THRILLS IN "LONE WOLF" AT UNITED Imagine a high-powered aeroplane shooting through space and another fast moving air machine just below and then picture a man dropping from the upper car to the lower and then later using a parachute to return to his original car. Sounds like a miracle, yet such a feat is successfully accomplished by Jack Holt in the big production, "The Lone Wolf," which is coming to the United theatre Tuesday for a three-day run. The justly celebrated novel by Louis Joseph Vance has been given a highly-thrilling version for the screen with the leading roles played by Jack Holt and Dorothy Dalton. The cast of "The Lone Wolf" is the biggest in "names" that has ever been cast for a single film. In addition to Jack Holt and Dorothy Dalton, there appear Wilton Lackage, Tyrone Power, Charlotte Walker, Lucy Fox, Edouard Durant, Robert T. Haines, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Alphonse Ethier, Paul McAllister and William Tooker. The story of "The Line Wolf" is widely known, having for its main character the premier crook of the world, who always worked alone and for that reason won the sobriquet that had become internationally famous. Jack Holt plays the title role with Dorothy Dalton cast as the attractive Lucky Shannon, the trusted agent of the celebrated parishian band of high crooks, known as "The Pack." Romance of an extremely exciting nature, wild chases after criminals, hand-to-hand fights, realistic aeroplane scenes and a love story that for adventure and thrills excels all other film narratives. Billy Sullivan will be seen in another of those race romances, one of the series of "Fast Steppers." This picture is "The Threatens Appeal to Pres. Coolidge" WASHINGTON, Sept. 8—Canon William Sheafe Chase of New York again threatened today to go to President Coolidge with his demand for the deportation of Luis Angel Firpo, Argentine prize-fighter, before his bout with Harry Wills on Thursday. Commission of Immigration Husband said that there had been no unusual delay in the case. Firpo had a right under the law. Husband said, to be released in New York under bond, pending a hearing. ATTEMPTS TO HALT NEW JURY INQUIRY WASHINGTON, Sept. 8—Former Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall, who is under indictment here for alleged conspiracy to defraud the government in connection with oil lease transactions in California and Wyoming, took steps today to halt a new grand jury investigation of his official activities while a member of the cabinet. At the request of attorneys for Fall, Justice Siddons of the D.C. supreme court issued an order requiring Atlee Pomerene and Owen J. Roberts, the government's special oil counsel, to show cause why the probe should be continued. A field of 379 golfers started, divided over the Del Monte and Pebble Beach courses. The low handicap men, playing their first round on Pebble Beach, found a recky, variable wind blowing over the ocean course. Otherwise conditions were perfect for championship golf, a brilliant, warm drenching course. Failure of players like Hunter, Hugh, Wilhelm and Webster to close to the par of Pebble each furnished the first surprise in the tournament. On the result of the morning's play, Neville, whose game is now at its best, came back to win. HELEN WILLS WINS 3RD STATE TITLE BERKELEY, Sept. 8.—Miss Helen Wills today sat securely on her home tennis throne. For the third successive year she annexed the California women's singles title by defeating Mrs. May Sutton Bundy, 6-3, 6-4. Miss Wills was at her best and while Mrs. Bundy played her usual strong game, the champion was never in danger. Miss Wills, paired with Ray Casey, won the mixed doubles championship also. Miss Charlotte Hosmer and Herbert Suhr were defeated, 6-1, 6-4. Ray Casey, in a hard-fought match, defeated Roland Roberts in the singles, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4. Cranston Holman retained his junior title by defeating Allan Herrington, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4. The men's doubles will be decided Tuesday, which will be designated as Helen Wills Day. Miss Wills will appear in an exhibition match against Mrs. Bundy. Miss Wills will be presented with an automobile by her admirers. $5000 BASEBALL RECEIPTS STOLEN PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 8.—Police today renewed their search for the armed, masked robber who early last night held up Fred B. Rivers, secretary of the Portland baseball club, and George Varanisan, his assistant, at baseball headquarters, making a getaway with the $5000 in receipts from the Portland-Vernon double-header. The trail of the robber led to the east side, for a taxi driver reported that a swarthy, slight man carrying a heavy satchel, directed him to drive across the river shortly after the robbery was committed. An automatic gun found in the cab was a further clew being followed by the polloe. William H. Klepper, president, knocked on the office door while the robber was busy scooping up the money. Klepper found himself confronted with automatics when he was admitted. He was then taken into custody. FIRPO FAVORITE BY 8 TO 5 TODAY NEW YORK, Sept. 8.—Having gained the newspaper decision over His Majesty, the Law, in conniving to obtain a postponement of deportation proceedings until after the fight, Louis Firpo automatically became an 8 to 5 favorite today on Broadway to defeat Harry Wills at Jersey City on Thursday night. That is, odds of 8 to 5 were offered but there were no takers in the immediate vicinity. The sharp-shooters appear to esteem Wills' chances none too highly. They think the business is in the bag. Firpo has the punch and the endurance of comparative youth. He also is reputed to be a tough citizen in heavy going, altho the writer is somewhat disinclined to subscribe to this theory. Wills has the speed and ring brains plus a punch that is as good as the next as long as his hands hold out and he is permitted to hit and hold at once. On the question of Wills' ability to laugh off the punishment he must take hangs the ultimate issue. A ring veteran of 13 years' standing, to say nothing of several times sitting—he hasn't dalled with a real puncher in recent years and may discover that he cares not at all for the crude, coarse work that only Firpo knows. The writer is inclined to think that Wills may fail in this respect. If he