PRES. COOLIDGE HONORS PERSHING (By Kenneth Clark) (L. N. S. Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON, Sept. 13. President Coolidge today paid a glowing tribute to General John D. Pershing, who, having reached his 64th birthday, retired as general of the army of the United States. "General Pershing has already received from the congress the thanks of that body and of the American people, and I now extend to him the thanks of the nation for his eminent services and feel certain that I voice the sentiment of the entire citizenry of the republic in wishing him long life, happiness and prosperity in the retirement he so richly has earned." President Coolidge declared. In praising General Pershing, President Coolidge said he wished "to remind the country of his eminent services and of the nation's obligations to one whose accomplishments contributed so largely to the defense of the world's liberties." Because of his successes in the Indian campaigns, the Spanish-American war and the Mexican border troubles in 1916, Pershing's selection as commander of the American expeditionary forces in the world war was a natural consequence, Mr. Coolidge said. "The American troops under his command, by their presence, high qualities and skillful management assisted materially in the defeat of the central powers of Europe, which resulted in the freedom of civilization from autocratic rule," added the president. "In his position as chief of staff since the termination of the world conflict, he has been a mainstay to the executive in preparing an army of modest dimensions to be LIQUOR RESULTS IN $400 FINES Tom Walton, 39, North-st and Placentia-ave, this morning was fined $400 in Judge Kuchel's court on charges of disturbing the peace, drunkenness and possession of liquor. The arrest was made last night on No. Los Angeles-st by Officers Tipton and Baxter, when he was heard swearing on the street and raising a disturbance. He was said to have been drunk and one-half gallon of liquor was found in his possession at the time of the arrest. Officers later raided his home and found about three gallons more. He was fined $1400 on the drunk and disturbing the peace charges and $300 on the possession charge under the city ordinance. The liquor in his house constitutes a separate offense, and will be prosecuted later, it is said. Chief of Police Moody said this later charge would be pursued. He said that his liquor business is a serious proposition, and that he hoped Waltice's case would teach some more "booze-bounds" to "quit sucking eggs." YUNGBLUTH AND TODD DIRECTORS Stockholders of the Golden State National Bank decided to increase directors from seven to nine, and Mr. S. W. Todd and Mr. F. A. Yungbluth were elected directors. Mr. Todd is well known throut Orange-co., as a wide awake and public-spirited man, and is particularly interested in the upbuilding of Orange-co., He came here in January, 1911, and being impressed with the many advantages of this section, accepted a position with the So. Calif., Edison Co., division, and upon the purchase of the gas division by the Southern Counties Gas Co., Mr. Todd was made district manager by the Southern Counties Gas Co., which position he held until December, 1919, when he resigned to accept the position of general superintendent of the Industrial Fuel and Supply Co., which position he still holds. Mr. F. A. Yungbluth is one of our oldest and most successful business men. He came to Anaheim in 1893, 31 years ago. He took up the business of merchant tailor, which he continued for five years as an employee, and was known for his steadfast honesty and courteous treatment. Believing that he could better his condition, he launched into business for himself in the spring of 1899, and from then until now Mr. Yungbluth has continued in the merchant tailor and furnishing business, which has grown by leaps and bounds. While his business greatly increased, in greater proportion did his friends increase, and it is seldom now that anyone speaks of him as Mr. Yungbluth but by the more familiar name of "Pritz." He became a citizen in 1901, adopting this as his country, and then joined the National Guard, which he was in for seven and one-half months. "Right thinking men have concluded that an adequate military plan will do more for peace than any other measure." Rev. Thomas H. Walker took the place of Rev. Walter L. Thornton of the First Christian Church of Fullerton, who was assisting in a similar celebration at Fullerton. As shown in peace time politics, the possibility of enemies at home is not so remote as many may think, said the local minister, who said he had been with some of the boys overseas and knew what unpreparedness meant. He had also seen boys home from the training camps in Florida; where, because of lack of national preparedness in respect to sanitation, training, etc., they had become physical wrecks. Otherwise they might have been able to cross the Atlantic. There were two classes of people who oppose preparedness. One consists of those who don't know that a criminal class exists, ready and eager to drag a nation into war, the other the class itself. The pastor declared he had a boy in Shanghai now, and hoped his son was at present where he should be, ready to defend helpless American women and children. In the World War the minister had three sons in the navy, the marines and the infantry. MORE MORE ORE MOR NO ACTION UPON FUNDING OF DEBT WASHINGTON. Can you imagine Will Rogers encased in a highly tailored dress suit? Wearing an immaculately white shirt-front, patent feather boots, and stove-pipe hat? Can you visualize the erstwhile Pollica comedian capitulating to such luxuries as perfume-scented pocket handkerchiefs and hair-dressing lotions? To those who have seen Rogers either on stage or screen, such an idea will appear impossible and proposterous. However, in "Un-centured Movies," his latest Pathie comedy at the California tomorrow and Monday, these are the depths of dandified degradation to which the renowned cow-juncher and rope twirler has shamefully fallen. Jack Pickell leaves Monday for Hanford and San Francisco. Attention! Anahiem Business College 239 NO. LEMON ST. OPENS Sept. 15 PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE Enroll Now!
