MONDAY, JULY 28, 1924 CURE SEASICKNESS BY DRY LAND BOAT PARIS, July 26.—Seasickness hospitals will soon be opened in French ports if experiments now being carried out by the French Society of Psychotherapie prove successful. With the permission of French steamship lines, leading Paris specialists have been crossing the ocean, studying cases of mal de mer at first hand. "Seasickness results in a state of inhibition which causes the patient to lose interest in everything," declares the resport to the medical society. "He or she becomes indifferent to the point of forgetting the elementary rules of modesty." "Seasickness is usually the result of lack of self control. Consequently the cure requires the reduction and strengthening of the will under conditions similar to the movement of a boat." Dr. Berillion has invented a rocking machine which gives the patient all the sensations from calm sea through slight swell, rough weather and gale to tempest. He places the patient in the substitute boat, and then either through suggestion or actual hypnosis strengthens resistance and self control. Two treatments are claimed to be sufficient for the ordinary bad sailor. French boat lines are keenly following the development of the invention, and it is proposed to give free seasick treatment to all who request them and present first or second-class steamship tickets. BOYS AT ROKILI FINISH PLUNGE Camp Ro.ki-lil's praises are sung by E.W.Hedges today following his return from a week-end at the Boy Scout summer place in the San Bernardino, where he visited his son, Norman. The boys had just completed digging a plunge, and this week will start cementing it They had their shower baths already but will find more fun swimming, their friends say. The camp is 6700 feet high located at Barton's Flats off the Harvey control of Mill Creek canyon Sixty boys are there all from Orange County, including a good many Anaheemers. The boys rise at 6:00 o'clock take a shower or not—according to whether they feel equal to the ice temperature of the water at that hour—breakfast, clean up, etc Sometimes e squad will go off and spend the night by themselves higher in the mountains, in charge of a leader. Gathering of leaf mold, which can be sold here at 50 cents per bag, is one of the useful tasks done aside from the necessary jobs. In Hedges' opinion the camp is doing a good work, not only in helping to make the lads sturder, but in increasing their dependence upon themselves. UNHURT WHEN CAR SLIPS OVER CLIFF MONEREY, July 28.-Alone in an auto which slipped over a cliff, turned over three times, and landed in the canyon below amid jagged rocks, the 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.U.L Holmes of San Jose escaped uninjured. Henry Cabot Lodge, of Mass., one of the best known men in American public life, is in serious condition today at the Charles Gates hospital following an emergency operation for bladder trouble. At 9 a.m. Dr. Cunningham, who performed the operation, announced: "Nothing more can be told for another 24 or 48 hours. He is in a serious condition." Later in the forenoon, attending physicians were quite optimistic. Lodge ate a good breakfast which he followed with a cigar. Physicians said they expected to operate again in about two weeks. Dr. Cunningham issued a bulletin this morning saying Senator Lodge spent a comfortable night. His pulse and temperature were nearly normal, according to physicians. Senator Lodge was reported resting as easily as could be expected during the morning. It will be probably 12 hours before attending physicians can decide definitely whether the Senator can recover. Since his return from Wash-ington a fortnight ago, Senator Lodge has been in precarious health, and has been under the care of Dr. Frederick Winslow, of Boston. He suffered a relapse Sunday and Dr. Cunningham was called in. The senator was in great pain and cheerfully consented to immediate removal to the hospital, a private institution. After recovering from the anesthetic, Senator Lodge appeared cheerful. A bulletin issued by physicians seald the senator's condition was attractive.
