Calif. has the most members of any in the Southland in proportion to the total number of owners in the territory, according to J. A. B. Dillworth, district manager. Not only is the present aggregate the largest on record, says Dillworth, but quite considerably bigger than that of Jan. 1, in spite of the fact that the phenomenal peak of prosperity of 1923 is not being enjoyed. The territory is limited by the County Hospital on the State highway, Oranggethorpe-ave, and Los Alamitos. It does not include Placehtia, Brena, etc., which lie in Fullerton's jurisdiction. The patrol service furnished free to members is a feature that is becoming most popular. BUICK SERVICE IN ANAHEIM IS LAUDED The Anaheim garage of the Motor Sales Co., Buick distributors, was declared this week by the service superintendent of the factory on visit here to be the best-equipped of any of its size in So. Calif. This is the feather that was stuck in Bill Goodrum's cap by the visiting official, who checked tools, equipment, parts and supplies generally. His opinion will be embodied in his report to the general superintendent. The official even found tools with which to overhaul the 1925 model. Goodrum feels that Buick owners should realize the quality of the service afforded. The visiting official inspected the garage and made suggestions. FULLERTON GLASS FACTORY OPEN TUES. The poster is signed by Charles D. Hasting, president and general manager of the corporation. It is attracting considerable attention among automobile owners and from other dealers, because it clearly defines the company's future policy relative to the new car and the present Hupmobile as well. Though the new car, an eight-in-line, has been under experimentation and test since November last, it will not be announced nor ready for distribution until January, 1925. "We could bring the new car out sooner," Hastings said, "but our recognized policy is that every major change we make must withstand at least a year's test before being placed on the market. It is only through such precaution that the owner can be safeguarded against performance mistakes that any factory should eliminate before placing an automobile in production." The new eight will be larger and higher-priced than the cars of four cylinders that the company has been manufacturing since inception in 1909. It will not in any way supersede the present car, it is officially stated. Rather, the announcement points out, it is being built for a different market and to round out the company's line. Officials expect the present Hupmobile to continue to constitute the bulk of the company's sales. Probes Other States' Tests for Auto Drivers Believing that motor vehicles may be made safer for pedestrian and driver alike by prohibiting incompetent persons from handling cars, the Auto Club of So. Cal. is investigating systems of examinations for drivers in other states, with the view of determining the best method of reducing casualties. In one eastern state the fatal automobile accidents in 1924 were less than they were in 1919, in spite of the enormous increase in the number of vehicles in use during that period. It was found that from 20 to 30 per cent of those applying for the privilege of operating a motor vehicle on the highways were unable to demonstrate their fitness to be allowed this privilege. This withholding of licenses to drive from incompetents is held as one of the chief causes for the marked reduction in this eastern state in deaths attributable to automobile crashes. The situation in California today, it is pointed out, is that any person, irrespective of mental and physical qualifications may obtain a license to operate a car. As far as the law is concerned, the applicant may be an inmate of a home for the feeble minded, but if he can fill in the little card furnished by the Motor Vehicle Department, on which the color of the hair, eyes, and a few inconsequential details are listed, a license is granted. It has been demonstrated that the chief cause of motor vehicle fatalities throughout the United States is incompetent handling of cars, so that it would appear that if incompetent drivers can be wounded out, an appreciable reduction in the number of motor vehicle accidents will result. As a further argument for the examination of motorists, it is shown that there are many foreigners and illiterates, unable to read or understand English. This makes it impossible for them to interpret the warning signs which have been so generously distributed by the Automobile Club of So. Cal. to call attention to dangerous spots on the highways, or for them to read even the most simple provisions of the state law covering the operation of the motor vehicle on the highway. This condition alone, is a prolific cause of many violations of the traffic regulations. Other organizations are expected to join the automobile club in finding ways and means of remedying the costly situation created by incompetent drivers. Zahl, Anaheim, Type-A sedan; S.W.
