SHORTRIDGE WILL SUPPORT HARBOR "It will be my pleasure, and I shall make it my duty, to use every effort to interest the government in the problems of Orange-co. harbor. I appreciate the very valuable opportunity there is in Newport Bay and it is pleasing to note the progress already taken and to learn of the future plans of the people of Orange County for further extensive development which I hope will go forward thoroughly and rapidly." After taking a trip over Newport Bay, Senator Samuel M. Shortridge made the above statement to a representative group of Orange-co. citizens at Newport Beach Wednesday. The senator has always been a friend to the harbor project and with others attended the hearing before the board of army engineers last December in Washington. At that hearing Senator Shortridge made an earnest plea for government recognition. The visit of Senator Shortridge to Newport Beach was to renew his acquaintance with the Bay, and the improvement plans projected, as well as to discuss with harbor enthusiasts the more recent steps taken. Senator Shortridge was the guest of honor at a luncheon at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. No formal talks were made, the affair being a round table discussion of harbor topics. Judge Coburn, chairman of the Committee of Fifty invited the Senator to attend the meeting which is to be held at Orange Union High School on Thursday evening at 7:30 but another important engagement made previously will prevent the Senator WEST COAST —WEST COAST, Aug. 14. CITY TO CODIFY 456 ORDINANCES Authority to start the work of codifying the city's 456 ordinances, eliminating those super-seded, and segregating those that are inactive, but still on the books, will be given tonight by city council, City Attorney William P. Webb, Jr., said today. The council hasn't formally acted but individual members have declared themselves in favor of the move. Ordinances authorizing street improvements, etc., are inactive, but not "dead". That is, they apply still, for example, in cases involving property rights. But they are so seldom used or referred to that they must be segregated from the others. Ordinances superseded include the former anti-liquor laws. Webb will group the live ordinances together, codify them, and have them published, if the city council approves.
