NEW JORDAN 8
IN FIRST SHOWING
Jordan owners and dealers were guests of the Lord Motor Car Company, So. Calif., distributors at a private first showing of the Great Jordan Line Eight. "Among those who saw the new car for the first time," said J. E. Walter of the J. E. Walter Co., "was Mr. William A. Barnum, Jr., 2524 E. Thistle, Long Beach. It may not be miles to quote the letter he wrote when the coming of this car was announced some six weeks ago. Here it is:
"To the Jordan Motor Car Company, of Cleveland, Ohio. In September, 1922, the name of Jordan was nothing more to me than the name of a car. On Oct. 22, 1922, a Jordan Six Sedan was delivered to me in Chicago. This was driven from there to Ft. Myers, Florida. Since then it has been driven over 19,000 miles on its own power and shipped over 8000 miles."
"For your information the actual expense for replacement during this time has been $6.10. Upon the performance of this car, please be advised that I have the promise of the first Great Line Eight arriving in Long Beach, having ordered one."
"I want to say this to you, Mr. Jordan, and others in your organization. There are blamed few things I have bought in my life without seeing them and it is a compliment to you and yours that so many people like me have bought a $3450 car because you told them to.
With best wishes for Jordan success, I am sincerely yours, etc."
The refinements installed throut out the chassis, the new power plant, and the body assortments must be seen to be appreciated. Like the Six there are five styles the touring, the playboy, the victoria, the brougham, and the sedan, such in a choice of color finishes. The chassis is 125 l-2 inch wheel base. Spring suspension is on leaves all of chrome vanadium steel. The power plant is a straight line of eight cylinders."

The refinements installed throut the chassis, the new power plant, and the body assortments must be seen to be appreciated. Like the Six there are five styles the touring, the playboy, the victoria, the brougham, and the sedan, each in a choice of color finishes. The chassis is 125 1-2 inch wheel base. Spring suspension is on leaves all of chroma vanadium steel. The power plant is a straight line of eight cylinders with a new firing order that applies to push of the explosions or power stroken on the turbine principle. The bore of the cylinders is 3 inch and the stroke 4 3-4.
The rated speed of the car is up to 72 miles per hour with a minimum of one to two miles an hour on high. It develops an actual brake H. P. of 74 at 3000 R. P. M.
Mr. Walter said, "All of the outstanding successful experiences gained since the first Jordan Six was sold in 1916 have been retained in this young but big brother Eight, and with refinements that must be seen to be appreciated. The most outstanding difference between the two is in body designs. The Eight models are of designs heretofore securable only from the foreign custom body builders.
"These models exceed expectations of what the Great Jordan Line Eight would be. Pictures cannot convey the harmony of lines and of colors and of finish and fittings. More specifications cannot arouse an appreciation of its mechanical refinements and developments. This can be sensed by the layman as well as by the engineer only by riding in and driving this Eight."
"I am fully convinced," continued Mr. Walter, "that this new car justifies the faith and confidence placed in Edward Jordan, in the Jordan engineering policies, and his rare insight in sensing the needs and desires of the public."
"Like the Jordan Six—but to a greater degree, the Eight has been developed to keep pace with the physical needs and the social progress of owners and potential owners of Jordan cars. It has been conceived and consistently developed year after year on the basic principles of proven practices simplicity of construction, economy of maintenance, ease in handling and with enough reserve power to meet the unusual but important emergency demands for additional power or additional speed on hills or in the traffic.
To my mind to those who have already placed their orders for the New Jordan Great Line Eight" concluded Mr. Walter, "it expresses the ultimate in appearance in performance, in prestige and in the economy of quality."
The Jordan Six remains unchanged in prices and in models.
The big news of the week in the automobile world is Studebaker's announcement of new models.
Because of the dominating position which this manufacturer holds, motorists throughout the city have been flocking to the Studebaker showrooms to see these newest achievements in motoring luxuries.
There are 15 entirely new Studebaker models, and each model is a complete refinement of the previous line. The designs are new—something never before seen on an American automobile. Studebaker has again pioneered in distinctive vehicle building.
Motorists are now offered by Studebaker 'the following new line: An entirely new type of open and closed car, a new medium weight six, a new 4-passenger closed car, optional 4-wheel brakes of remarkable design, genuine balloon tires—15 original and distinctive new bodies.
A creation originated by Studebaker, which, it is believed, will supersede the present day open car is the new Duplex body. This Studebaker is an open car which can be converted magically in five seconds into a waterproof, snug and dry, closed car of unsurpassed quality.
All of the Studebaker close bodies are made by the Studebaker Corporation in its gigantic new body plant, the last of which coating tea million dollars, finished in 1923. It is claimed that these modern plants with very latest modern machinery
PARA-BELL TIRES IN KEEN DEMAND
August was one of the best months in the history of the Reliable Tire Co., according to Roy Mendoza, the proprietor, Mendoza sold 15 tires in one day.
He has sold the same number of tires, all Para-Bells, to a single Anaheim family.
A set of Para-Bell balloon tires—five casings and five tubes—was sold recently by Mendoza, the purchaser getting four handsome oak wheels and five rims free with them.

