DARING REALISM IN “BABBITT” "Babbitt" which opens at the California Theater tonight is an unusual photoplay. Every effort was made to put across the same convincing sledgehammer blows or portraiture and realism that made Sinclair Lewis' book such a best seller. In doing this Warner Brothers believe they have poured the requisite stuff into the mould of the picture, so that the great army of average film fans might be carried away by its story. They have succeeded. The cast consists of Willard Louis, in the title role; Mary Alden, Carmel Myers, Gertrude Olmstead, Raymond McKee, Maxine Elliott Hicks, Virginia Loomis, Robert Randell, Cissy Fitzgerald, Lucien Littlefield, and the Loomis twins. The author himself chose Warner Bros. to picturize his book, offering it to them despite higher offers made by competing firms. Warner Brothers' work in "Main Street" convinced him that they were the best medium for transmitting his shrewd study of the average American business man without augury falsity. Harry Beaumont directed and the adaptations was done by Dorothy Parnum. "Babbitt" runs the whole gamut of American life. There is the dull, drab respectability of the Babbitt family at their dour breakfast. There are torried scenes between the fat, egotistical hero and his charmer, Tanis. The real estate office appears as true to life as the one down the street. And the jail scene is another piece of faithful realism. Buster Keaton in "The Love Nest" and International News are on the same bill. Don't forget that tonight is Gift Night and that there are many valuable prizes to be given away absolutely free. The car, which is said to be entirely unlike anything ever offered before, is a solution to the open-closed car problem which motorists have known since the "horseless carriage" first came into being. The name of this revolutionary car, it is known, will be the Duplex Phaeton, and there will also be Duplex roadsters, combining the outstanding advantages of present-type open cars with the snug comfort and all-weather protection of the closed car. Besides this new-type car, reliable sources confirm the rumors that Studebaker will announce a new sku, and 15 all-new body styles. It is the first far-reaching announcement to be made by this famous manufacturer of the fine cars since 1918. Studebaker, ever noteworthy for its innovations in motor car buildings, offered several revolutionary changes in automobiles in 1912. Then, in 1918, after a series of gradual refinements in its models, Studebaker gave to the world another entirely new model. Now, in 1924, comes the third great cycle in Studebaker progress—which has maintained an important influence on the automobile industry as a whole, and on the benefits in which the public has shared. From a high Studebaker official came advance word today of jealously guarded innovations that should prove the outstanding automotive event of 1924. Exact information regarding the secretly-designed new Studebaker is being carefully withheld until Sept. 14. And Studebaker officials declared today that they will rely on newspaper advertisements exclusively to inform the There are torried scenes between the fat, egotistical hero and his charmer, Tanis. Although an English court issued an order restraining her husband from ejecting her from his London residence, all knowledge of the action taken in her behalf is disclaimed by the Duchess of Westminster, now in New York. For rumor has it that the new "Studebaker Duplex Phaeton" combines the advantages of the open and the closed in motor cars. Quantity production—plus remarkable Studebaker facilities in modern plants and equipment—will keep the cost low, the price being that customary for open cars. Besides, it is reported that the new Studebaker standard six will be another instant success. It is a powerful vehicle—bigger and more roomy, with many charmng new features. Besides the standard six, there will be introduced handsome new models of the special six and big six. "For two years the great Studebaker creative staff of designers, engineers and production executives have worked intensively toward this achievement," said a Studebaker official today. "The 15 new Studebaker cars to be announced in a few days will make history in the automobile industry, we sincerely believe." "In design, materials, work-manship, beauty, mechanical efficiency, and durability they set new standards of quality and value. Moderate prices on the new models are made possible by $52,000,000 invested in plants and equipment, 70 per cent of which are now since the war. Hence the savings of most modern methods and operations are made possible." Fifteen bodies, it is reported, have been designed by Studebaker. All will be built complete in the modern new $10,000,000 body plants here in South Bend. Significant of the new trend in motor cars is the fact that all the new cars weigh from 100 to 200 pounds more than previous models, are longer and lower. Monty Banks is star at United. Monty Banks is now a star. As a star he "has arrived" amid a blaze of thrills and comedy glory. For some years this clever comedian has confined his screen work to short subjects, his biggest comedy being a two-reeler. Why Monty Banks after his great work in "Racing Luck" which came to the United screen for its local premiere yesterday hasn't been doing feature films is beyond conjecture. Banks is entitled to first rank consideration and we dare say we won't be the first to start favorably comparing his work with other film comedians now leading the industry. Banks is a natural comedian and in "Racing Luck," has an unroariously funny vehicle that was written by recognized screen writers, Gene Haver, and Lex Neal. "A Racing Luck" stands out as a modern day story of love, romance and adventure and is packed from start to finish with laugh-making scenes there is every reason to believe that there will be more fat days for Monty in the longer-reeled subject field. We hope as a feature production star he is here to stay. The story starts in Italy where Monty is a free-care tiller of the soil. There comes rosey and aluring reasons why he should come to work for his uncle in his restaurant and falls in love with his uncle's adopted daughter, Bosina. Into Monty's life comes a Nemesis, a sinister influence, namely Tony Mora and his present-day guerilla band. Tony has power and he trails Monty everywhere. Every job Monty lands Tony has taken away from him. There are a number of thrilling fights, one in the cafe being as amusing as it was exciting. The auto race is a corker. Significant of the new trend in motor cars is the fact that all the new cars weigh from 100 to 200 pounds more than previous models, are longer and lower. By those who have seen the new models, their beauty is said to be of the most unusual character. Straighter lines, higher radiators of new and distinctive design, higher body sides, new lights, curves that are extraordinarily graceful, with unusual effects in new colors and finishes are said to be the more outstanding details of appearance that many judges pronounce the most distinguished ever offered here or abroad. Specific data on the new Studebakers will be forthcoming in announcements planned for next Sunday. The great Studebaker plants are now operating night and day, preparing for the display in the United States and foreign countries, immediately following the official word of introduction. This announcement by the Studebaker Corporation with new models—the first revolutionary changes in designs in six years—is given unusual importance by automobile manufacturers, in view of the fact that Studebaker is conceded to be one of the largest single manufacturers of quality cars in the world. Whenever Studebaker announces something new—the entire motoring public is highly interested. This is because Studebaker is regarded as the outstanding pioneer in introducing new achievements whether of body designs or mechanical efficiency. INDIANS FOLLOW FASHION SACRAMENTO, Sept. 12. Monly, who knows about, as much about driving as he does deep-sea diving, goes in heralded as a champ and he comes out of a wild, daring side and explosion sadder but richer. All ends well but not until Tony almost snuffs out Monty's life. The supporting cast, particularly Miss Pergnson as Rosina and MacDonald as Tony, give admirable support. The direction by Mr. Raymaker is faultless. Vaudeville at Fairyland Saturday and Sunday The sharp crack of a policeman's revolver stirred the echoes of peaceful Hollywood. A powerful touring car slowed down and in motorcycle policeman stopped alongside. "Don't you know you just killed a man?" he demanded of the chauffeur. "I didn't—" "I saw ye," interrupted the cop. "You ran right over him, back there where the crowd is look—" He turned and almost fell from his motorcycle, for the "corpse" was advancing toward him with a sensual smile. It was Richard Tal-madge, the most daring thrill artist in the films, who had plunged under the speeding automobile for a scene in "Danger Ahead," coming to the Fairyland Theater tomorrow and Sunday. There are two very high class acts of vaudeville on the same bill. Harry Side in "Character Impressions," an act of high quality with many laughs.
