Munger) A five thousand barrel well in the Los Angeles Basin has become a rare thing, but the Shell company sprung a great surprise by bringing a one at Dominguez yesterday. On the Reyes property No. 11 drilled to 4220 feet did the trick. The Reyes producer is not only the biggest producer ever brought in at Dominguez but is the largest producer of high gravity oil in Southern California. The new Reyes producer is making 29.9 gravity oil and that it is alive one is evidenced by the fact that the tubing carries a pressure of 170 pounds and the casing 780 pounds. Reyes 11 is starting off under the most favorable conditions for long life production possible and should make its owners a wonderful well. The success of the Shell company at Dominguez is in keeping with the company's expansion policy and the announcement of the taking of the Dominguez Homestead Ranch a 140 acre property east of the Associated Oil Company's De Francis' lease came with little surprise. The deal involved a million dollars and is said to be a record of the Dominguez field. Rosecrans is the mystery oil field of Southern California. Even after some 48 wells have been under drilling operations for a number of months, the field with 5 producers and deep tests down all the way from 4000 to 5000 no geologists or petroleum engineer of repute is willing to even venture a guess on the probable extent or trend of the field. Away out on the northwest front of the Rosecrans district the Sentinel Oil Company's Brown 1 has passed the 5000 foot mark and no production tanks seem to be in operation. FOR RENT—Unfurnished house, bath and garage... Away out on the northwest front of the Rosecrans district the Sentinel Oil Company's Brown 1 has passed the 5000 foot mark and no production tanks seem to be needed. Just a little south east of the Sentinel is Joseph Dabney's 4900 foot well with no showings to speak of. Coming on down a little further southeast is the Julian Petroleum Company's Athena Community 1-A drilling at 4600 and nothing of importance to report. In the central west section of the field a little distance from the original Potter well is the General Petroleum's Amstoy 1 at 5900 feet. The Union Oil Company's Trust 1 is approaching the 4950 mark without getting anything important. Oil operators are asking themselves "Where is the structure and where does the oil go?" A little encouragement for the southeast section of the Rosecrans field was revealed by the U.S. Royalties Company. The Royalties well at 4568 and 4745 peaked up thin lenses of oil sand and will set a string of 8-1-4 casing at 4500 feet. The U.S. Royalties well had been looking rather doubtful until this showing was picked up. Encouraged by recent developments in the southeast section the Sandberg Petroleum Company will resume operations on its 4500 foot Steele well and continue drilling. Sandberg shut down some months ago to await developments. For several months the Inglewood district has been making a united and exhaustive effort to get on the oil map of Southern California under the able direction of the Standard Oil Company. A number of deep wells have been drilled, the Potter and Smith now at 4400, the Farrel well at 5220 Los Angeles Investment 2-1 at 4020, and the Los Angeles Extension 1 at 5905 feet. The field it seems will have to content itself with surface or shallow production as the Los Angeles Investment No. 1-1 drilled to 2135 feet is on the pumping and is credited with a 150 barrels of 18 gravity oil. At 1100 feet this well showed a little oil of about 14 gravity, and the decision was soon made to go ahead and see if there was not something a little better ahead. The getting of commercial production at 2135 feet marks a new era in Southern California oil development especially in the Los Angeles Basin. Just what the production at this depth will amount to will require more time and more wells to tell.
