DENY WOMAN ON HUNGER STRIKE MOUNT VERNON, Ill., Sept. 26 — Denial that Mrs. Elaine Sweetie, in jail in Marion county, charged with murdering her husband, Wilford, in a "love pact" with Rev. Lawrence M. Hight, was on a hunger strike was made today by Sheriff Vogt following the circulation of reports that the comely widow had refused food since she had arrived there following confession of her crime. The sheriff admitted, however, that Mrs. Sweetin had eaten but lightly although this he attributed to an overwrought mental condition. "She is just weakened and in a terrible mental and physical condition," Vogt said. "She has not eaten any heavy food since she was brought here. See has kept on a milk diet but as to a hunger strike—that is absolutely untrue." Today, three days after she had confessed her crime, Mrs. Sweetin openly renounced the all-consuming love which prompted her to administer arsenic to her husband. Of Hight, her "perfect love," she said: "I never want to see that man again—hever. "He made me do it. I didn't want to kill Wilford. When Hight first suggested it, I said I wouldn't, but he kept after me, telling me to do it. I argued for a month but I guess I was in his power for anything he said I thought I had to do. "It was hard to give Wilford poison. When he didn't die the first time, I gave him the arsenic. Hight came to the house. He handed me a peach and slipped me a note which said to give him some more. In fact, all the time my husband was lying in bed sick" THE RADIO K H I — THE TIMES 6 to 5:30 p.m. Art Hickman's Concert Orchestra from the Biltmore Hotel, Edward Fitzpatrick, director. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Children's program presenting Prof. Walter Sylvester Hertzog telling stories of American history. Lawrence Hight, derelicted now, seek alien homes in the shadow... "He made me do it. I didn't want to kill Wilford. In fact, all the time my husband was lying in bed risky. Hight came to me with those awful notes urging me to place more money in his victuals. I couldn't even myself." But for Hight, the all-consuming fire still burned. "I know she still loves me," he declared in his cell in the dingy old fashioned Nashville jail. "She's just talking now. It can't be otherwise." S. Q. R. OPENING The S. Q. R. store is all dressed up for the autumn opening in its new fall clothes and every window has an artistic setting suitable to the season. Stacks of bright silks and woolens line the walls and show to even greater advantage on the center counters. From the tip of Milady's toe to the jewels for her hair, "wearables" may be found in this fine new stock. Corridal invitation is extended to all women in Orange-co to visit the store particularly on this occasion. After November, a lot of political inspiration may be reclassified as exasperation. HIGH FRUIT PRICES Four lots of oranges at $8.20 to $8.40 and four other lots at $7.40 to $7.95 featured the New York auction market yesterday. The top price at Chicago was $7.05; also at Philadelphia. These figures have rarely if ever this season been anywhere near equalled on a single market, altho $8.40 is a trifle under the top price of the season. Only a few lots on the other markets brought $6 or more. Plain Dealer Classified Ads produce results. Try this medium.
