STRONG MARKET FOR RAILROADS
NEW YORK, Oct. 18.—Under the stimulus of a strong market for railroad stocks, the whole market advanced moderately in the short session today. Motor and specialty stocks were pushed ahead by a strong buying movement of which a good part represented accumulation for the long account.
Railroad stocks continued to attract attention because of the general feeling that the heads of the large eastern railroad systems will work more vigorously on the amalgamation of a number of transportation lines into four large systems headed by the Nickle Plate, New York Central, Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio.
Moderate gains were made in New York Central, New Haven, Atchison, Missouri Pacific, Nickle Plate, Southern Railway and others.
American Waterworks, Canton Pipe and specialty stocks in this group made sharp advances in the early trading. American water works gained 4.4 points at 118 in further response to the action of the directors in reducing the par value to $20 and splitting the stock five for one. The fractional shares sold up to 24 on the curb market. Gen. Elec. at 249½ was up about four points.
Up about four points. Iron Products and Universal Pipe stocks showed the effects of the plan for consolidating the former into the latter. Iron Products at 50 was up 5 points and Universal Pipe pfd at 54½, up 7 points from Tuesdays law.
Motor and necessary stocks made further response to the improved prospects for the motor trade. Studebaker sold at 29½, up 1¼ from Friday's low and Stewart-Warner continued its "come back."
STAGE DITCHED TO AVOID CRASH
A large Crown stage safety bus was thrown on its side into a six-foot ditch near Westminster and its 11 passengers were hurled into the aisles late yesterday and today Long Beach authorities were searching for H. H. Davenport, 57 Linden-ave, that city, suspected of being the driver of a Cadillac touring car whom officers of Orange coaccuse of being responsible for the accident.
Mrs. Emma Reynolds of Long Beach was the most severely shaken of the bus passengers. She received cuts and bruises about her arms.
The a John Doe warrant was issued today by Justice Jack Landell, Traffic Officer Yoder was reported to have traced the ownership of the Cadillac machine to Davenport. A charge of reckless driving now stands against the driver of the passenger car, reported to have been going more than 50 miles an hour at the time of the accident. The sheriff's office predicted a charge of failing to render aid after an accident might later be lodged.
Headed from Long Beach, the bus driver, H. Callanan of Santa Ana, attempted to pass two large wagons carrying beets, figuring he had sufficient space to do this after a small touring car had passed the wagons from the opposite direction. The Cadillac, however, Callahan reported to officers, followed the small car around the wagona, approaching at terrific speed.
Fearful of a tragedy, Callanan turned the safety bus into the deep ditch, the large steel bus turning on its side against the far side of the bank. Its human cargon was thrown to the front and into the NEW TODAY

PRETTY L. A. GIRL ASKS FOR $100,000
Mary T. Lantry, 24, and pretty who made serious charges against Edward H. Cookingham of Santa Ana, owner of telephone exchanges at Laguna and Huntington Beach, when she demanded more than $300,000 from him for alleged breach of promise and asserted intimate relations, today filed her second amended complaint in the superior court at Santa Ana.
In this action, after charges of a delicate nature had been stricken from the original complaint under court order, the pretty Los Angeles girl asks $100,000 for asserted breach of promise. Cookingham, she alleges, wowed her while she was receiving his attentions in the states of Idaho and Washington under the purported pretext that he was a single man. He has a wife and a daughter in high school.
Miss Lantry came in for considerable attention when she attempted to commit suicide at the county hospital. Her nude body was seen hanging in front of a widow, according to official records, and hospital attaches saved her when they rushed into her cell and untied a sheet she used

Studebaker sold at 29½, up 1½ from Friday's low and Stewart-Warner continued its "come-back" with a rise of one point to 54½ oil stocks as a rule were inactive and not disposed to join in the rally in prices, though Maryland, Phillips and the Pan-Americans under a small turnover agin-ed half a point. Copperers were strong and sugar stocks steady.
Week end trade reviews were generally favorable, representing good signs of trade revival both in America and Europe.
Stock sales today 66,800 shares; bonds 26,443,000. Sales of stocks for the week 3,084,200 shares; bonds 364,877,000.
