'24 MOVEMENT OF ORANGES NORMAL
The percentage of this season's California Valencia orange crop moved to date is about in line with the normal movement of the crop according to Orange Sales Agent, Dale C. King, manager of the No. Orange-co. Citrus Exchange. The percentage shipped to Aug. 1 is 58 per cent of the estimated crop as compared with 61 per cent in 1923 and 57 per cent in 1921. The markets at this time are in excellent condition and there is every indication that the remaining portions of the Valencia harvest will be taken at very satisfactory prices, quantity and sizes considered, and provided the crop is intelligently distributed as to markets and shipping days.
Due to small sizes prevailing, the 1921 crop promises to be somewhat less than the crops of 1922 and 1921. These small sizes which must move through the cheaper channels of trade to the consumer who buys for price only, have formed the big problem in handling this season's crop, states King.
Medium to large sizes have brought considerably better prices than usual and the consumer using this grade of fruit has really paid more per dozen for his oranges than is usually the case. The bargains to the consumer have been in the small sizes Competition from summer deciduous fruits has been rather less than last year.
One of the interesting developments of the Valencia situation this season has been the reception accorded California oranges in foreign markets, according to King On Aug. 12, the motor ship Loch Goll sailed from Los Angeles Harbor for Liverpool, London, and Rotterdam, carrying 12,000 boxes of California Valencias. This is the largest single export shipment that has yet been made.

One of the interesting developments of the Valencia situation this season has been the reception accorded California oranges in foreign markets, according to King On Aug. 12, the motor ship Loch Golf sailed from Los Angeles Harbor for Liverpool, London, and Rotterdam, carrying 12,000 boxes of California Valencias. This is the largest single export shipment that has yet been made.
California Valencias are being distributed throut all parts of the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, and from present indications the total volume of export business will be three or four times that of any previous year. The reception of this fruit has been very satisfactory, although it has been necessary to include in these shipments fruit of much smaller sizes than is really desirable to build up this export trade.

BRINGS MOTHER'S BODY 3000 MILES
SARANAC LAKE, N. Y., Aug. 22.—Edmund Anderson, 11-year-old orphan, recently reached here with the body of his mother, guarded by the lad all the way from San Francisco to the Adirondacks.
None of the relatives on the Pacific coast were in a position to carry out the dying wish of the mother, that she might be carried back across the continent and buried in the community where she was born.
It was then the little son insisted he would accompany his mother's body on its nation wide journey. Kindly railroad men and fellow travelers gave a helping hand. The sturdy lad as chief mourner at the burial smiled thru his tears as he noted the loved parent being laid to rest in exactly the spot she had longed for.

SPOILS DREAM OF ENDLESS SPACE
TORONTO, Aug. 22.—Illimitable space is only poet's license. The boundless realms of the ether have been bounded. No longer can you take off into space and fly, and fly, and fly. After flying for so far, you would crash headlong into the floor, walls, or ceiling of the universe, as the case may be.
Further astronomical confirmation for his theory that the cosmos in which Mother Earth finds herself is distinctly limited in extent, was presented for the consideration of mathematical physicists at the British association today by Dr. Ludvik Silberstein, consulting mathematician to a Rochester firm, and an authority on the subject of relativity.
Dr. Silberstein did not present his argument as a hypothesis. He proved it. His methods are not those of the Grecian philosophers, nor does he quote the writings of Moses. He puts in the necessary formulae and symbols, adds a few figures previously provided by the telescope and spectroscope, shakes them well, and out pops the result. True, the figure that tumbles off the adding machine is quite large. So large, in fact, that there need be no fears of planets bouncing against the wall.
Think how far it is from the earth to the sun. Then think of 134. Next imagine 10 times 10 times 10 done 11 times. Then multiply them all together and try and comprehend the product. It looks more like an echo than anything else, and it might hurt to try too hard. This, no less, is the breadth of the universe from east to west, also its length from north to south, and ditto its dimensions up and down.
So sure is Dr. Silberstein of his celestial survey, that he gives as the radius of the sphere of the universe, based on the latest measurements of constants for certain stellar clusters, the figure 6.7

FATTED CALF MUST RETURN TO MOVIES
Hollywood calves are due for a fattening.
This has nothing to do with the return of prodigal sons, but rather, concerns the daughters of the movies.
It applies to that part of the anatomy between the ankle and the knee and Hedda Hopper, film star, is out to fatten the limbs of movie actresses.
A studio for the development of legs is being sponsored by Miss Hopper, whose battle cry is: "Lean legs in the movies must go!"

To this, I answer: I favor horse sense economy. I am posed to the economy that sacrifices the lives of helpless feeble (I think of Playa del Rey), that lets our forests burn; that she of hopeless insane persons off on to the County; that cripple for the blind.

Economic Water Production
—accomplished with Layne & Bowler Pumps
Arid land a few years ago—now prolific gardens and orchards—this is the achievement wrought by Layne & Bowler pumping equipment.
Water pumping by the Layne & Bowler method is extremely economical, attested by records extending over a long period of time. We have found that pumped water is much cheaper than the average cost of ditch water. For instance, the average water lift in 14 wells (equipped with Layne & Bowler pumps) on a Southern San Joaquin Valley farm project is 156 feet. The average cost per miner's inch per 24 hours is 10.1c compared with 24c per miner's inch per 24 hours, which is the average cost at the head gate of public utility ditches.
Hundreds of Layne & Bowler pumps are lifting water from 200 to 500 feet and more than 8300 Layne & Bowler pumps are in
