SPORTS DONE by BROWN Harry Wills' victory over Luis Firpo the other night gives rise to the belief that the negro will be the next man to meet Jack Dempsey, heavyweight king. Perhaps he will be. Meanwhile fans will spend much time discussing the negro's chances with Dempsey. These few points are offered for consideration in such discussions. Wills could not knock out Firpo although he was able to hit him at will for 12 long rounds. Dempsey annihilated Firpo in two rounds. Dempsey met and defeated a boxer as clever as Wills but with the kick of a mule—Tommy Gibbs. Which proved that a shifty, scientific boxer like Wills holds no terrors for the champ. As far as the outcome of the Firpo-Wills fight is concerned, it was a terrible disappointment to all interested fans. Wills gained considerable prestige by checking Firpo's bull rushes. His victory was clouded, however, by the fact that he violated the rules flagrantly with his holding. His effective punches were delivered while he openly held Firpo with the other hand. The knockdown he scored on Firpo was a questionable one. Many critics said the blow was struck as the men came out of a clinch at the referee's order. As for Firpo, the defeat cost him considerable prestige. He is not done, however. A decisive knockout victory over Jack Reagan or some other fair heavy will place him in demand again. As far as the bout concerns Dempsey's appearance it can be stated without question that there That is the logical day of the year to hold a title bout. Labor Day is late, toward the tag end of the outdoor season, when fans are short of money, time and "pen." So there'll be nothing much doing the heavyweight game until next July. R. Norris Williams, captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team since 1919, may find himself in the odd position of being left out in the cold when the first 10 players in the American ranks for 1924 are selected by the ranking committee. The committee is faced with the task of comparing at least four others with the ranking ten of last year in arranging the list. Which means that without a doubt one or two veterans will suffer in the comparison. And Williams seems destined to be one because of "insufficient data," as the committee puts it. The five newcomers who are knocking at the gate for recognition are George Lott, John Hennessey, Wallace Johnson, Watson Washburn and Howard Kinsey. Tennessee, Indianapolis star numbers among his exhibitions of tennis victories over Gerald Patterson, Australian star; Brian Norton of South Africa; Jean Boirota of France and Harada Jap star. Wallace Johnson was in the select ten two years ago, but was dropped last year. His 1924 victories over Hennessey and Fraser J. Hunter call attention to him again. A state department order June 27 based on an opinion the attorney general of Jungle holding that the 18th amendment extends to the Philippines was said to be the basis of consular refusal to permit shipment of liquors to the island. McCORMAC, President Tennessee, Indianapolis star numbers among his exhibitions of tennis victories over Gerald Patterson, Australian star, Briar Norton of South Africa, Joan Botrafe of France and Harada, Jap star. Wallace Johnson was in the select ten two years ago, but was dropped last year. His 1924 victories over Hennessey and Franier F. Hunter call attention to him again. Wachburn is an ex-member of the elite. His showing in the national tournament against Harvey Spodgrase and Robert Kinsey indicated his return to form. Kinsey’s work in the doubles cause officials to name him on Davis team. His singles play brilliant. Lott drew the spotlight when won the junior net title and the defeated Williams in the national championship matches. Williams, handcapped by injury sustained in the Olympic games, was unable to play up his old form in his matches, lowing his return to this count. Up to the time of his misfortune however, he had shown that was set to give a good account himself in the late season match including the national tourney. The men must be selected actual playing form for the season, however, so Williams probably will be eliminated. The sufficient data” reason is a local one in view of the fact that his playing, while he was fit on a bar with that of many others. If the New York Giants fail to repeat their triumphs of the past three seasons in winning the National league bunting, John M. Graw supremacy in the major general field will not be threatened. If Bill McKenzie shoves Pirate crew into a world’s sort he will be a newcomer in the ranks. Uncle Robbie has won the pennant for Brooklyn. But M. Graw has won nine National League flags. He rang the bell the first time in 1904 and retained the championship next summer. Flowed five years of vain effort.