doesn't, however, the black man will win as surely as the dawn precedes the sunset. Firpo isn't hard to beat in spite of the fact that Dempsey drew the decision just a bit fine. On that occasion, however, the champion made the mistake of fighting a la barroom, which was Firpo's meat and drink. It is hardly probable that Wills will make the same error. But he must expect to be hit some time during the early rounds and should take it...the thing Over the Del Monte and Beach courses. The low handicap men, playing their first round on Pebble Beach, found a tricky variable wind blowing over the ocean course. Otherwise contests were perfect for championship golf, a brilliant, warm drenching course. L. A. STREET Plain Dealer Golf School By A. D. WALKER, Professional at Anaheim Public Golf Course LESSON NO. 5 Concentrating and Swinging Distance cannot be acquired right away, because you must acquaint all your muscles to time the stroke through practice. The swinging must come automatically; all through practice. The last thing your mind concentrates on, is “that the ball and the point ahead is where I want my ball to land.” In other words your mind is thinking through the ball to that point ahead. The ball can be hit with your eyes shut if your swing is true and correct. Distance is acquired through correct pivoting of the left shoulder which when done correctly winds or twists your body like a spring. The more you can unwind or untwist when hitting through the ball, the greater will be the distance the ball will travel. HEATED ELECTION IN MAINE TODAY PORTLAND, Maine, Sept. 8 — Activity at the polls today indicated that probably the heaviest vote in the history of the state will have been cast before nightfall. Four thousand of Portland’s 27,000 registered voters had indicated their choice during the first three hours of polling. Voting in Maine normally has been light during early hours. That many are voting a split ticket, was shown by the long time voters were remaining in the booths. AUGUSTA, Maine, Sept. 8 — Maine went to the polls today after one of the most heated political campaigns in its history, and, as usual, the whole nation watched. It has been said that “as Maine goes, so goes the Nation.” Early reports indicated there Valentino Return A Screen Triumph We had a feeling last night as we sat watching “Monsieur Beaucaire” on the screen at the California theatre, that we were not looking at the screen production but that in some magic fashion we were back in the 18th century, a silent spectator in the glittering court of that dissolute monarch, Louis XV of France. From which you may gather that the vehicle, which marks Rudolph Valentino’s return to the screen, is something more than a spectacular, romantic, costume-drama. It is a living, breathing document, vivid, historic, accurate and fascinating. My value has not been missubservient to scenic investiture. The huge sets and gorgeous trappings are merely secondary to the thrilling adventures of the dashing prince of France. The fine hand of Direteor Olcott is ever present as a check, lost the sheer magnificence of the piece run away with the drama it unfolds. The atmosphere of the court, noorious for its intrigue and vice, is suggested rather than portrayed, and in a manner that even the most rabidly puritanical cannot censure. In this Booth Tarkington story, from which Forrest Halsey made the adaptation, Valentino is cast as the gallant Duke de Chartres, who refuses to marry the charming Princess de Bourbon-conti at the King's command, and as a result is compelled to flee the country. Under the assumed name of Beaucaire, masquerading as the barber to the French ambassador, he goes to England and manages to gain access to the English court without revealing his true identity. There he captivates the beautiful lady Mary, and incidentally incurs the deadly hatred of Lord Winterset, who finally exposes Try a Classified Ad for results. AUGUSTA, Maine, Sept. 8—Maine went to the polls today after one of the most heated political campaigns in its history, and, as usual, the whole nation watched. It has been said that "as Maine goes, so goes the Nation." Early reports indicated there would be more split ballots cast than ever before and that an unusually heavy vote would be polled. Altho state leaders of both parties predicted victory for their tickets, significance was attached to the admission of Republican leaders that Senator Ralph O. Brewster in his race for governor, would probably run behind the rest of the Republican ticket. The Ku Klux Klan reared its shrouded head throut out the campaign and William R. Pattangill Democratic candidate for governor, has not hesitated to call attention to it. He has repeatedly claimed his opponents were supported by the order. Brewster has been content to defy affiliation with the klan. Re-election of U. S. Senator Bert Aernald is generally conceded. There are several warm contests over the election of congressmen. ENGINEER KILLED SACRAMENTO, Sept. 8.—Richard Galt, chief engineer of the Diamond Door Lumber Co., at Placeville, was instantly killed last night when his machine threey a wheel as he was speeding to Sacramento to visit his daughter. The duelling episodes, especially the one in which Beaucaire fights off six adversaries, are the most exciting ever witnessed on the silver sheet. The supporting cast is thoroughly up to the fine work of the star. Bebe Daniels is the Princess; Lois Wilson gives a faithful portrayal of the poor neglected queen; Lowell Sherman plays the King. All are featured with Doris Kenyon. An Aesop Fable, "Homeless Pups," and Kinograms were also shown. The Doggett's Coat and Badge sculling race, which has just taken place on the Thames, is the oldest surviving sporting fixture in England and probably in the world. Its founder Thomas Duggan was an actor attached to Dover Lane Theatre, and he imbued the race to commemorate the accession of King George I to the throne of England while event occurred on August 1, 1714. October 4 will mark the beginning of the season for inter-sectional football games. Notable among the contests scheduled for that date will be Yale vs. North Carolina at New Haven, Harvard vs. Virginia at Cambridge, North Carolina State vs. Penn State at State College, Army vs. St. Louis University at West Point, Dartmouth vs. McGill at Hanover, and Syracuse vs. Alabama at Syracuse.
