CHESTNUT HILLS, BROOKLINE, Mars., Aug. 21.—Two California teams, one Australian and one eastern pair reached the semi-finals of the national doubles championship at Longwood. William Johnston and Clarence Griffin of San Francisco will meet the Australians, Gerald Patterson and Pat O'Hara Wood in the upper half, while my brother, Howard, and I will meet Francis Hunter and Vincent Richards in the lower half of the draw. I think the Australians will win today, due to their splendid team work, combined with fine service. Johnston and Griffin may upset the dope, but I am inclined to think that the Australian formation will have its effect on the westerners. Patterson and Wool put out Williams and Washburn, but not until they were forced to the limit of five rebels. Wood was the outstanding star, volleying decisively and showing fine judgment throughout the match. Richards and Hunters came thru nicely, putting out Brookes and Schlesinger in straight sets. Richards was the star in his side, volleying well and showing the form he had in his performances overseas. Schlesinger drove out of court continually. Hunter was making his famous forehand drive down the alley and was also effective in his cross court shots. Howard and I showed our best tennis of the week, eliminating the southern California pair Spoody. ROSY PROSPECTS FOR GRID TEAM Setting Sept. 4 and 5 for the first practices of the high school football team, Coach A. E. Fitzmorris today voiced his confidence in the coming season's gridiron showing. In spite of the fact that some of the best boys on the local eleven have been lost by graduation. Fitzmorris is certain that Anaheim will give Orange another close tussle for the championship. Uniforms will be issued Sept. 3. Last year Anahela and Orange had to play two games to decide it. Orange finally winning. The men lost are Al Hile, captain, who played center and tackle; Wilfred Hayes, quarter and half; Howard Halvey, half, Victor Rees, end; Howard Gregg, tackle; Paul Dickman, tackle, and Walter Gutosky, who however didn't play many games because of an injured knee. Gregg, Lille and Everett Wells, who played fullback and will return, were mentioned for the all-county team. Men expected to return and play again are: Kenneth Sloop, end; Laurence Sweeney, quarter; Wells, Edwin Beebe, guard, and William Seitz, center. All these men were on the regular team. In addition, the following experienced material will be available, according to the coach: Donald Marsh, substitute; Robert Lusk, another sub who was an all-round man; Albert Harris, half and guard; Ralph Jabbs, tackle, who wasn't eligible last season because he was a sent from school the previous semester. SARGUM PROOUTING The Vernon Tigers may not pitching staff but they fight heart, they just hit the Seattle Indians off their last week and came off the extra name. The Tigers to make a lot of runs to a plush their victory and they to make these runs off of good pitching. Red Killifish his gang of warriors left too second place, when he had a week age of climbing in Tiger's expense. Red rates Tigers as the most dangerous contenders, even stronger the Seals. If Bill Essick have four pitchers in shape would cop the pennant but if Pearls that two fliers are all Bill can get going at one time Jimmy McDowell is playing great; hall for the Tigers at ent. His hitting has been a spotty but when he does his tail stays hit. He has the field playing against the ball for him and the infield does crowd him. He is bringing fans to their feet often with wonderful fielding stunts. Jim has had a lot of hard luck season, being injured several which has hindered him in play the game of which he is capable. The pitchers know his durability and work hard with and he is battling against a better pitching than the average batter. The Pittsburgh Pirates are going into the interim season Richards and Hunters came thru nicely, putting out Brookes and Schlesinger in straight sets. Richards was the star in his side, volleying well and showing the form he had in his performances overseas. Schlesinger drove out of court continually. Hunter was making his famous forehand drive down the alley and was also effective in his cross court shots. Howard and I showed our best tennis of the week, eliminating the southern California pair, Snodgrass and Westbrook, in straight sets. G-2, G-0, 6-2. Snodgrass strated well but Westbrook was unstylish through the match. MISSES GOSS AND JACOBS IN FINALS CHESTNUT HILLS, BROOKLINE, Mass., Aug. 21.—Miss Helen Jacobs and Miss Eleanor Goss today won their way into the final round of the Longwood invitation singles. Miss Jacobs defeated Catherine Gardner, 6-2, 6-2. Miss Goss eliminated Miss Lealle Bancroft, 6-3, 6-3. August is the banner month for outdoor sports in the British Isles. In a baseball game at Newcastle, Del., May 9, 1866, the Philadelphia Athletics made 131 runs. Dancers Attention! Commencing next Sunday night we will dance every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Be sure and be at the Riverbank in the Santa Ana canyon next Sunday night if you want to hear a hot band. Fullerton and Santa Ana will probably continue in the "T. N. T." league because the schedules probably have been arranged if not announced. This is the league including Whittier, Pasadena, San Diego and Long Beach. Fullerton was completely outclassed by the teams from these larger cities, and would like to withdraw. Santa Ana also found the competition hard. RE-ELECT Wm. Schumacher (INCUMBENT) In addition, the following experienced material will be available, according to the coach Donald Marsh, substitute; Robert Lusk, another sub who was an all round man; Albert Harris, half and guard; Ralph Jabbs, tackle, who wasn't eligible last season because he was absent from school the previous semester: Eddie Jabbs, on the light weight team Dale Hensley, sub at center, who played in one or two league games; Fred Winters, sub guard; Robert Harsh, sub guard, who was hurt and quit last year; Wiley Rumfeldt, Miles Piscus, right weight; Jack Barnett, Harold Mann, Francis Bode, "Pinkey" Waters and John Daley, all light weight players. Bade may make quarter. Mann is material for center. Waters played left tackle on the light weight team and Daley guard. Fitzmorris also has a man who made the all-star team of Malne. He played guard and may prove a winner. Harris, Ralph Jabbs and Seitz should all make good, says the coach. There have been several changes in the rules, including the following: The ball must be kicked from center of the field; all tees are abolished; hard shoulder posts must be covered; players must come to a complete stop in shift plays, without moving body or feet; on try for point the ball must be kicked from three yards instead of five, and the referee alone can have a whistle. These changes made last season are stressed again: If the ball is kicked across the scrimmage line, the team which kicked it over cannot recover until a member of the other team has touched the ball. If the ball failed to cross the line, they can recover at once. Washington and Detroit can hit a winning stride and keep First one and then the others up to the Yanks and then fall while the other takes a heat. Tigers have been stepping on Yanks' tail for some time till two teams tangled on The Wington lot. The Senators play themselves into second place taking both games from them. The Yanks in the mean gained a lead, which is not not but will take a lot of effort on part of the Senators to overcrowd. Srangler Lewis is giving akko another chance at the w tiling chrown on the 27th and Philharmonic Auditorium. The Pole cannot be accused being a quitter for he just hit or trying and it is reported he is taking a very short slip in the pause for this chance. He defeated the Pole several times but has to extend himself doing. Lewis was defeated a ple of times by the Pole before won the championship. Zhy still has visions of regaining championship. Our own championship mite between Roy Mahee and Ock Miller is coming on nicely. Men are getting top form. Said on good authority that Rin as good condition as when wrestled Santel. He will have be as the Bren boy is one to lad. The longer he goes the better he goes. When Roy is right is some tough himself. It is ing to be a whale of a match everybody is going to be there. Teddy Silva and Gergia Ri fought another draw at Do Vernon Arena. These lads are evenly matched that they have been able to establish a difference so far.
