PERSHING LAUDS GLOBE FLYERS WASHINGTON, Sept. 11.—The army round-the world filers, resting in Washington before setting out for the Pacific const, were presented to General Pershing at the war department today. The presentation was made in a formal military manner by Major General Mason M. Patrick, chief of the air service, after which the filers wire put "at ease" and sat down for a chat with the general. Pershing said their achievement had "blazed a new trail in the development of aviation" and that their record "would stand for a long time." HOLD OFFICIALS TO ACCOUNT DENVER, Sept. 11.—The only hope for "honest government" in the United States is for the citizenry to hold all public servants strictly accountable for their acts. John W. Davis declared today on the eve of his second keynote speech in the west. The Democratic nominee reached here this afternoon from Estes Park where he rested for three days in the Colorado Rockies. In a speech at Boulder while enroute here, Davis renewed his demand for "honesty in government. States Stand on Defense Test Day As my name is on the program for the invocation on Defense Test Day I ask you to print a few lines explaining my position. Those who favor the demonstration and those who do not are all saying "I am for peace." My prayer will be for peace and the coming of the time when defense tests will not be held. In the controversy going on, I recognize the men who protested against a mobilization as being equally patriotic with those who favor it. Their protests in my opinion have caused the change of name to Defense Test Day and brought out the avowal that peace is the real object of the demonstraction. Hating war, I deprecate the parading of school children on military occasions for we all know how marching to martial strains rouses us, as De Gallienne says: "to love the thing we loathe." But when our soldiers and those under legal orders respond to the call of duty I honor them and am willing to stand beside them while EARLY STOCK TRADING WEAK NEW YORK, Sept. 11.—The stock market returned to its dull and narrow routine today and price changes were the smallest of any full session in a week or more. Activities of the professional traders dominated the whole market; new assaults were made on stocks which were supposedly in weak technical positions; pools advanced their favorite stocks, only to meet with different support from the trading public. More interest was taken in the grain markets and prices for wheat and corn advanced sharply in the early trading, and cotton retracted some of the ground it has lost in the last few sessions. The bears were unable to continue the depression of stock prices as generally as in the end of Wednesday's market, they were apparently no hurry to cover their short lines. Stocks offered in quantity met with good buying support but bullish interests seemed content to permit prices to remain slightly under the last closing levels. The number of individual stocks enjoying rallies of any consequence was very small and a small number of industries also was reported. Oil stocks resisted efforts of bearish trades to mark off the gains which these stocks have made in the last few days. Under the leadership of Houston Oil, Mexican Seaboard and Marlane, the oils again displayed good form. The rallies as a rule were neglected today and permitted to sag Northern Pacific lost two points at 62%; Northwestern 1½ at 59%. The first meeting of the Yorba Linda Woman's club was held in the club rooms on Tuesday evening. Such a splendid program had been arranged that it is to be regretted that a larger number was not in attendance. The new president, Miss Marsha Vernon, presided and after a few words of welcome Mrs. E. E. Knight, county club president, in a few words of praise for Mrs. S. W. Acker the local retiring president, presented her on behalf of the local club, with a general Federation pin. Mrs. Acker responded with a few gracious words of appreciation and the program of music and readings followed. Miss Geraldine Mills of Whittier gave several whistling solos accompanied by her teacher, Miss Williams. Miss Ann Hobson also of Whittier gave readings which were much enjoyed. Mr. Edward Records pleased the audience with beautifully rendered violin solos and Mrs. Stanley Tutton accompanied herself for a vocal solo and responded to an encore. Mrs. Seamons introduced a friend, Miss Monroe, who has recently returned from a concert tour and who gave generously several musical selections, the most popular of which was perhaps the one with which she had entertained the boys of the A. E. F. in France during the war. Several new members were taken into the club during the evening and Prof. Boyce of Fulton high school gave a splendid talk on "Why the United States is not in the Peace Conference." The evening closed with a "watermelon feed" and those in attendance report a pleasant evening. PROFESSIONAL YOU NEED NOT BE SICK! Dr. Joseph H.
