CROSS CURRENTS IN STOCK MARKET NEW YORK, Aug. 22.—Cross currents ruled in the stock market today. The failure of prices to continue their upward movement in the early trading, and the lighter resistance to selling, pressure, but were seized by the professional element as a good pretext for a wholesale dumping of stocks on the market. The whole market displayed a weak tone as prices of speculative leaders like United States Steel, American Can, Canadian Pacific, Baldwin Locomotive, Etc., broke from 1 to 3 points, representing in many cases declines of from 5 to 10 points from the high levels attained earlier in the week. The selling was done entirely to technical developments in the market; the refusal of the public generally to take an active part in market activities; the accumulation of paper profits which therefore seemed to be endangered; the stubborn attitude of bearish operators who have been fighting the advance all the way thru, and their belief that the present level of prices offered good opportunity for putting out new short lines. When United States Steel broke thru 109, selling became quite general. Independent steels, motors, oils and copper turned horizontally downward and losses were general all along the line. The professionals had very little success in bringing out long stocks, however, and aided by the strength of leaders in the oil and equipment group, the whole market began to climb back to its original position. Nash motors was another strong spot and made a new high at 130. This brot to a close the reactionary movement for the time being, and thereafter prices maintained a distinctly upward trend. As in previous sessions, the railroad stocks were not active but prices were maintained in most of the prominent stocks. Studebaker was an active leader it on themselves to put an interest into the National Lease race. The Dodgers have taken out of the last 15 starts. In ing Pittaburg down the line, assisted the Giants to gain an but if they keep up their pace they will soon be cuir that Giant lead. They are third place now and and week's play like the last will them well up in second. Giants seem to have their numbers as they have lost 13 out of 17 to the McGraw clan. Bill Essick is doing wonderly well in keeping his Tiger so near the top in the coast with the patched up pitching that is serving Vernon at pres. Bill is engaging every one in that has ben, or thinks that will be a pitcher. Bill's addition to his staff of hurler Rankin Johnson. Johnson will star long ago but he may have few good games left in the salary whip. He has been playing down Texas way and is good shape. Essick has recalled Cecil C. Cruz was in the training camp spring but Bill thought that needed more experience. Bill a kid coming up from the Missippi Valley league. The youster will arrive about labor of Shellenbach is about ready to turn up half of the pitching burrow Frank has been about half of the Tigers' staff so far this year. Bryan, who made sure a nice start before he fell a victim of malaise is rounding to and will be back the game soon. From the age of old and young, good and bad Essick may be able to keep a array of pitching talent facing enemy from now on. Give pitching and the Tigers will heard from yet. GOLDSBOROUGH, England — Princess Mary—the Viscountess Lascelle—and her infant son were progressing splendidly today. The baby probably will be named Ulick after its paternal grandfather. LONDON—Great Britain has protested to Russia claiming that the Soviet secret police are continuously watching British charge of Afaires Hodgson, making it efficient for Russians, British and Americans to get in touch with him, it was learned this afternoon. CAPETOWN—The French district governor and 28 natives were crowned when a bridge on the Thiekayes railway in French South Africa collapsed today after being weakened by floods. MADRID—Two members of the Spanish general staff will go to Washington next month to study American military schools. AT UNITED THEATER In "The Man Between," starring Allan Forest, will be seen at the United tonight and tomorrow. This popular and handsome leading man is playing his first dual role. It would be difficult to conceive of two men so different in character, in disposition, in temperament, yet Forest is said to portray each to perfection. One of the two is all make-believe, the spilled son of a wealthy mother, who terrifies everything for appearance's sake. To "cut a swath" he victimizes his own mother, is faithless to his wife, neglects his own child practices trechey against the friend who had saved his life. He is the personification of Sham. The other is a grim, silent man of mystery, without money, or other advantages, critically victimized by fate. But he is genuine and "true blue"—the personification of honesty. By chance the two are thrown together, and, in a most remarkable way their lives are interwoven. There comes a tangle which deceives every one. Allan Forest is very