This is the $52,000 gold cup race over part of the speedway. Arrangements to have the European speed kings come to the United States were initiated by James Val, well-to-do Italian sportsman and race fan, who returned recently from a three months' trip to Europe. Regarding Val's trip, President Bentel said: "The German, Italian, French and English makers told Val that they will freely support our big race with entries if we permit their fastest special racing cars to compete. Although we have already received 18 semi-stock car entries for the race, we would rather have eight or ten of the great European drivers and their fastest speedway and road racing cars pitied against a bunch of America's premier racing machines than to worry about helping the manufacturers rehabilitate the stock car in the racing sport. "In addition, for the last two months the two biggest manufacturers of racing cars in the United States have importured us to change the conditions of the big event so they could enter several of the machines which are writing new chapters in racing history. "I can assure our patrons that there will be more than the maximum starting list of 30 cars entered by November 1. The field will have to be reduced by qualification trials." DRIVERS ARE OBEYING LAWS County Getting Much Better Results Than City of L. A. Orange County motorists are way ahead of those of the metropolis in conforming to the laws against glaring headlights, according to "Pop" Warner, head of the motorcycle squad, who claimed in a talk over the phone last evening that there was no comparison. Warner's observation is confirmed by others, who have marked the difference at night in Orange County and in Los Angeles. The number of offenders in the county is steadily being diminished, and the work of checking up. STAR SALE LEADER IN PORTLAND, ORE. OAKLAND, Sept. 20—With the completion of full sales figures by city, section, and county for the states of Oregon and California, a definite picture of sale success during August has been presented the Star Motor Co., of California. Particularly important, according to officials at the Oakland factory of the Star Motor Co., are the results of August, 1924, sales in Multnomah-co, Oregon, the county in which Portland is located, which gives the Star car leadership over all gearshift automobiles with a total of 85 retail deliveries. The next highest in Multnomah-co is Chevrolet with a total of 75 cars sold retail during the past month. From all sections of the Pacific coast like favorable results are recorded the Star car, according to the Star executives, who have at hand complete tabulations rushed by telegraph and special delivery letter, and by long distance phone to the offices of Norman De Vaux, president of the Star organization, which serves the Pacific slope territory from its Oakland establishment and plant. FIRST CLOSED CAR HUDSON, CLAIM "There is an unusual combination of comfort, performance and puperb beauty in Hudson and Essex enclosed cars," said H. R. Grove, dealer for Hudson and Essex motor cars." Motorists will be interested to know of Hudson's long and distinctive connection with enclosed cars. "First of all, Hudson' was the originator of the type of car known as sedan. The first sedan ever to be built by anyone was constructed and named by the Hudson Motor Car Co., away back in 1913. At that time, an enclosed car was a great novelty and Hudson's venture was considered a darling departure. Every sedan you see on the street today is a descendant of that original Hudson." "Hudson originated the coach, too, as everyone knows. The coach was first applied to the Essex by the Hudson organization, but it was shortly afterwards made a part of the Super-Six line. In a very short time the coach business has increased by leap and bounds until the coach is by far the largest selling six-cylinder enclosed car in the world. "The Hudson Super-Six coach became the first car in history ever to sell at exactly an open car price. Its cost now is exactly that of the Hudson 7-passenger phaeton. Hudson now makes a greater volume of enclosed cars than it does open ones, which is why this price equality is possible. This is true of Essex, too." ORANGE COUNTY motorists are way ahead of those of the metropolis in conforming to the laws against glaring headlights, according to "Pop" Warner, head of the motorcycle squad, who claimed in a talk over the phone last evening that there was no comparison. Warner' s observation is confirmed by others, who have marked the difference at night in Orange County and in Los Angeles. The number of offenders in the county is steadily being diminished, and the work of checking up on offenders never ceases, according to Warner. Los Angeles continues to fine heavily in an effort to improve conditions, and appears to be doing so. The county squad is busier than ever, now that there are only five men instead of seven."
