UNITED STATES
AID FOR LEPERS
WASHINGTON, Aug. 22.—The United States has extended a helping hand to the stricken lepers of Abyssinia. Twenty-five chau-moogra plants, from whose fruit is drawn an oil that cures the disease, are now on their way to Ras Tafari, prince regent.
A request for the plants was first transmitted to the Department of Agriculture several months ago through T. Clifford Hay of Saxonburg, Pa., who had just returned from the African kingdon.
Because of the slow progress of medical science there, Hay said the Abyssinians had practically no means of fighting the dread aliment.
At first, the request was refused. Each of the plants, because of rarity, is worth a small fortune, and no one could be found to whom they could be entrusted.
Miss Viola Bayne, a representative of the board of foreign missions on the United Presbyterian church, was finally drafted for the duty.
She has sailed for Aden from New York and will go to Addis Abba, Abyssinian capital, by way of Dilbouti. She will be met by Dr. T. A. Lambie, a personal friend of the prince, and an American.
Coincident with the gift to Abyssinia, another messenger of American good will is en route to Slam, from whence the chalmoogra originally came.
Dishes made of layers of fibre have been invented, removing a soiled top layer leaving a clean surface.

Rupert Hughes to American clubwomen: "A great amount of nonsense and idiocy has been hurled at your sex by our sex. It is only surpassed by the amount of nonsense and idiocy hurled at our sex by your sex."
"I wish women would not use their enormous new power to pile up new laws in the land. I deplore the habit you have of trying to save other peoples' souls by trying to repress other peoples' thoughts. Remember it is freedom to choose that makes for character and responsibility."
Dr. Esther Lovejoy: "What the world needs is a moral revival."
Mrs. Edward Franklin White: "Woman's place is in the home; the most powerful protection to the home is the ballot."
Mrs. John D. Sherman: "Teaching science in the public schools and training of science teachers really qualified to teach science in the public schools, are among the most important problems of public schools today."
Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith: "A newspaper is always a trifle better than the patrons it strives to please."
And this—
"Call your religion what you will, but have it in two words, God, and Love."
"Conscript capital for the next war." If this is done there will be no next war. Let men know that no man's money is as precious as any mother's son."
Rupert Hughes again: "I wish humanity would quit telling lies for truth's sake, and doing wrong for the sake of right."
Ida Clyde Clarke: "Don't haggle over ten cent dues. Women's conventions in this country since 1920 have cost more than $10,000,000."
