According to recent study by State Highway Commission N.T.Edwards of Orange contract will be last after by commission for next until a plan has been devised for financing new highway structure. City should have little effect on the ultimate result. Jersey City the battle would be a twelve-round affair with a referee's decision. In New York it will be fifteen yards to a decision. MONDAY, AUGUST 18, 1924 STARTING TOMORROW GREATER MOVIE SEASON THE "ANNA CHRISTIE" GIRL IN HER GREATEST CHARACTERIZATION There's an undercurrent of restlessness in this dizzy age—and this is its dramatic revelation. Thos. H. Jnce presents "THOSE WHO DANCE" with BLANCHE SWEET BESSIE LOVE WARNER BAXTER WALKS INTO HOTEL, CAN'T TELL NAME Laguna Beach was visited last week by a man who did not know who he was, how he got there, where he was going, or where he came from. He walked into the Laguna Beach hotel and being asked if he desired a room, he remarked absently that he did not know. After medical examination they learned nothing further. Searching him they found a card bearing the name of Henry Schmitt, Jr., of Los Angeles. He was taken to the Orange-co hospital for treatment. Saturday is father came to the Laguna beach hotel and he seemed at loss to know just what had happened to his son. He declared that he left the house Wednesday morning perfectly sane and was not heard of again until he was reported in the hospital. Mr. Schmitt is 24 and well educated, his father asserts. Schmitt had lost all memory and could not remember anything from the time he left home until found. He could only remember driving, driving, driving and trying to throw off the razed state of mind. When he entered the hotel he said he had a car, but could not remember where it had been left. Whether he had been accompanied by others or whether he came alone. SEEK OWNERSHIP IN OUTFALL SEWER BIDS OPENED FOR GRADING HIGHWAY Bids will be opened by the State highway commission in San Francisco today for grading and traveling eight miles of the new coast highway between Balboa, the Palisades and Laguna Beach. According to recent statement by State Highway Commissioner T. Edwards of Orange this contract will be the last awarded by the commission for new work until a plan has been developed for financing new highway construction. The statement was considered be equivalent to a declaration that completion of the coast boulevard through Orange-co to Terra could not be furthered until more funds are made available. Completion of the work under the proposals to be offered today would open the entire coast line in this county to traffic as a fair good dirt road is now maintained between Laguna Beach and Terra. LOUDS PREVENT MARS OBSERVATION MOUNT HAMILTON, Aug. 18, great gray bank of clouds from the north served as a curtain which prevented observation of Mars as that planet began to rise into the closest position to earth it has held in 200 years. Univ. of Calif. scientists watching Mars thru the great Lick Observatory telescope here, were prepared to start a series of photographs which are expected to aid greatly in the fund of human knowledge of Mars and possibly determine whether that planet is inhabited. The observation will continue till after Aug. 22 when the distance — 34,600,000 miles — between the two planets will be brightest. It is expected that during the ten days of observation hundreds of photographs will be secured, study of which will reveal climatical and geographical conditions. HANGES PLEA TO GUILTY; FINED $300 Wera Seal, arrested recently with Harold C. Berger in a local homing house, and arraigned with him on the charge of possession of liquor, changed her name to guilty this afternoon before Judge Kuchel, and was fined 500. The amazing transformation that can be wrought in the appearance of a girl or a man by styles of dress has been capitalized with telling effect by Thomas H. Ince in this latest dramatic production, "Those Who Dance," a First National release which comes to the California Theatre tomorrow. Blance Sweet, who plays a leading role in the production, is transformed overnight from a simple little country girl into an alluring underworld "queen," and she does it by means of a hair booth and darlingly chic frocks, which work such a startling change in her appearance that she scarcely looks like the same person. The characterization is as powerful as Miss Sweet's "Ann Christie," which has set two continents agog. When a girl from "up State" drops in with the life of New York's underworld to save her brother from the death chair, risking even dishonor to get the evidence which will clear tense situations develop which keep interest at fever point. The change wrought in Miss Sweet's appearance by bobbing her curls and changing her frocks is one of the most interesting screen transformations on record. The frock which she wears in the final scene, when she is trapped with her sweetheart at the annual ball given by the crooks of the underworld, was designed for her by an internationally famous artist, and makes her a striking figure as she fights with her lack to the wall for her life and that of her sweetheart. Warner Baxter, who plays opposite to Miss Sweet in the face production, also lends an illustration of the change worked by clothes and a hair cut in a man's appearance, for he puts over an effective disguise in this way, with no makeup aid except that of a big scar painted on one side of his face. Lambert Hillyer directed the picture. A comedy, "Aggravatin' Papa P and California News Plays," completes a very nice bill. Last times tonight of Colleen Moore in "The Perfect Flapper" and Mack Sennett's "The Half-back of Notre Dame." SEEK OWNERSHIP IN OUTFALL SEWER Application for direct ownership in 6 per cent interest in the joint outfall sewer constructed by Santa Ana, Orange, Anaheim and Fullerton, will be considered by the Santa Ana city council tonight on behalf of La Habra and Buena Park. La Habra seeks 4 per cent interest and Buena Park 2 per cent interest. According to W. G. Knox, city engineer, Santa Ana will approve recommendations of city engineers of the other co-operating cities, granting La Habra 2½ per cent and Buena Park 1½ per cent, for a total of 4 per cent. Both Buena Park and La Habra recently voted bonds for the construction of sewer systems. LOCAL CONTRACTOR INJURED IN FALL A letter from D. J. Pitts, Ohio-st, who has been employed in building a gas station in King City, Calif., relates a narrow escape from serious injury when a scaffold on which he and three others were working broke, allowing them to fall about 8 feet. Mr. Pitts suffered fracture of two ribs and bad bruises. Mr. Pitts will remain in bed for several days, then return home. He had planned a trip to the big trees but his injury may prevent the journey. Mr. Pitts was working with Mrs. Pitts' brother, who is an employe of the Union Oil Co. OILMAN INJURED J. F. Mixer, an oilworker for the Standard Oil Co. at Huntington Beach, was brot to the local sanitarium yesterday suffering from an accident in the oil fields. Mixer sustained a broken jaw. The G.O.P.'s shrewdest move consisted in raising the price of wheat and making the crop abundant.
