Railings in oil and steel stocks in the foremoon steadied the market temporarily, but in the fourth hour selling again broke out and most of these stocks lost all of their gains. The railroad stocks also gave a good demonstration of their strength in the early trading when Nickel Plate sold up to a new high at 120%; Lackawanna made a new high since 1922, and Norfolk and Western was actively bot on the strength of its negotiations with Pennsylvania for important leasing rights. Southwestern rails were also in demand. Concentration of selling pressure on St. Paul pfd. and common made these stocks the weakest of the railroad group and prices fell as the general reaction continued. Oil stocks responded to the reports that large buyers of crude oil were offering a premium of 25c a barrel for Pacific, Pennsylvania crude and that gas oil and fuel oil prices are firmer. Should the record of crude oil production be maintained as in former years most of the producing fields will begin to show the regular seasonal decline, while consumption will remain large for two or three months at least. Oil stocks have been scraping bottom for nearly three months and are therefore in position to re- WOOLWINE RETURNS LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5—Weak but feeling better than in many weeks, his physicians reported, Thomas Lee Woolwine, formerly district attorney in Los Angeles county, was resting today in a suburban hotel. Should the record of crude oil production be maintained as in former years most of the producing fields will begin to show the regular seasonal decline, while consumption will remain large for two or three months at least. Oil stocks have been scraping bottom for nearly three months and are therefore in position to reflect any decided improvement in the industry. Transactions in American Woolen were unusually heavy as liquidation by stockholders continued. Opening 2½ points lower at 56, the stock sold down to 54½ for an additional loss of four points, a total of 24 points since Thursday noon. Chandler motors was a weak spot in the motor stock list, selling down to 30½ for a loss of 3½ points and recording a new low price for all time. Studebaker started an advance near the opening of the market, rose quickly to 40, but it fell as quickly to 38½ as selling orders flooded the market and its fall was the signal for heavy selling in other motor shares. Mack Truck lost 2 at 93½%. U.S. Steel was down fractionally at 106%, American Can lost 2. Call monday was in good supply, but rates were marked up again to 2½ per cent. Outside markets were somewhat unsteady, wheat and corn declining under pressure. As he walked through the streets he failed to meet any former acquaintance, and left with a feeling of regret. At the Pickwick office, however, he learned the identity of F. C. Westphal, whose father was his close friend. Of interest to him was the news of the fine new home of J. H.
