SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1924 STAGE ALL SET FOR WILL REVIVE AUTO TRADE ASS’N Crafts to Be Reorganized at Meeting Here Oct. 24 The auto trade in the county, which has been somewhat at sixes and sevenths in the absence of a single strong organization to knit it together, will welcome the rejuvenation of the Orange-co Auto Trade Ass’n, which Secretary-Manager J. B. Glaze proposes to effect at a meeting to be held on the evening of Oct. 24 at the Cadillac Garage Co.’s display room on So. Los Angeles-st. The meeting will open at 7:30 o’clock, and efforts will be made to organize six different crafts, comprising painters and top builders, batterymen, garagemen, car and truck dealers, accessories distributors and tire distributors. There will be a buffet lunch of hot dogs and coffee to break the ice. An excellent program of speakers has been arranged, including George Bellis, president, and J.E. October Worst Accident Month With the coming of the season when rains may be expected in this section, motorists are warned to use extra precautions to avert accidents. Statistics of life insurance companies indicate that October is the peak month of the year in traffic fatalities. This situation is accounted for by the fact that twilight hours come on earlier, children are back in school, and the motorists become more careless because they believe the heavy touring season of the summer is passed. An analysis of the September traffic casualties shows that some 50 per cent of the disasters were due to the fault of motorists, 39 per cent to the carelessness of pedestrians, and 11 per cent to faults in the highway or other conditions. Forces of Star Along Coast Rally OAKLAND, Oct. 18.—Mass meetings of dealers, salesmen and service men of the Star organization all over the Pacific Coast are being held to hear the outlining of new policies for sale, service, and advertising for the coming season during a trip of Star factory executive heads. Four meetings were held around the San Francisco bay district with saies and service representatives before leaving the factory. October 18. An excellent program of speakers has been arranged, including George Bellis, president, and J. E. Granger, secretary, of the So Calif. Auto Trade Ass'n; Wesley D Smith, president of the Los Angeles Auto Trade Ass'n; Joe Bushy, chairman of the committee of thirty of the Los Angeles Auto Trade Ass'n, and H. J. Banta, president of the H. J. Banta Co., of Los Angeles. Banta spoke here frequently during the days of the old Orangeco Branch, Calif. State Auto Trade Ass'n, and is always interesting and instructive. His fellow speakers are all men at the top of the trade. HI STUDENTS HEAR F. W. Lawton, engineer, and chief instructor of the Willys-Overland Co., Inc., addressed Annieim Hi students on Thursday and Fullerton Hi students yesterday on motors, etc. Lawton was the guest while here of Ray Schanhals, local distributor. Early cut is early cured and that is true of cancer. Along Coast Rally OAKLAND, Oct. 18.—Mass meetings of dealers, salesmen and service men of the Star organization all over the Pacific Coast are being held to hear the outlining of new policies for sale, service, and advertising for the coming season during a trip of Star factory executive heads. Four meetings were held around the San Francisco bay district with sales and service representatives before leaving the factory. October 12 for the first swing through the northwest territory. In the factory party are E. T. Tuller, sales manager, H. W. Curtis, assistant general manager, and James Houlihan, advertising counsel for the factory. Their itinerary has already included Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento and Stockton, Calif.; Roseburg, Salem, Portland, Ore.; and Tacoma Wash. Meetings are to be held yet in Seattle, Bellingham, Spokane and Yakima. Wash., before they return and start a second tour to cover southern California, and Arizona. The meetings held thus far have been attended with great enthusiasm. Dealers have been highly pleased with the reception of the new 1925 Star models, the slogan contest just completed, and the results of the coast-wide economy test which revealed startling economy figures from dealers and owners alike. VISIT THE Moon Car Exhibit At The Anaheim Auto Show OCTOBER 20th to 25th What full balloon tires make a heavy car was shown this when a Hudson sedan was out of James L. Dunn's show on West Center-st with its unfastened at the rear. In numerous bumpings, the never fell off. Herman Karsten with a son coach and Julius Schieh with a Hudson sedan are latest purchasers of the models. Dunn points out that not but full balloon tires now used on Hudson and Easex And these tires aren't just on the cars, but built into provision being made in the ing gear and elsewhere so the tires are part of the single portation unit. Casings Down Five Per Cent, Effective On Monday Another reduction, this time of more than 5 per cent, effective Oct. 20 on United States tires is announced by S. R. Walter of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, local distributors. The cut brings these tires to the lowest point in their history. Others of the "Big Five" are expected to follow suit at once. Walter, commenting on the decline, declared that he had been seeing the lower prices for some meats and had anticipated the cut. Failure of the leading manufacturers to get together and stabilize prices, the continuation of the independents' organization led by the Firestone people and seeking of the market on balloon tires, many weeks ago are causes given for the new reduccion. THE AUTO SHOW "HIRE a hall." "Get a megaphone." This advice, given as a premium every so often at street corner confabs, is being followed by local distributors of fine passenger cars in the Anaheim Auto Show, to be put on at Pythian Temple next week. Retailers, aroused to the fact that they can't just wait and have patrons come to them, have decided to go to patrons. They have also determined in so doing to combine their individual efforts, feeble alone, into a chorus which can be heard from one end of the country to the other. The economy of such publicity has been one of the compelling arguments in its favor. For 18 months there has been no show in the county except the auto show of the Orange County Fair last fall. The Fourth Annual Valencia Orange Show, with which an auto show is given, was omitted this year, and that was another body blow to the trade. Another good reason for the show is that numerous new models have appeared during the past few months which the average resident knows little or nothing about. These new models, seen in the parade or on the floor of the show, can be compared and judged on their merits. The show will open officially on Monday evening, although there will be a parade at noon to advertise it. All next week the show will be open each afternoon and evening, with