DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS

Nor fear approaching night;
Calm comes with evening light,
And hope and peace,—thy duty heed Today
—John Ruskin.
MONEY CANNOT BUY PRECIOUS THINGS
With money one may buy jewels rare or ornaments fair.
With money one may buy mansions, filled with luxuries and surrounded by elegance. With money one may purchase houses and lands until one cannot measure one's possessions. In all things material, money counts. It brings social position and power, of a kind. But—
Money cannot buy all things. There are several essential riches and joys of human relationships which money cannot buy. Money cannot buy happiness, or content, or peace of mind. Money cannot buy pure, sincere, unadulterated love. Money cannot buy respect. Money cannot buy ease of conscience. Mone cannot buy the charm and dignity which true character gives. Money cannot buy health. Money cannot bribe death. And so the catalogue might be prolonged of things that money cannot buy—essential things. Money is good and useful as a means to good ends. But it is baneful as an end, in and of itself.
The "good old times" were no better than present times, if one only has the vision to see the present as it is.
Once Europe gets its reparations problem off its hands, it will be foolloose economically, and there should be rapid economic rehabilitation.
California is increasing rapidly in population. Soon the figures will mount to 5,000,000. Then the second five million will come even more quickly than the first five million.

What Editors Are Saying
FREEDOM MAKES PROGRESS—Berkeley (Cal.) Gazette
The approval of the child labor amendment by the United States Senate, following similar action by the House, is another triumph in the cause of American freedom. Ratification by the necessary number of states may be safely assumed.
There is a tendency among some Americans to talk on if all additions to the basic law of the Nation were necessarily dangerous, and in defiance of the original purpose of the founders. A calm study of the Constitution surely does not uphold that view. It suggests rather, to an open mind, that these amendments are only fulfilling its spirit.
What is the essential spirit underlying the Constitution? Freedom, unquestionably. The very first Congress that assembled under the Constitution proposed ten amendments more specifically guaranteeing civil freedom. The whole train of amendments following the Civil War have been devised, broadly speaking for the same purpose.
The Thirteenth Amendment abolished human slavery in the country.
The Fourteenth Amendment forbade the abridgement of citizenship rights.
The Fifteenth Amendment expressly gave every male citizen the right to vote.
The Sixteenth Amendment gave the people the right to tax wealth directly for national purposes.
The Seventeenth Amendment enabled the people to elect their Senators directly.
The Eighteenth Amendment aimed to free the Nation from the domination of the liquor traffic and its people individually from the slavery of alcohol.
The Nineteenth Amendment enfranchised women.
The Twentieth Amendment will free millions of children under 18 from stunting toll, by empowering the federal government to limit, regulate or prohibit the labor of boys and girls under 18 years of age.
Spencer observed that "While the fear of the living becomes the root of the political control, the fear of the dead becomes the root of the religious control."
SOUND VALUE
Sound products evolve from sound principles. Dodge Brothers Motor Car is the product of an institution whose principles have always been conceded to be pre-eminently sound.
Sound manufacturing methods that place infinitely more importance on quality than on quantity.
Sound financial standing, which permits uninterrupted development and adherence to the policy of constant improvement—
A sound method of selecting dealers, from which an organization has grown that enjoys the complete confidence of the public—
A sound sales and service policy, through which buyers are assured full value for their investment—
These basic principles being sound, it follows as an obvious consequence that Dodge Brothers Motor Car represents sound value.