ably assisted by such well known screen favorites as Vola Vale, Edna Murphy, Fred Malatesta, Phoebe McCullough, Kittle Bradbury and little Doreen Turner. To complete this well selected program is William Duncan in stocks, however, and aided by the strength of leaders in the oil and equipment group, the whole market began to climb back to its original position. Reactionary tendencies were also evident in the bond market, when Liberty Bonds and prime industrials lost ground and speculative rails were unable to hold recent gains. American vice Consul Willard Beaulais, at Puerto Castilla, also reported the death of Charles Edward Rimmer, a British subject. The state department immediately cabled for further information. Tommy feels that he is entitled to a few good purses before he has to give up the profession for he is wise enough to know that he can not go on forever. He may get another crack at Dempsey or rather have Dempsey crack him. Tommy is a wonderful little fighter but somehow we fans cannot believe that he would really have a chance against the crushing power of the champion even if he did once upon a time stay 15 rounds in the sae rinng wnth the champ. A crushing defeat at the hands of Dempsey would end the fighting career of Tommy Gibbons. Johnny Dundee has found it necessary to give up his world’s featherweight championship. Johnny has found it impossible to make the weight without greatly weakening himself. Willie Ritchie, once the greatest of all lightweight attempts a comeback in Oakland Wednesday evening, but the come back was a fizzle. Willie did not have any of the dash and power that used to drive all his opponents to cover. William was slow and did not take the aggressive but once or twice and then for only a moment. His opponent was Joe Siminoch of Butte. Joe is a tough customer to try a comeback on. Gee, but our wrestling match is getting interesting. Roy Mabeis is training harder, that is, he is training with more system and more reason than he has ever trained for a match. Roy was greatly perturbed at his showing when Miller made him fade in less than a half hour a few weeks ago, and he has been doing everything possible to prove to his friends that he can come back again. Tom Wilson says that Roy is in as good condition as when he met Santel for the championship, and we all know that Roy went about an hour and 30 minutes that night. Tom should know what he is talking about as he trained with Roy for that match and he has been working out with Roy the last few weeks. Roy has been taking on any and all comers, and is expecting Toots Mondt to work with over the weekend. Gee, but it is going to be a great match. If Roy can go an hour and a half, we all know that Miller can go two and then some. SARGUM PROUTINGS The Brooklyn Dodgers have taken it on themselves to put a new contest into the National League. The Dodgers have taken 13 of the last 15 starts. In taking Pittsburg down the line, they staged the Giants to gain a lead if they keep up their present play, they will soon be cutting the Giant lead. They are in place now and another’s play like the last will place well up in second. The seem to have their numbers they have lost 13 out of the McGraw clan. Bill Essick is doing wonderful well in keeping his Tiger band near the top in the coast Loop, the patched up pitching staff is serving Vernon at present, is engaging every one in sight has ben, orchinks that he be a pitcher. Bick has recalled Cecil Cruz was in the training camp this year but Bill thought that he had more experience. Bill has coming up from the Missis-Valley league. The young will arrive about labor day, ennbach is about ready to take half of the pitching burden. He has been about half of the staff so far this year, Ed who made sure a nice start he fell a victim of malaria, undoing to and will be back in game soon. From the army and young, good and bad, may be able to keep a fair pair of pitching talent facing the team from now on. Give Bill and the Tigers will be from yet. RITCHIE FAILS AT “COME BACK” OAKLAND, Aug. 22.—It was pitiful. Willie Ritchie stepped down from the glare Wednesday night into the dint. He failed to make a hair out of tradition that prohibits copemacks. The referee had raised the hand of youth, Joe Simonich. There was nothing else to do. The former champion had made a most feeble attempt with a weak left hand and a right that lacked snap to prove to a public that is all Missouri that he could come back. A crowd fed on hope that perhaps the comeback theory would be exploded began to file thru the exits before the third round of their four round match was over. Simonich stepped to the attack at the bell and began a systematic mauling. He took every round, and that's all there is to it. In the other bouts Dynamite Murphy won from Jack Burns; Dynamite George and Ernie Owens fought a draw; Nick Newman won from Sammy Olson; Eddie Roberts knocked out Sailor Smith in the first; Vic Morrison technically knocked out Joe Kelly in the third; Doc Snell won from Al Crisp, and Terlo Vargas from Lou Richards. MIXED DOUBLES IN PLAY FOR TODAY By ROBERT KINSEY (Written Especially for L. N. S.) CHESTNUT HILLS, BROOKLINE, Mass., Aug. 22.