LACQUER FINISH REACHES ANAHEIM
The new lacquer finishes, the most perfect automobile coatings yet achieved, are now being put on by Willets and Hochull at their shop on S. Log Angeles-st. The firm, which has all sorts of experience back of it, has the equipment to do this work right.
Many of the manufacturers now are using the lacquer finish on their cars. Adopted from China, these finishes represent the most distinct progress made in a generation in automobile enamel. Durability was the object sought, and no coatings have proved so lasting.
FOUR CYLINDERS BUT NO VIBRATION
Here is what a Long Beach woman thinks of her Chrysler, says C. S. Follette, branch manager of the Frank P. Taggart Co.
The Chrysler-Maxwell built car is now far in advance of previous conceptions of four-cylinder performance and value. One of its most notable improvements is the practical elimination of vibration, but the touch of Chrysler engineering genius is evident in every phase of riding and driving. Maxwell is now the complete realization of the high standards toward which the new organization began to build three years ago. A ride in the good Maxwell and to drive it will decide for yourself whether anything in the four-cylinder field at anywhere near the price can match it. Having driven one of these Maxwell cars for the past two years I cannot speak too highly of it.

Standard Six and Special Six seven-passenger on the Big This type of car separates driver's compartment from car compartment with a slid-dash partition. It is claimed these modern plants with the latest modern machinery are not by the driver's foot. Great braking force can be applied instantly and almost without effort by operating a valve which turns on the hydraulic power. The brakes are unique in this respect and different from anything on any other American car. Inasmuch as the braking power instantly stops when the wheels stop turning, the rear wheels cannot remain locked and the front wheels cannot lock at any time. There are no adjustments necessary for the front wheels and only two points which require lubrication. Undoubtedly a tremendous amount of interest will be created by the new Studebaker four-wheel brakes.
Studebaker advises its public, however, that two-wheel brakes are all that is required. But in the event that four-wheel brakes are demanded it is able to give, so it claims, the simplest, most effective, and mosturable and safe system ever put on an American car.

Notably the engine now is in unit with the clutch and transmission, but even more important than that a new force feed oiling system has been designed introducing an entirely new feature. The returning oil is strained before it goes back to the crankcase; thus the pump has the entire crank-case supply of oil strained and cleaned. There is no possibility of clogged screens or a lack of supply of oil for the highest speeds.
The entire amount of oil is pumped through the motor three times for every mile of travel under a varying pressure of 15 to 25 pounds, according to the speed.
Studebaker still retains the medium compression low speed design, the same as that employed by practically all of the leading makers of this country. There has been an increase in the weight of crank-shafts on all models. There are bigger bearings and longer connecting rods in two models. Studebaker is one of the very few manufacturers of medium priced cars that uses the expensive system of matching its crank-shafts on all surfaces. By this process it secures perfect balance and thus reduces vibration to the lowest possible minimum.
It is expected that the Studebaker display rooms throughout the country will be the mecca for thousands of people who are interested in new and unusual designs in motor cars for the next several weeks.
