Bride Sticks to Husband Named Father of Unwed Mother's Child A Chicago court decided that baby Constance, shown here in the arms of her mother, Miss Bertha Currey, was the daughter of Stanley F. Case, son of a millionaire baker, just as Case was returning from a honeymoon with a recently-won bride. Mrs. Case says she will stick to her husband, who denies paternity of the child. PROFIT TAKING EASILY ABSORBED NEW YORK, Aug. 19.—The reactionary movement which broke out intermittently in the $5.50, lemons $5.95 to $7.05. Philadelphia: higher 200 small, slightly lower balance oranges, unchanged lemons; oranges $5.40 to $6.60, lemons $5 to $6.45. St. Louis: unchanged lemons; oranges $4.20 to $4.40, lemons $3.60 to $4.15. PROFIT TAKING EASILY ABSORBED NEW YORK, Aug. 19.—The reactionary movement which broke out intermittently in the stock market today was not able to gain much headway. Profit taking in the market speculative leaders appeared to be easily absorbed and bullish factors dominated the market for industrial and railroad stocks, tho the volume of trading in the latter was comparatively small. Motor and oil stocks supplied the activity which has been largely monopolized by the rails in recent sessions, the oils showing a tendency to rally in good form on a small volume of sales. Steel stocks were strong today as reports from producing centers told of continued expansion of operations of large steel mills. U.S. Steel is now operating at 53 per cent capacity and market staticians have estimated that the corporation could continue to pay the extra $5c dividend quarterly working at that capacity provided prices do not decline below the present levels. Stocks of the silver and copper producers also reflected the decided improvement in the metals trade which the last few weeks have ushered in. With copper at close to 14c a pound and a great expansion in electrical construction work imminent, the copper companies are about to move from the pauper class. U.S. Smelting was again the leader of the low priced copper stocks with an advance to a new high at 36. Industrial specialities composed a strong feature of the market, Union Tank Car climbed about 6 points higher to 126; Allis Chambers made a 4-point gain and sold at a new high at 64; Sloos Sheffield at 75 was up nearly 3 points, and in new high ground for 1924; U.S. Rubber showed no disposition to halt in the forward movement which has been under way since last Thursday; Textile company stocks were helped by reports of resumption of the operations of important mills and in the case of one active stock, by lifting of professional selling pressure. Both the railroad and the equipments, leaders in the upward movement in prices in the last few weeks, were conspicuously absent from the active trading lists today. Missouri Pac. Pfd. ran up to a new high at 54, but its activity ceased with that achievement in the second hour. Merger stocks were slightly reactionary, on the whole prudent. $5.85, lemons $5.95 to $7.05. Pfd. ran up to a new high at 54, but its activity ceased with that achievement in the second hour. Merger stocks were slightly reactionary, tho on the whole prices were well maintained. Baldwin broke thru 12$ for a few sales but the bulk of transactions were above that price. Grain markets were irregular with losses of 2 to 3 cents a bushel in wheat and corn; cotton steady, up about $1.50 a bale; foreign exchange steady; money in good supply and discounts firm. They were seated in a tram-car—the mother and her little boy. The conductor eyed the little boy suspiciously. He had to keep a lookout for people who pretended that their children were younger than they really were, in order to obtain free rides for them. "And how old is your little boy, madam, please?" "Three and a half," said the mother truthfully. "Right, ma'am," said the conductor, satisfied. Little Willie pondered a minute. It seemed to him that fuller information was required. "And mother's 31," he said politely. An ultra-modern girl—one of those ultra-modern girls who go in for cigarette smoking and cocktails and boobbed hair and knickers and all that sort of thing—well, this ultra-modern girl once said to a wise old woman: "Oh, if heaven had only made me a man!" "Heaven did, my dear," said the wise old woman, "and you'll find him some day, and then all this ultra-modern nonsense of yours will vanish forever." NOTICE TO VOTERS! Citizens who fail to vote at primary election August 26, will be able to sign my nominating petition as Independent (Anti-Prohibition) candidate for Representative in Congress at November election. Voters wishing to sign petition are requested to inform me of such desire; 1019 signatures necessary. I favor LaFollette-Wheeler national ticket. GEORGE BAUER, Newport Beach, Calif., Aug. 12, 1924.
