SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 1924 PREFERENCES OF INDIVIDUAL RULE There are many angles to the used car business, says Herb Davis, manager of Harry L. Turton's certified motor car market, and not the least interesting is the way individual preferences rule. Somebody has a relative or close friend, say, who swears by a certain model of a certain make of car. This model, then, of which he has heard is the one sought by the prospect, and nothing else will do. The care given to the car by owner No. 1 may have had everything to do with the result received from the car, but the prospect doesn't think of that. Or the prospect wants sport colors and trim—plenty of nickel plate, say. And the market must cater to his particular desire. Even the most experienced owners have violent prejudices for or against some special make of car. BANDITS GET $8000 FREEBURG, Ill., Aug. 23.—Seven bandits held up the First National Bank here at 2:30 p.m. today, took between $8000 and $10,000 in cash and escaped in an auto. E. R. Hamill, president of the bank, fired four shots at the men as they ran out of the bank. A posse was organized and pursued the bandits south from the town. For example, says Davis, there is one prominent car of excellent quality and manufacture which has the one defect of not being able to do more than 45 miles per hour without suffering under the strain. It can maintain that pace all day and all night, but to the man who wants to speed at 50, 60 or even 70 miles, the car won't do. Davis and his men try to show the advantages of each model, but don't attempt to force any one car on a prospect, just because they happen to have it on hand. Robert V. Gericke's list not only listed the words he built out of the name "Overland," but to make sure, he told where each uncommon word could be found in Webater's International Dictionary, published by Merriam and Merriam. Mr. and Mrs. Gericke and their little girl were the most surprised people of all the huge crowd that gathered. They had hopes, but like nearly everyone who goes in for a contest they had no idea they would be the winners. Gericke is an employee of a local creamery and has worked hard for what little of this world's goods he has been able to accumulate, so everybody was more than satisfied to see L. J. Secretary-Manager Walter Ross of the Anaheim Walnut Growers' Ass'n indicated today. The estimate just made and forwarded to the California Walnut Growers' Ass'n headquarters in Los Angeles, puts the local crop of soft shells at 19 per cent less than last year, whence b25 tons were picked, or 15 per cent less with new acreage, and the budded nuts at 14.5 per cent less or 10 per cent less with the added groves. There have been two or three settings contrary to custom, and while the first setting was good, the others will be inferior. The present estimate is as of Aug. 26. Sixteen to 20 samples of say 100 nuts each were taken from various parts of trees on 15 different groves. They will be dried shelled, graded and the estimate taken from them. The central organization will not have its figures compiled for several days yet. Some groves here are bearing better than last year; others not so well, partly because of less careful attention.
