WALNUT DRYING
METHODS STUDIED
Orange-co walnut growers will be given a special opportunity Thursday, Oct. 16, to study a number of dehydration plants in operation, according to the county farm advisor. Interest in this project has grown steadily in the last few seasons to the point where growers are watching very closely the results of dehydration plants that have been established recently in the county. The artificial dehydration of walnuts is a comparatively new science in the walnut industry, being somewhat stiff in the experimental stage. Improvements, however, have been perfected during the past two or three years to the extent of resulting in a more uniform and economical process for taking care of the nuts as they come from the orchard.
The San Joaquin Fruit Co. is one of the pioneers in this project and have operated three types of dehydrators with considerable success. Carl Newman, manager of the fruit company, has made a systematic investigation of all types of drying machines and is convinced of their logical place in the handling of the crop. He has recently introduced a new type of dehydrator which promises to handle the drying problem very efficiently. This is known as the Ward dehydrator. Two other machines are also used. They are the Bishop machine and a homemade machine that has been developed on the ranch.
The Calif. Walnut Growers' Ass'n has appreciated the possibilities of artificial dehydration to the extent of retaining Prof. A.W. Christie of the College of Agriculture for the present walnut season to examine the needs of the industry along this line and make definite recommendations following his investigations.
Prof Christie will be one of the principal speakers on the walnut tour scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
It is planned to meet at the dehydrator plant of the San Joaquin Fruit Co. at 2 o'clock to see the
