LARGEST DAM TO COST 25 MILLIONS
GLENDORA, Calif., Aug. 20—Construction of America's largest dam is under way here. The $25,000,000 San Gabriel dam and reservoir, whose cost is to be borne by the county of Los Angeles, will take some four years to build.
The dam itself is to tower some 425 feet above the stream bed of the San Gabriel river and will impound 240,000 acre feet of water. It serves a double purpose for a populous valley, conserving water for use during dry periods and preventing floods during storm months. It is but one dam in a program of 12, to cost a total of $85,300,000, which the people of this county overwhelmingly voted in favor of last May.
Not the least interesting phase of this tremendous project is the fact that, while its benefit was primarily for the farmer, the city of Los Angeles pays approximately 70 percent of its cost. What prompted that spirit of generosity on the part of a metropolitan area toward the rural is a question which politicians here have attempted to solve since the election. No aid was sought from the federal government, as might be characterized as usual in an undertaking of this magnitude, and the nearly 2000 precincts in the county, which included the city of Los Angeles, but 14 failed to carry an overwhelming majority for the bonds which cover the cost. And the benefit, as stated, is for the agriculturalist.
James W. Regan, chief engineer of what is known as the Los Angeles County Flood Control District, is the man under whom the 32 dams are to be built.
TESTS REMEDY TO DISPEL FEARS
NEWARK, N. J., Aug. 20—Dr. H. H. Kusby of No. 176 DeGraw-ave, this city, dean of Columbia University School of Pharmacy, was making preparations today to report on experiments with Caapl, declared to be a fear-dispelling drug, which he discovered in the reaches of the Amazon river three years ago. Dr. Rusby and his assistants have been making a scientific analysis of the drug for some time past.
The report will be presented to the National Conference on Pharmaceutical Research, which will be held August 23 in Buffalo, N.Y. Dr. H. V. Army, of Montclair, a professor at Columbia University, will preside. Dr. Arny is president of the American Pharmaceutical Ass'n and also chairman of the national conference.
PIPE ORGAN GOOD AFTER 116 YEARS
MECHANICS BURG, Pa., Aug. 20—The second pipe organ to be built in America in 1807, is still in use, and according to church records has never been repaired.
This organ is installed in Old Peace church, built near here in 1789. The church, one of the oldest in the country, for 50 years was used as a schoolhouse on week days and a church on Sundays.
The organ was purchased from Conrad Doll, an organ builder, who lived in Lancaster. The keys were made of wood, and the instrument had six stops. When completed the instrument had 300 pipes.

SAYS MOTHER LOVE IS NOT INSTINCTIVE
SYRACUSE, N. Y., Aug. 20—"Mother love is an emotion that grows on one and contrary to popular belief, is not wholly instinctive."
"Years of work with girls probation, year spent in investigating home conditions of the girls and her present occupations as child welfare worker, has given Mrs. Margaret Downes the opinion of mother love.
"The ideal mother is one whose character is a combination of mother love and a sense of responsibility. There are women who lack the love but have a duty sense, and others who clutch to love their kiddies intense but waive all responsibilities.
The two I prefer the former, cause such a woman seems too to me to be more worth whitening."
"When a mother first sees her baby she is rarely deeply interested in the child. The full realization of motherhood has not swown over her, and while she feels there is "something of my own," she is only mildly concerned about the infant." If the bad died right then I warrant that mother wouldn't care, but after she regained her strength and came fully conscious of her life the polygancy of her grief would be intense. That is why we movers say we love our children more every day. They've grown us."

BILLY WHISKERS
BY FRANCES TREGO MONTGOMERY
Billy walked up to the dirigible and stuck his nose into the little door. Not being driven away, or seeing anyone, he stepped in and soon was exploring the balloon from one end to the other, with both Stubby and Button at his heels.
"Isn't it wonderful?" said Billy. "Just as cosy and nice as a ship that takes the sea, Staterooms, lounge, dining saloon, kitchen and storerooms galore! Let's hide and be carried off with her when she starts. It is worth being delayed on our journey to have such an experience."
"Indeed it is!" replied Button. "Quick, get under the table! I hear some one coming," warned Stubby.
Billy dodged under the table in the dining saloon while Stubby hid under a shalr and Button ran up a curtain and settled himself on the curtain pole near the ceiling. The person they had heard coming soon passed through the room, and they came out of their hiding places and continued their explorations.
Presently they found it difficult to stand on their feet, and looking from a window they discovered they were slowly rising from the ground. At the same time they found it exceedingly hard to stand still and keep their balance. Before it should grow any worse they ran back and hid where they had before, to await further developments.
"I hope if they find us they don't pitch us overboard when they get up two or three thousand feet," said Stubby.
"Help! Oh, help! I must have some air," whined Stubby. "I am getting seasick!" but neither Billy nor Button heard him as the noise of the engine and propellers drowned all other sounds in the balloon.
“If there was only a deck I could get out on! I wish I had not come. I just hate this way of traveling! It is worse than riding in an elevator in a high building and having the car shot from the bottom floor to the top in one bound.” This thing is worse for it decides to stop, dropping and shooting up again without warning, and it runs upside down and every other way but straight ahead. Oh, oh, oh! I can't stand it another minute. I must have air!”
So Stubby crawled out from under his chair and climbed up on a long narrow window seat directly under an open window and hung out his head. He could only just reach the window by standing on his hind legs as he was so short and the window ledge was so far above the seat. As he looked out he could see the earth fast receding from him. He felt as if it were the dirigible that was standing still and the earth that was dropping from them.
(We hope he doesn't fall out, don't we?)

LONDON AMAZED AT U.S. SPENDERS
LONDON, Aug. 20—American dollars are swamping the cash tills of London.
Englilmen are astounded at the prodigality of Americans with their money, and with wide-open amazement they rake in shillings from American tourists where they have been accustomed to pence from English spenders.
During the International Advertising Convention at Wenbey there were 10,000 Americans in and around London. It is estimated that they spent no less than $5,000,000 in England in a period of ten days.
"We are changing American money for English currency at an astounding rate," said a cashier in the office of Thomas Cook & Sons, as he peered over the top of a heap of dollars that he had taken in exchange for one-pound and ten-shilling notes. By his side there was a neat bundle of letters of credit and bank drafts, all contributed by American tourists.
