LITERARY MASTER DIES IN FRANCE
Anatole France is dead. The great literary star of France has gone down to rise on the eternal shores. His works live. They will charm the world for centuries.
Critics will pass upon the merits and lack of merit of the work of Anatole France. Some will praise his brilliant, vivacious style. Some will praise the man, as a charming conversationalist, or mayhap, as the passionate lover of peace. Let all be said that may be said, but here is one thing—that may be said about him and his writings that may be overlooked in the appraisals—Anatole France was the apostle of the short sentence. This alone entitles him to a crown of glory from those who write and those who read. "The most beautiful

This alone entitles him to a crown of glory from those who write and those who read. "The most beautiful sentence? The shortest," he said. Banish the semicolon, his advice. Make the passage from one period to another straight, continuous, direct. This gives delicious flavor to his style. It does to any style. The long, complicated sentence belongs to another age, not to this swift, strenuous era. Blessings on Anatole France for preaching the literary gospel of the short sentence—and for practicing what he preached by writing in short sentences!

DINNER STORIES
The Irishman was away on his holidays. One morning he came down to breakfast with a very worried frown on his face and an open letter in his hand. He looked so gloomy and ate so little that presently one of his fellow holiday-makers asked him what was the matter.
He replied that he had just had a letter from his sister to say that she had had an addition to her family.
"You don't look very pleased him by Oxford.

"You don't look very pleased about it," answered the other. "Is it a boy or a girl?"
"That's just what is bothering me," was the reply. "They didn't tell me in the letter and now, bejabbers I don't know whether I'm an uncle or an aunt!"
A gentleman was one day walking down a street in Belfast when he saw an old Irish woman begging. As he was passing her she stopped him and said:
"Could ye spare a copper for an auid woman, sorry?"
The gentleman, taking pity upon her, gave her sixpence.
"God bless you, sorry!" said the old woman, "and may every hair of yer head be a candle to light you to glory."
Taking off his hat and showing a bald head, the gentleman said dryly:
"It won't be much of a torchlight procession, madam!"
