of drunkenness, placed the gun to his head and fired the fatal shot. Smith, so far as the deputies working on the case can learn, had no chemies, at least none of the persons with whom he was known to associate in the La Habra district was other than his friend. But persons who have been interrogated on the matter have not evinced sufficient knowledge of the affair to throw a great deal of light on the movements of the victim within the 24 hours preceding his death, the officers have admitted. The victim often had been under the influence of liquor, the officers have ascertained, they said, and the sources of the illicit product are said to be wanted in order that the investigation may lead into all channels before it is dropped. If such becomes necessary. No word had been received today from Smith's relatives, but Spanish War veterans in Santa SUES FOR $10,000 PROMISED TO HIM FOR KEEPING SOBER Michael Crowley (above), railroad employee, says that in 1908, the late Frank Jones, millionaire brewer of Portsmouth, N. H., agreed to pay him $10,000 if he would remain sober for 10 years. He fulfilled his part of the contract but was not paid, he avera. He is suing Jones' estate for the amount. One Kentucky man shot another who called him a common liar. Probably objected to being called common. A Class Ad is best little salesman. Broadway Cement Contractor PHONE 136W SCHOOL DEBATES LACK OF TERMINALS CAUSE OF LOSSES WASHINGTON, Oct. 22.—Producers and consumers of the U.S. suffer a tremendous annual loss because of inadequate railroad terminal facilities. Secretary of Commerce Hoover declared today Congestion in terminal centers is the biggest transportation problem of the day, according to Hoover, who added that railroad consolidations would go far to remove the trouble. Cooperative associations of California are acting with Secretary Hoover to bring about an improvement of terminal facilities. Hoover said that the California interests are the greatest sufferers from present conditions. An organization will be set up to make a campaign for better terms and facilities of Hoover's Terminals have not kept pace with the increased movement of perishable goods to the markets, he said. "Heavy loss is occasioned by inability of the producers to get their crops to market. An additional sales of 20,000 carload of California fruits might have been made in New York last year if the products could have been moved to the markets thus congested terminals." Hoover pointed out that the increased value of land has made it financially difficult for railroads to expand their terminals without the assistance of municipalities and private warehouse associations. "I am now making a strong effort to get the cooperation of all interests concerned to eradicate the terminal congestion." Hoover declared. "The California Cooperative Ass'n, being the largest shipper of perishables, is in an excellent position to represent the producer." I. Hoover's opinion, creation of adequate terminal facilities will mean that perishable goods, principally fruit and fresh vegetables, will reach the market with a minimum loss of time, bringing about a reduction of waste to producers and a cut in price to the consumer. AUTOIST MISSING Neither Los Angeles nor Orange-coast authorities have been able to locate H.H.Davenport of Long Beach, for whom a "John Doe warrant charging reckless driving has been issued in connection with the plunging of a Crown stag into a six-foot ditch near Westminster Friday, officers reported today. PREMATURELY BORN, INFANT SHOWS LIFE DENVER, Oct. 22.—The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Peraldott had a "good chance to live" today, according to physicians, after the child was declared dead following premature birth. The infant was taken to a mortuary where attendants heard it crying as preparations were being made for embalming. Despite heroic efforts of physicians, the baby died later from exposure.
