At Ascot
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11.—The final night racing program of the summer season at Ascot speedway will be staged tonight. Nine races are on the card, with many new drivers to face the starting flag of "Babe" Doyle, ex-football hero. In addition to the Ascot favorites, Leon Duray, Frank Lushart, Floyd Roberts, Cliff Wheeler and others who have been holding the fort all summer, Tom Mitter, noted eastern dirt track
Duray Will Leave
Soon for Australia
Leon Duray, the principal star at Ascot since DePalma sought the board tracks again, will sail for Australia on Tuesday to compete on the new Sydney speedway.
Duray will be missed in the south, but is expected to return in time to do a lot of racing a little later on.
UP MT. BALDY
IN 17 MINUTES
Carrying representatives of the Times, Examiner, Herald, and Illustrated News, a non-professional driver, Norman Etges, drove an Essex stock model sealed in high gear up Mt. Baldy to the end of the trail in icehouse canyon in 16 minutes, 50 3-5 seconds, breaking all speed records, regardless of gear used.
The grades were up to 23% per cent or 4315 feet in 7.1 miles.
The stunt is regarded as particularly interesting to Orange and Riverside county motorists, which are more familiar perhaps even than Los Angeles county drivers with Mt. Baldy.

Plans for the expenditure in the south including Orange county of more than $5,000,000, the 1925 state allotment, were announced this week by the State Highway Commission, following a gathering in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11.—The final night racing program of the summer season at Ascot speedway will be staged tonight. Nine races are on the card, with many new drivers to face the starting flag of "Babe" Doyle, ex-football hero. In addition to the Ascot favorites, Leon Duray, Frank Lushart, Floyd Roberts, Cliff Moore and others who have been hoping the fort all summer, Tom Hitter, noted eastern dirt track and speedway star, and Gus Schrader, who used to throw rear wheels at Ascot while going full speed in a race and never upset his car or any of his competitors, will unliven the proceedings.
The evening's thrillers will open with the running of the Italian Victory Crown dash, from which Duray finally was barred because his Miller Special's cylinders were too big.
The longest race of the night will be the "Barbarn Friedchler" Sweepstakes for the Tom face trophy and a chunk of gold coin. The Cooper Hewit Stakes and the Sun Arc Invitational are other events in which many of the stars illustrated News, a non-professional driver, Norman Etges, drove an Essex stock model sealed in high gear up Mt. will drive.
A spectacular touch will be given during the evening by the driving of a Lancia car by Joe Boxenil over a portion of the Thanksgiving Day road race course, with a number of magnesium flares streaming from its rear, while the entire track and grounds are in darkness.
The first race will start at 8:30 p.m.
The regular weekly afternoon racing season will open on Sunday, October 26.
Plans for the expenditure in the south including Orange county of more than $5,000,000, the 1922 state allotment, were announced this week by the State Highway Commission, following a gathering in Los Angeles.
"The state is rushing the construction of the Oxnard to San Juan Capistrano coast route." Engineer Robert M. Morten declared "Only one gap of eight miles has not yet been contracted. This will eventually open a new roadway from Laguna Beach to Serra."
In addition, plans to widen the state highway between Tustin and Orange via Santa Ana were announced. Owners, however, will have to form a district for the purpose.
Owing to the heavy volume of traffic it is believed that the state highway in the northern half of the county also will be improved if a district is formed.
At the Los Angeles end of the highway Whittier boulevard will be imminent all the way to Whitier. Much work on this piece of road for nearly a mile from Pasadena (Continued on Page Three)

the place formerly occupied by
Cadillae Garage Co. and
Frank P. Taggart Co.
The walls have been redecorated a handsome buff with brown trimnings and a border of oak leaves and berries, and besides possessing one of the largest and finest display rooms in the city, Schanhals will have a good parts department, office and rest room. The White Repair Shop, which has its quarters in the rear, will service the two cars.
Schanhals has already sold several cars this month, which promises to be better than either August or September.