—Today’s play will be entirely concentrated upon mixed doubles, allowing the finalists of the men’s doubles a day of rest from competition. Johnston and Griffin put over two sets in their match with the Australians, Patterson and Wood, but were unable to win the third. Wood was unable to handle the speed of the Californians, missing easy volleys at the net. NOW PLAYING AT CALIFORNIA BITTERLY DEBATE DAWES AGREEMENT BERLIN, Aug. 22. — Uproar precipitated by the communists today interfered with the government’s plan to open orderly debate on the question of ratifying the Dawes plan. Discorders compelled an adjournment of tue sitting. When the deliberations were renewed the communists again became so noisy that adjournment had to be taken after five minutes until Saturday morning. BERLIN, Aug. 22. — The decisive battle in the reichstag over the ratification of the Dawes preparation plan agreement opened today with the bitterest debate in prospect. “Disolution and a plebiscite” were to be the heavy guns bro forward by the government. CHESTNUT HILLS, BROOKLINE, Mass., Aug. 22.—Today's play will be entirely concentrated upon mixed doubles, allowing the finalists of the men's doubles a day of rest from competition. Johnston and Griffin put over two sets in their match with the Australians, Patterson and Wood, but were unable to win the third. Wood was unable to handle the speed of the Californians, missing easy volleys at the net. Johnston's return of serve was remarkable, averaging as high as five out of six times on his famous forehand drive, which was capable of winning outright. Howard and I won from Hunter and Richards in five sets. Richards was the star of the match. Vinnie volleyed remarkably well but his partner was weak overhead, failing to put away shots which he normally makes. Howard started poorly but improved as the match progressed and toward the end was smashing and serving splendidly. I was steady and fairly good on volleying. The day of rest will be welcome to us and we are looking forward to a match which means more than any other in which we have played. HARRY GREB BEATS NEGRO CHALLENGER FREMONT, Ohio, Aug. 22. Harry Greb, world champion middleweight had today demonstrated his superiority over Tiger Flowers of Atlanta, Ga., a negro contender for Greb's honors. Greb, fighting at catch weights last night, easily won the newspaper decision in his ten round go with the Atlanta. Greb had the best of the fifth, eighth, ninth and tenth rounds. Flowers won the first and the others were even. It was announced at the ringside that Gene Tunnel, light heavyweight champion, and Greb would meet in a ten round no-decision bout at Cleveland September 8. STANDINGS PACIFIC COACT LEAGUE W. L. Pet. AMERICAN LEAGUE When the deliberations were renewed the communists again became so noisy that adjournment led to be taken after five minutes until Saturday morning. BERLIN, Aug. 22.—The decisive battle in the reichstag over the ratification of the Dawes reparation plan agreement opened today with the bitterest debate in prospect. "Disolution and a plebiscite" were to be the heavy guns beforeward by the government. Chancellor Marx, Foreign Secretary Stresman and Dr. Luther, "the government's most experienced gunners, led the fight against the anti-Dawes forces—German Nationalists, Hittites and Communists, who have become uncommon coconades in a common cause." Marx, Stesemann and Luther maintain that rejection of the Dawes plan would mean economic collapse for the Kuhr industries, prolongation of the sufferings of the population in occupied territory and a bar to resumption of negotiations with the allies. Communists threw their sting into turmoil as soon as the session opened. The disorders became so great that the sitting was adjourned until 5 o'clock. The Socialist-Democrats are expected to support the Dawes plan. The opposition—Nationalists and Communists—oppose the plan, claiming it will "ensave and colonize Ceremony." One hundred German Nationallists apparently will hold the balance of power. PUBLIC AUCTION OF REAL ESTATE Ed B. CRIMINAL COURT, CHICAGO: Aug.22—Two bulky text books on mental diseases and insanity were used by defense attorneys today; an effort to block the pathway of Nathan Leopold Jr., and Richard A. Loeb toward the gallows. The authors of these books were state alliances—Doctors Archibald Church, H.Douglas Singer and William Trollin—who less than a week ago swore to their respective beliefs that Loeb and Iopeid were not mentally diseased. Walter Bachrach, for the defense, filled the record of Judge Caverly's court today with huge extracts from these books describing the symptoms of various types of mental diseases, and then fitted "Dickie" and "Babe" into the pictures.
