STATEMENT GIVEN BY W. B. ALLEN
The following statement by W. B. Allen, Anaheim, candidate for the assembly is reprinted from The Santa Ana Register:
"It is the right of the voter to know what any man seeking public office stands for with reference to current political issues. In so far as I have studied such issues I am glad to frankly state my attitude. However I am, and have been for many years, not an office seeker, but an orange grower and realtor, and frankly admit that I have not been formulating political platforms.
"I have noted with interest that in local and other politics, one group will be formed to forward the interests of a number of candidates, all presumably, by that fact, tied to each other and a program. Sometimes the group may even reach into adjoining counties and it is even intimated that in some instances the long arm of Sacramento politics reaches to Orange and other counties.
"I believe that it might perhaps be a refreshing novelty for an official to be elected for once, because of the confidence of the voters in the man; to permit a legislator to be governed in the legislature by his conscience at the time, instead of the ambitions or designs formulated many months in advance.
"Believing that a candidate should not merely stand but stand for something I gladly take advantage of the offer of your space to say that I stand for the absolute independence of every candidate and the legislature in session, from all entanglements which invariably restrict his freedom of action, we have not become a party to any such combination by any pledges, nor in any other way, nor will I in this, or any other campaign."
"I am a Republican—always have been expecte to continue to be until the Republic"
Pershing Prepares to Surrender His Command to John L. Hines
General John J Pershing, commander of the A.E.F. in the world war (left), is preparing to surrender his post as chief of staff of the United States army to Maj. Gen. John L. Hines (right), and retire from active duty, having reached the army age limit, 64. Pershing is the third man in the history of the United States to retire from the army with the rank of full general, the others being Grant and Sherman.
4 ARMED BANDITS GET $150,000 GEMS
BOSTON, Aug. 20.—Four armed bandits today held up Frederick Ives, manager of the Carl Skinner Jewelry Co., robbed him of a box containing diamonds and other jewelry valued at $150,-000.
Police chased the robbers several miles but they escaped in an automobile.

vantage to the whole of Orange-co. That does not mean that it should be attempted all at once and by Orange-co alone, and burdensome expense incurred in these times when economy is being enforced on private individuals, and should be voluntarily assumed by all-public officials. It simply means that reasonable progress such as good business men looking forward to a great future will persistently pursue.
"Those who know me do not need to ask how I stand on all liquor questions. I believe in enforcement to make the country as 'dry' as the law, and the laws so perfected that no secret saloon can take the place of the open soloons, that I have always fought.
"A score of questions might be taken up to make a long interview and needlessly occupy your valuable space, but I believe that the people generally will be better represented by the untrammeled, conscientious efforts of a man, than a long platform, which too often serves only the purpose of a R.R. platform, used to get in on, not to stand on!""
SCIENCE TO FIND IF MARS PEOPLED
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 20.—The age-old question as to whether life exists on Mars may be answered within the next few days.
One of the most amazing attempts in the history of recorded science to tear asunder the veil of mystery separating the earth from terrestrial bodies is about to be made by eminent astronomers.
For the first time in 15 years Friday, August 22, will witness the approach of Mars to within 25,000,000 miles of the earth, the nearest position it has ever attained.
The enormous strides made in the development of photography during the last 15 years, since Mars was last observed, due mainly to the growth of interest in motion pictures, is the main factor which has led a half dozen noted observatories to make the epochal effort to reveal a new world of life to man.
Lick Observatory, atop Mount Hamilton, Calif., pioneered the way some months ago in preparing plans to photograph Mars and by comparison of the Martian photographs with pictures of far-off forests on this earth, will endeavor to say whether vegetation exists.
Lowell Observatory, in Arizona, and the Mount Wilson Observatory in Southern California, are among the other leading western institutions also planning on observing the planet.