125 CARLOADS OF CHRYSLERS ON WAY
Making several improvements on its models the manufacturer of the Chrysler have advanced its price $105. This increase does not cover the changes, which include a duco midnight blue enamel, a windshield that is lowered and raised in a vertical plane the same as windows on most cars, and a Fisher body made on designs of Chrysler and like the ones on the Imperial sedan.
The Imperial and Crown Imperial sedans also have been improved.
Some of the new models will arrive here in 15 days. Eleven sedans were ordered in five minutes at Los Angeles yesterday. Z. B. Polette of the Frank P. Taggart Co. announces that 125 carloads of Chryslers now are on the way to So. Calif.
6 PLIES ATTRACT BUYERS TO MASONS
Mason tires, after a long trial, have proved their worth here says S. R. Walter of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, who announces that his sale is panning out well. Walter did not push the tires before, because he had satisfied himself of their quality, but he is doing so now. He is convinced that the tire is one of the best made, excepting a few of the more expensive standard makes.
For one thing it is a sixply tire, not four-play like most of the others. Walter can show cross sections of all of the four-inch sizes to prospects.
EARLY SNOWFALL
SANTA BARABARA, Oct. 11.
The early fall of snow reported last night in the mountains surrounding this city was hailed by old timers as an indication that a heavy fall of snow this winter will replenish California's water sources. Low temperatures and a high wind accompanied the early snowfall.
MAXWELL SHIPMENTS GAIN
Shipment of Maxwell Motors in September were 7521 cars against 6258 in September of last year.
RECEPTIVITY OF SET UNEQUALLED
The new Kennedy Model No. 15 radio set for the first time solves the problem of controlling at once radio frequency and regeneration, according to A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot.
To control radio frequency alone was thought to be a wonderful achievement when it was still only hoped for, but to control it and regeneration at the same time was regarded as more wonderful still. If not impossible.
The respectivity of the new model in consequence is unequalled by any that have gone before it.
The Kennedy set has long been one of the most satisfactory distributed in the city.
STAR LEADS ALL IN SACRAMENTO Co.
During the first seven months of 1924 sales of Star cars in Sacramento county showed a gain of 245 per cent over the corresponding period of 1923, according to an announcement which has just reached the Appleby Motor Co. Orange-co. distributors.
This is the greatest increase of any car sold there, the Dodge standing second with 18 per cent increase.
The average increase for all makes of car was 17 per cent during the seven months.
SPECIAL SERVICE TO LADIES BEGUN
Attention ladies! James, the Vulcanizer, begins leave to announce that he has added a service car to his facilities and will be ready to change or repair a tire at home or on the road as soon as the phone call comes in.
James is specializing now on Goodyear tires and declares that some of the Goodyear balloons are showing mileage of 15,000 miles and up. It is still too short a time for such cases to be numerous, but they are increasing steadily as time enough passes within which the mileages can be rolled up.
James continues to carry the other makes of tire, also, which he has been handling for from one year to several years past.
Mid-summer
Continued conservative provement in the automobile industry is indicated in the Auto output of 288,477 cars and true the total estimated from ship reports submitted at the direct meeting of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce month, says the Auto Club of Calif.
The figure is 2 per cent above July, which in turn exceeded J by 0-1-2 per cent.
The rate-of production is 22 cent under a year ago, which regarded by leaders in the industry as not unexpected since put in the early months of year was much higher than 1923. Stocks in dealers' hands are well liquidated, and press manufacture is based on orders from the field. The totals for seven months are: 1924, 2,704, 541; 1923, 2,529,481.
Motor manufacturers believe that the gains in the automotive trade is a reflection of general improved industrial and farm coections.
Dealers report that the fall oook is excellent, with expectations of sales much better than t summer and with farm trade ceeding last year.

Lost an Umbrella? Ask the Auto Club
Every motorist, whether resident or visitor in So. Calif., has an interest in the lost and found department just inaugurated by the Auto Club of So. Calif. With more than half a million cars constantly in use on 15,000 miles of highway it is but natural that a large number of articles will be lost. To reduce to a minimum those unrecovered, the auto club has established a lost and found department under the direction of Arthur C. Davis, which will undertake the big job of restoring all found articles to their rightful owners. Even umbrellas are found when the new crop is picked.

WORKING OVERTIME ON 15 NEW MODELS
The Studebaker factories now
are working overtime to meet the demand for the new models, and
400 cars per day is the output.
Not all of the 15 new models
are being made simultaneously. The duplex phasstons were given precedence. Three sedans,
the standard, special and big six models, are coming thru the factory.
This month the standard will be practically at capacity, the special at 80 per cent and the big six at 60 per cent of capacity manufacture. The standard six five-passenger coupe will be at 90 per cent capacity before the month is closed.
The special six Victoria is in manufacture and full capacity for the month will be reached soon. If it hasn't been already.
The big six coupes have been started and the standard, six roadster will be started on manufature Nov. 1. The standard six coupe roadster and special six roadster will not be on production until Dec. 1.

It looks today as if there would not be a bit of surplus space on the ground, floor of Pythian Temple when the show opens on the afternoon of the 20th.
An interesting announcement yesterday was made by Herb Davis, manager, that several expensive makes of car not represented here can be obtained for the display. Davis, who managed the auto show given in connection with two or three different Orange County Valeneia Shows and also was in charge of the County Fair at Santa Ana, declares that cars ranging in price from $500 or $600 to $7500 will be exhibited. Spaces for the show will be drawn for.
Some novel ideas have been suggested for the parade. One is that given models, such as sedans, tourings, etc., be grouped together so that the contrasting merits of each will be brought out and (Continued on Page Three)

The appeal of its simplicity, convenience and durability is instant and

you draw down the four roller enclosures and in thirty seconds your airy open car is a smug, comfortable enclosed car. With equal ease the enclosing sides can be rolled up into the roof and you have an open car again.
The Duplex body is especially built
for the roller side enclosures, the roof is framed and shaped in steel—permanently beautiful and steelstrong to support the rollers, and the upper part of the Duplex is integral with the lower part. It is a unit body which harmonizes perfectly in beauty and function.
There is no other body like it on any other car at any price—because it is exclusively a Studebaker creation, made only by Studebaker. You can buy the Duplex from no other maker.
The new Duplex is available for each of the three new Studebaker chassis—the new STANDARD SIX, the SPECIAL SIX and the BIG SIX.
And these three new chassis are the evolution of the famous chassis of the five preceding years. Each year they have been improved and refined.
But this year the new models are climaxed with every tested and proved betterment that experience and science have thus far developed.
They are paramount exemplars of modern automobile design.
