WEEKLY REVIEW OF OIL INDUSTRY
In spite of the big well brought in by the Superior Oil Co. at Torrance the production of the field fell off 2000 barrels and is now rated at 60,000. The Superior's well, No. 40, completed at 3825, sprung a real surprise by starting off at 750 barrels. This is the largest well the Torrance field has completed during the month of August. Among other wells of note completed at Torrance this past week were the Chanslor-Canfield's Torrance 60, at 375 barrels; Del Amo 19, at 250 barrels; the Sentinel Oil Co.'s 300-barrel well at No. 11; the Shell Co.'s Scarborough 2, at 3800, a 250-barrel well; and the Standard Oil Co.'s 13-gravity 200-barrel Sentinel-Joughin No. 5.
The General Petroleum Corp. is quitting the Dominguez field after having drilled three deep test holes, ranging from 5000 to 5300 feet, putting down two other well at 1000 and 5500, and expending in all approximately three-quarters of a million dollars. The General Petroleum's Dominguez holdings were located in the southwest section of the field in the vicinity of the Union Oil's world record deep well, Gardena No. 1, drilled to 7320 feet, and the tests made both by the Union and General Petroleum fully justify the abandonment of the properties.
The Shell Co. has had a streak of luck with the Childs well now the most easterly producer in the Dominguez field. Childs No. 1 at 4288, proved a water well. A cement plug placed at 4222 resulted in the solution of the water problem and a 2000-barrel clean oil producer.
Up to and including 4300 feet the Birch Oil Co. has had no satisfactory showings of either oil or gas in its Humphries well, an offset to the abandoned Chase Oil Co.'s well. It is the intention of the Birch to make a deep test well in spite of the surrounding CYPRESS.
CYPRESS, Aug. 20,—(Spl.)—Mr. and Mrs. Hugh LaRue were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Priddy Thursday night.
Mrs. Claude Mitts, formerly Evelyn Flader, who has been seriously ill, has been improving the last few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Monty Inskeep and family returned Wednesday from a week's camping trip.
Calvin Dohm visited a dentist in Los Angeles Thursday.
Vernon Melvin and Mervin LaRue saw "The Covered Wagon" in Anaheim Wednesday night.
Mrs. Ella Cutler made a business trip to Artesia Thursday.
Mrs. Maxwell Cawthon and sister, Eleanor Fablean attended a performance of "The Covered Wagon" in Anaheim last week.
Miss Mae Priddy and DeOle Mosey of Long Beach attended the Orpheum in Los Angeles Wednesday night.
Marjorie Cutler and Hazel Ball spent Wednesday evening at Anaheim Landing and Seal Beach.
Mrs. Norman Jensen of Washington has been installed as nurse at the Cypress Emergency hospital. Mrs. Jensen is a graduate of the St. Mary's hospital in Walla Walla, Wash., and has been in California a year. The hospital is being improved in a good many ways and arranged to fit the needs of the community. One of the outdoor cottages is completed. It has room for two patients and is connected with electric bells to the nurses' quarters. The cottage is built on the open air plan and Miss Grace Minds is the first occupant. Two more of these cottages are to be built immediately.
Little Bobby Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Hunt, had his hand badly cut in a feed chopper last week. He was taken to the Emergency hospital, where it was necessary to take five stitches in it.
Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Sconce and Mrs. Walter Webb attended a show in Long Beach Wednesday night.

Both the Marland and the
United have been successful in
getting water shut offs in their
Domingues well and are going
ahead with drilling. The Marland shut off at 4138 and the
United at 4122. Both wells are
showing up very nicely and point
to a southeastern extension of the
field.
The question of the southeast
section of the Rosecrans field has
been answered by the Superior Oil
Co.'s Maxwell, now the most famous oil well ever completed in
the California field. The Superior
Maxwell, completed at 4403, is a
1200-barrel, 43-gravity oil producer. The well sets a new record
for California high gravity production. The oil carries a gasoline content of 60 per cent, the highest of any crude product yet found in the California district. The Superior Oil Co.'s Rosecrans achievement goes down in the oil history of the Los Angeles Basin as the greatest of the year. The work demonstrated the ability of the company to drill an oil well in wet territory, to log three and distinct oil sands with intervening water sand, and get out of the mass one of the greatest oil wells the oil industry has ever known. The Maxwell producer baulishes all doubts about the hazardous outlook that heretofore characterized this section of the Athens-Rosecrans field.
Important developments this past week at Rosecrans included the finding of water by both the Associated and the Barnsdall Oil Co.s in their Higgins and Rosecrans wells and the necessity of re-cement jobs. The Associated will re-cement at 4114 and the Barnsdall will proceed to 4260, where the Superior was successful in getting a perfect shut off.
Away out on the extreme northwest end of the Athens field the Sentinel Oil Co.'s Brown well holds the center of interest. This is the most important wild cat well now drilling in Southern California as it will determine the trend of the field and prove up several hundred acres of what appears now to be the finest oil land in the Los Angeles Basin. Drilling on the Sentinel is now nearing the 4100 mark and to date there have been no important oil or gas showings.
Long Beach production figures predicted the field with only 154.

Long Beach production figures credited the field with only 154,000 barrels this past week. Among important producers completed were the 200-barrel well of the General Petroleum, the 650-barrel well of the A. T. Jergins Trust Co., and the 75-barrel well of the Pan-American at Union Pacific No. 4. The Pan-American well proved something of a disappointment in that it was finished in the deep sand at 5004 feet and did not make anything like the showing on production it should have made.
Santa Fe Springs and Huntington Beach passed a quiet week in the way of new production. The General Petroleum returned a small well to production at Santa Fe No. 17, and the Pan-American out a 300-barrel well on production at Johnston 2. Huntington Beach. Springs production is now listed at 63,000 and Huntington Beach's daily output is 43,000 barrels.
Recent developments at Ride-out Heights, Whittier, under the able direction of Jim O'Donnell, has led the public to believe that the old Whittley Oil & Refining Co. has passed out of existence. It appears that the Whitley is a very live organization, having some 75 acres of land that appears now to be the cream of the field. The famous No. 6, the well that opened the Heights to deep sand development, is on the Whitley property, and the Pellisier lease on which the field's next producer is scheduled is also a lease of the Whittley Oil & Refining Co. The Whitley Oil Co. has a large number of stockholders in Southern California has gotten out of debt, and now has a bank account of its own, and a very bright future ahead of it.