entertainments at night, and no admission fee will be asked. Much more space could have been sold had it been available, but the floor of the Pythian Temple, while not as commodious as Manager Herb Davis would like, was the largest under-roof place available. Everybody in the city, whether connected with the auto trade or not, will benefit from this show and parade, and universal support should be given to the combined event. Compact yet ample, there is space for two per person to sit comfortably in the rear seat and two or three at a bench in the front seat. As the makers say, the roadster retains that individuality which stamps all the Chrysler models. It is as racy in appearance as it is in design. It suggests open roads, mountains, roaring-fed horses, and—somehow or other—the routine of cold business. The real and the practical are here portrayed in one creation. The roadster is painted in two-tone gray—a color that fits its ultra-rakish grace. Upholstery is dual tone Spanish leather. It is the same special equipment the phaeton with windshield arms added. And though a roadster in name, it can really seat people; for the sweeping kick opens up into a comfortable and convenient auxiliary seat. WOULD END GRADE CROSSINGS Orange County Interested in Election Proposition Being Sponsored Opportunity for the motorists and public of Los Angeles-co to eliminate the most dangerous of the existing grade crossings will be offered at the election Nov. 4. At this time, voters will be called upon to pass on a bond issue for $5,000,000 to provide the county with funds to do its share in abolishing grade intersections which are a continuous menace to human life, and which every year gathers a greater harvest of death. Orange-co, because of its proximity, is particularly interested in the reform. The first definite step toward making these death traps safe was taken by the board of supervisors recently when a resolution was passed, submitting the proposition to the voters. Safety organizations, communities, and the Auto Club of So. Calif. have been urging for years that something be done to prevent the ghastly toll of lives and injuries. Figures so far indicate that in 1924, there will be double the number of lives sacrificed and persons injured at grade crossings than there were in 1923. Up to May 31, in the United States, there were 789 persons killed, an 2330 injured, which is more than the entire number for 1923. It is understood that the railways are willing to proceed with abolishing grade crossings so soon as the county will bear its share there will be a parade at noon to advertise it. HODGKINSON MADE MANAGER OF N.A.C. Arnold Hodgkinson, manager of the board of fire underwriters of the Pacific, was recently appointed General Manager of the National Automobile Club. Hodgkinson's wide experience will be of inestimable value to the club, and he promises members that there will be no curtailment of services, but on the contrary extensions will be made wherever they are necessary for carrying out the club's policy, that of offering complete touring protection from the Oregon line to the Mexican border. Hodgkinson came to the Pacific Coast in 1907 when he acted as Secretary of the Washington Fire Insurance Company, which its home office, located at Seattle. Five years later he was appointed Secretary of the Valcan Fire Insurance Company of California. So great was his success in these two positions that he was offered the management of the Doe of Fire Underwriters of the Pacific, which position he held until his recent affiliation with the National Automobile Club. According to Hodgkinson the future for the National Automobile Club is unlimited, and the day is not far distant when its scope of work may become nation-wide. CANT GET SETS TO MEET ORDERS A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot reports that he has sold more Kennedy radio sets this month than he can deliver. He is entirely out of Model 15 and Model 5. Five or six orders remain to be filled, and Bevillard says he doesn't know where he'll get the machines. Another shipment is expected by next Saturday. SPECIAL TRAFFIC COMMITTEE NAMED is a result of the efficient work by the special committee in large traffic when the world is returned to Clover Field, planned to make this commute a permanent organization taking charge of traffic on all roads when extraordinary measures are necessary. The method of handling the traffic was under the direction of the Co Club of So. Calif., with Carl McStay of the club as chair. Chief traffic officers of Los Angeles city and county and Monica were enrolled as members of the committee and officers were used in addition to 1500 temporary directions. REGISTRATION NOW 1,224,608 VEHICLES passenger cars registered at amonto reached this week the famous total of 1,072,559, acting to an announcement of H Marsh, chief of the State Division of Motor Vehicles. Neumatic tired trucks alone bored 142,363; solid tired ks. 40,814; motorcycles, 11, trailers. 17,203; transfers, 123; Chauffeurs licenses 211. The total registration of all vehicles was 1,224,608 and receipts the department $6,553,286. When woodsheds were in vogue, ths of 16 were seldom bored existence.—Peoria Star, Harry D. Riley had delivered a used car per day up to yesterday during October, and according to Harry Twitchell, manager of the used car department, the month will compare well with others of the fall and late summer, in spite of the fact that the rebuilding of the main section of the garage has caused some confusion. Seven new Studebakers were delivered during the same period. Glowing reports are being made of the performance of the new cars by purchasers. The 1025s are more powerful by 10 horsepower than their predecessors, the standards being powered at 50 horsepower, the specs at 65 and the big sizes at 75. On Nov. 1 the big six sedan and the special six coupe will be in shipment from the factory. SNAPPY SERVICE OF JAMES PLEASES The snappy service car which James the Vulcanizer has added to his equipment is proving a big convenience especially to the ladies, who are often nonplused when they find a flat tire on their car in the garage. MOVE TO MAKE GAS TAX 4 CENTS In California's gas tax to be jumped to four cents a gallon? Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Trinity and Laassen counties favor the boost, and passed resolutions this week in favor of framing legislation to that effect at the coming session. The five counties would have the additional two cents made available for new construction work only. PATROL CAR THRU ORANGE CO. DAILY Drivers who expect to enjoy a breakdown on the highway between here and Los Angeles will be interested in the following information regarding the A. C. S. C. patrol car serving this territory. Grading of South Palm road for a quarter of a mile or more north of West Chapman makes travelable one of the worst pieces of road in northern Orange-co.
