LA FOLLETTE SECRET ORDERS (By H. K. Reynolds) (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON, Aug. 8—Senator Robert M. LaFollette, independent candidate for the presidency, announced today that he was opposed to the Ku Klux Klan. The announcement was made in a letter to Robert P. Scripps of New York City, who has inquired as to La Follette's attitude. "Anyone familiar with my record, especially in my own state, knows that I have always stood without reservation against any discrimination between races, classes and creeds," La Follette said. "I hold that every citizen is entitled to the full exercise of his constitutional rights." "I am unalterably opposed to the evident purposes and secret organization known as the Ku Klux Klan as disclosed by its public acts. It cannot long survive." LaFollette said that in his opinion the Ku Klux Klan was "foredoomed" because it has within its own body the "seeds of death." Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson were quoted by La Follette in support of his stand against the klan. He inserted in his letter an excerpt from a letter written by Lincoln at Springfield, Ill., on Aug. 24, 1855, in which Lincoln declared he would prefer to move to Russia, "where despotism can be taken pure and without the base alloy of hypocrisy." If the "Know-nothing" party came into power. "When the Knownothings get control," La Follette quoted Lincoln as saying, "it (referring to the constitution) will read 'All men are created equal except negroes and foreigners and Catholics.'" The statement of Jefferson, born in 1803, was that he would "bow to the shrine of intolerance or admit a right of inquiry into the religious opinions of others." Drumm of the superior court ruled that the couple must remain married, each will have the custody of one child and each must train that child to respect the other parent. SANTA ANA, Aug. 8.—Because of the climate Charles A. "I know what we can do. We go to the orchard and get long ladder they are using to pick the cherries, and we'll put it against the tree and then clench up after them." "All right. Let's do!" agreed Nellie. Away ran the girls to the chard and in about ten minutes the cats saw them tugging away at a long ladder. At last they reached the tree and after many mishaps succeeded in standing up against the trunk. But wwas their disappointment to find that it only reached half way toward the tall tree and came nowhere near the limb on which the cat sat. "I have it!" cried Nellie. "Let me hose and turn it on. Says Strong, Silent Men Often Dumb LONDON, Aug. 8.—These socalled "strong, silent" men may be silent, but they are not necessarily strong, according to Winston Churchill. It may be they are silent only because they are dumb. "Too often," said Churchill, in an address before a class of college graduates, "the strong, silent man is silent only because he does not know what to say, and he is reputed strong because he has remained silent." Chureh urged the collegians to develop a real "gift of gab"—that is, to have something to say and learn how to say it.
