PRESENT SCALE CONDITIONS HERE We note that in our field inspection quite a percentage of the black scale are now beginning to lay eggs. There is also a percentage of scale which is fully matured and just ready to begin egg laying, which is commonly known as the rubber stage. They are very hard to kill at this stage of development, and every grower knows exactly what to expect when trying to destroy black scale in the egg stage. Therefore, we would ask at this time that everyone be very careful when fumigating and make sure that with infestations of black scale the insects are small enough so that they will succumb to fumigation or other treatments. The importance of this can be realized when we consider that female black scale produce on the average of about 200 eggs and with a mortality of about 40% we still have 1200 insects to deal with, so if we leave only one mature female black scale out of every 1200 on the tree the infestation will be as great in the course of a couple months after fumigation as it is at the present time. By careful inspection the grower can determine whether it will pay him to fumigate for black scale now. Purple scale seems to be in ideal condition just now and if it is the major pest the orchard should be treated at once; but if black scale is doing more damage than any of the other scale pests the orchard should be carefully watched and as soon as the young scale emerge from the next hatch treatment should be given before any of this generation have gotten beyond YORBA LINDA, Sept. 25. (Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hoben are the proud parents of a baby girl born at Whittier the last of last week. The little one has been named Patricia Ann. Miss Geraldine Haynes of this place left a few days ago for a three months stay in Canada after which she will go to England. She goes as the guest of her little friend "Baby Peggy" of film fame and will be with the latter on "location." Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Eichler spent Sunday with former Yorba Linda residents, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Quigley at Rialto. Mr. Rawl Madsen of Pullerton was a business visitor here on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Thoe Roach attended the General Petroleum picnic at Pasadena on Thursday and report a jolly time. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Knight and daughter Marjorie spent Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Knight Sr., at San Bernardino. Friends here will regret to learn that Mrs. Plummer Stuart who formerly resided here is at the home Loma Linda sanitarium and will soon undergo an operation. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Trotter and Mrs. Clara Irwin have moved into their new home at Homewood, Buena Park. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Miller entertained a friend from Hollywood over the week-end. The cornerstone of the New Friends Church was laid on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock and the services were well attended. The program was as follows: FIND NUDE BODY OF SLAIN GIRL GARY, Ind.. Sept. 25 — nude body of Anna Tomiclek, bound with strips torn from dress and underclothes and gored with a sand filled handle chief, was uncovered in a sand skirts of Gary today by police to the spot by Peter Vergogno 30, charged with luring the boy into his auto Monday. At shallow grave in which the body had been placed, Vergogno, police cried as the crime. The finding of the body end a statewide search started Monday when the girl was seen get into Vergogno's car. We goine questioned Monday, denied he had driven the car, but said his brother John might have then was released and John tried en into custody. Circumstantial evidence, however, continued to point to Pet as the driver. Today, after several hours of grilling, he rolled teced to take the police to the place where he had buried the body. There he told police the girl had asked him for a ride. He told of driving her out to the sorted outskirts of the city, where she dragged her into the woods stripping off her clothing placing the rag improvised from a handkerchief and sand in his mouth, he said, he attacked her then choked her to death and buried the body. RICHEFIELD Purple scale seems to be in ideal condition just now and if it is the major pest the orchard should be treated at once; but if black scale is doing more damage than any of the other scale pests the orchard should be carefully watched and as soon as the young scale emerge from the next hatch treatment should be given before any of this generation have gotten beyond the stage of development where successful fumigation can be applied. Of course, with red scale it seems that the winter fumigation has given better results, therefore, if the black scale are carefully watched the treatment may be timed so as to control both black and red scales. This warning is given in an effort to avoid disappointment on the part of the grower and the condemnation of the fumigator, because black scale cannot be successfully treatable in the egg stage and we can only hope for a partial control where a considerable percentage of them have reached the well known rubber stage. We stand willing to inspect as many groves as possible with our force in order to avoid the expenditure of money by growers in treating at this time. If upon inspection the scale are found in a vulnerable condition treatment may be given and the grove relieved, but a treatment now without inspection will result in only a partial control in a large percentage of the infested orchards. Therefore, we would urge upon the grower the necessity of carefully examining infestations of black scale in his orchard before treatment.—A. A. Brock, Horticultural Commissioner of Orange co. WON'T RECONVENE WASHINGTON, Sept. 25.—Any chance of the Wheeler-Brookhart senate committee reassembling at this time to resume its probe into the department of justice, apparently went a glimmering today. Sen. Henry F. Ashurst, Dem. of Ariz., and Sen. Geo. H. Moses, Rep. of New Hampshire, the only members of the committee in the capital, both announced today they had no intention of reconvening the committee. You just simply can't teach school Where hookworm children are the rule; Hookworm pallor, frames so frail, That's why hookworm children fall.
