HARRY MILLER LAUDS CHRYSLER It takes an expert to judge an expert article. Therefore, when the Greer-Robbins Co., So Calif. distributors of the Maxwell and Chrysler, received an unsolicited statement from Harry Miller, noted builder of racing cars, lauding the new Chrysler, the firm realized the reputation which the car was making. Said Miller: "I cannot resist the impulse to write to you about my recent visit to the mammoth factories in Detroit, where the Chrysler six-cylinder cars are manufactured, and to tell you of my enthusiastically favorable impressions. "The Chrysler factory is the most modern manufacturing establishment I have ever visited. Everything is done with the very latest type of machinery. Practically everything that goes into the Chrysler car is made in the Chrysler factory. While castings are made outside the plant, all the machining is done in the Chrysler plant with a degree of care and accuracy that was truly amazing to me. "Tests are being made constantly on improvements and new engineering ideas. For instance, every so often a motor is taken at random from stock and placed on the dynamometer as well as being subjected to other exacting tests. A staff of experts does nothing but this kind of work. "The hollow 7-bearing crankshaft of the Chrysler car is balanced under every known test before it is placed in the motor. The same procedure is followed in balancing other reciprocating parts. "The significance of this vitally important balancing is in its elimination of friction and vibration. This was brought home to me most forcefully when I took hold of the flywheel of a motor just being built and spun it easily with one finger. The pistons and connecting rods were attached to the" NEATH SPRAY OF BRIDAL VEIL FALLS Charles Mathews, electrical engineer at Camp Curry, Yosemite, and a Studebaker Special Six roadster are shown here in front of Bridal Veil Falls, most dellcate of all Yosemite's famous water falls. "The significance of this vitally important balancing is in its elimination of friction and vibration. This was brought home to me most forcefully when I took hold of the flywheel of a motor just being built and spun it easily with one finger. The pistons and connecting rods were attached to the shaft and everything but the tappets were in place. This is the only stock motor that I ever was able to turn over with such an extremely light effort. "The bearings in the Chrysler car are fitted like those in a race car. Instead of tightening them up and allowing them to wear in, they are fitted perfectly and are run in a film of oil. Lubrication of all other parts is by forced feed. "This principle of construction absolutely does away with the old method of breaking in a motor by running it for 1000 miles or more at slow speeds. I am convinced after seeing how carefully the Chrysler car is built that it can be taken right off the show-room floor and stepped up to 40 miles an hour and maintained at that speed without the slightest possibility of injury to the motor. "Such performance is due entirely, in my opinion, to the fact that each Chrysler is so exactly built." "Quick acceleration, volume of power and fuel economy attain remarkable heights in the Chrysler" REMY AND DELCO DISTRIBUTION HERE Robert V. Jensen, well-known local automotive electrician, who moved recently from East Centerst to Broadway and South Los Angeles, shortly will add the Remy and Delco lighting systems to his exclusive Anaheim lines. He will also handle exclusively the Zenith carburetor. He already has the Rayfield carburetor exclusively, and long has serviced the Stromberg. Jensen's handsome station, which is connected with the Hushman Super-Service Station, although an independent business, is attracting a lot of tourist and local trade. car, resultant of its type of motor that incorporates light reciprocating parts, small bore and stroke, all of which have their origin in lessons learned in building and racing cars on the speedways. The Chrysler motor has a piston displacement of only 201.45 cubic inches, yet it develops 70 horsepower. "Very sincerely yours. (Signed) "HARRY A. MILLER." FORDSON CHANGES IMPROVE MACHINE The new Fordson tractor embodies various changes of convenience to ranchers, says Sid Megraw, local distributor of the Ford, Fordson and Lincoln. For instance, the tank containing the gas with which the machine is started is part of the general tank, altho of course enclosed from it. The breather has been changed from front to rear. The coils now are in a dust proof box. A new spark advance rod has been added, so the engine can be killed, without being left merely to die after shutting off distillate or coal oil. McGraw announces that during September and October Ford ammonium sulphate in carload lots can be obtained, but orders must be put in early. AT THE HOTEL PLEASANT M. L. Knowls, E. V. Shannon, C. President Norman De Vaux, who was the guiding light in the adoption of the policy to supply the low-priced field with a motor car that incorporated "big car" features, admits that his fondest dreams have been made to seem like cold thoughts when he considers the unanimity and the genuiness of the reaction of approval which has greeted the initial showings throughout the Pacific Slope states of the 1925 Star cars. "The vibrationless motor in the new Star car is the real article. It takes the curse off the lightweight four-cylinder motor car field," writes Rodney Bridge, Star distributor for San Joaquin-co, one of California's leading counties. "Your action in providing five Fisk balloon tires instead of letting the equipment go at four tires demonstrates to us that your aim is really to provide a low priced, high-grade car and not just another new auto. Congratulations." Such is the comment of Julian Holmes, principal in the H. & H. Motor Co. of Phoenix, Arizona. "The six big car features in the Star, four-wheel brakes, balloon tires, vibrationless motor, Alemite lubrication, force feed oiling system, dry disc clutch, have won great numbers of new devotees here. The consensus of opinion is: Why buy a high-priced car when Star furnishes the same features at a low price?" Thus writes Walter Brown of Walter M. Brown Motors, Inc., Los Angeles Star distributors. NEW CONTRIVANCE ENDS VIBRATION Complete elimination of the annoyance of all motor vibration in its Willys-Knight models is achieved by Willys-Overland by addition of the Lanchester balancer, a new British invention, as standard equipment, in all future production. Cars equipped with this device are now ready for demonstration at all local dealers. Willys-Overland has been able to obtain the American rights to the balancer by special arrangement with its inventor, Dr. F. W. Lancester, F. R. S., a British engineer of outstanding genius. The Lanchester balancer is based on purely scientific deduction with reference to the causes of vibration at all motor speeds. It is a simple corrective device of two small gears attached to the center main bearing of the motor, driven in opposite direction by a third and larger gear at twice engine speed. The third gear is part of the crankshaft. This rotation of the smaller gears which are drilled in order to distribute their weight unevenly, gives equivalent, though opposite movement to the mass of the pistons, neutralizing the vibration which these set up. IDAHO TOWN BURNS SPOKANE, Aug. 30.—Half of the business section and several residences of Rathdrum, Idaho, a town of about 1000 inhabitants in the northern part of the state, are in ruins today following a disastrous fire which late last night caused damage estimated at more than $225,000. Twenty-eight buildings, mostly one and two-story structures, were gutted. A lighted cigarette, dropped in a frame hotel, is believed to have started the fire. A heavy wind fanned the flames. Firemen used dynamitee to prevent further spread of the fire among residences. GIRLS STILL LOST LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30.—A week's franticle search had failed here today to uncover any trace... Firemen used dynamitee to prevent further spread of the fire among residences. GIRLS STILL LOST LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30.—A week's franticle search had failed here today to uncover any trace of Mae and Nina Martin, two young Los Angeles girls who disappeared last Saturday. Detectives said today they would question Edward Martin of Hoquiam, Wash., father of the girls. Martin for some time has been separated from the girls' mother, with whom the children were residing here by an agreement. RECORDS ARE SMASHED IN FEW CARS (Continued From Page One) a Fordson tractor during August. New car sales were better than in July. Six new Oaklands and 22 used cars were delivered by Harry L. Turton during the month. Failure of the new Jordan straight 8 to arrive interfered with sales of the J. E. Walter Co. during the month. The month not being completed, some of the dealers hadn't made their compilations. The Frank P. Taggart Co., Maxwell, Chrysler and Chevrolet dealers, reported that sales had been considerably better in August than in July.
