STATE IS PREPARING
RESORTS ALL OPEN AS USUAL
No Fires in San Bernardino Mts; C. of C. Head Nails Lie
The San Bernardino mountain resorts are all open as usual, untouched by the fires which have prevailed in certain sections of the state. All highways also are open, including the rim of the world highway, Pinecrest, Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear Valley, Forest Home, Mill Creek, City Creek and Waterman roads.
This is the burden of a statement issued by H. C. McAllister, president of the San Bernardino C. of C. in response to false published reports.
The statement follows:
INVESTMENT IN AUTOS MOUNTS
Increase As Great As That in Houses, Say Authorities
Automobiles have come to be regarded as quite as important in the minds of the people as new homes and building and loan stock, according to tabulations just received by the Auto Club of So. Calif.
These are compiled on a national basis and are from the residence building files by the F. W. Dodge Co. and the motor vehicle production by the National Automobile C. of C. The comparisons show that the curves of increase in both types of investment are virtually parallel for the past

This is the burden of a statement issued by H. C. McAllister, president of the San Bernardino C. of C. in response to false published reports.
The statement follows:
"The impression that the San Bernardino mountains are closed to visitors is entirely incorrect. The mountains, which form the principal outdoor playground of Southern California, are open, visitors are welcome and thousands of people are spending their vacations at the several hundred resorts."
"The co-operation the forestry department is giving is adding to the protection of the mountains. Many additional rangers have been placed in service and the county also has contributed guards. As one of the commendable features of this year's service, the rangers are greeting motorists as they enter the reserve by all roads, informing them of the regulations and requesting co-operation in the prevention of fire. As never before the visitors are impressed with the fact that they are under the protection of the United States government when they enter the reserve. All automobiles are required to stop at the entrances to the reserve and after a courteous greeting and statement of the government's rules they are then passed into the reserve. It is not necessary to secure permits at any point. Several remote canyons not used by the public have been closed, but this does not affect in any way any portion of the forest through which the highways run or where are located the resorts."
"The entire action by the government is designed to protect automobiles have come to be regarded as quite as important in the minds of the people as new homes and building and loan stock, according to tabulations just received by the Auto Club of So. Calif.
These are compiled on a national basis and are from the residence building files by the F. W. Dodge Co. and the motor vehicle production by the National Automobile C. of C. The comparisons show that the curves of increase in both types of investment are virtually parallel for the past three years. It is found further that the increase in building and loan association assets climbed from less than two billion dollars in 1919 to more than three billion in 1923, and the figures for motor vehicle sales in the same period were very similar.
Bringing these, figures to the state of California alone, where the increase of automobile in 1922 was 28.8 per cent, it means that new homes were increased in this ratio, as also were building and loan investments.
Hard-headed statisticians are pointing out these facts as proving conclusively that the automobile is no longer a luxury, but is regarded in the same class as new homes and building and loan securities.
Action may be expected soon on the request of Ralph DePalma for reinstatement in the ranks of the American Automobile Ass'n, according to Val Haresnape, Los Angeles representative.
not only the mountains but the interests and comfort of the tourists.
"There have been no fires in the San Bernardino mountains and the fire patrol has been increased to such an extent there is little likelihood that there will be a serious blaze. The situation is such in the San Bernardino mountains that there is no danger to any one by fire. No one ever has been injured there by fire."

Cigar Lighter, Ash Receiver Help Quell Woods' Red Demon
A dry year in the country means many forest fires despite the unusual amount of care exercised by the public to help prevent them. The forest service department has issued warning upon warning to stamp out the red outlaw that threatens to destroy nature's playgrounds in the hills.
It isn't always the fault of the earless camper who leaves his fire smouldering when he breaks camp as forest fires are often started by the careless smoker who hurls the stub of a cigarette or cigar into the brush along the roadside as he motors along.
This practice has grown to such an extent that a number of officials have suggested the passing of laws that will require every car to be equipped with an ash receiver and will impose drastic punishment upon the smoker who does not use it.
An ash receiver of merit will meet with the approval of car owner and forest ranger alike. One model of a receiver on the market not only acts as a receptacle for ashes but is also equipped with a hooded cover that prevents the ashes from blowing about. A small drawer below the receiver conceals matches and cigarettes. Another type holds cigarettes that are released with the pressing of a button and is lighted with the pressure of another button.
Every car should be equipped with some type of a receiver and lighter, regardless of the make, not only from the convenience standpoint but as a measure of safety.
BE A GOOD WOODMAN
Do not pollute the water of lakes or streams.
Bury or burn all rubbage or refuse promptly, even tin cans. Live up to your fish and game laws.
Think of the fellow who will come to camp in the same spot that you leave.
Leave a clean camp and a clean record. Show that a good woodsman camped there.
CONSTANTLY IMPROVED
BUT NO YEARLY MODELS
There are obvious benefits to the purchaser in Dodge Brothers policy of making constant, gradual refinements in their product instead of changing from one design to another year after year.
Chief among these is the fact that the car may be operated throughout the full limit of its usefulness without the extra depreciation loss which results from a rapid succession of radically different methods.

Event Comes on Anniversary of First Demonstration of Auto
Fixing more securely its place as leader among motoring organizations of the world, the Auto Club of So. Calif. has just announced that it has passed the 100,000 mark in membership. A significant fact of this enormous growth is emphasized by the statement that the club yesterday had a membership equal to the entire population of Los Angeles in 1909, the year the club was organized.

BUICK IS THIRD IN CAL. REGISTRATION
Nearly one-third of all the passenger cars registered in California on July 1 were Fords, according to the State Division of Motor Vehicles, which recently made public a report on the subject.
That is, out of 1,014,578 the Ford was credited with 321,427.
The Chevrolet was second with 108,872, the Buick third with 91,667, the Dodge fourth with 77,227, the Studebaker fifth with 56,692 and the Overland sixth with 41,070.
These are California-owned cars only, and do not include cars of visiting tourists, etc. Trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles also are excluded.
The estimate is based, not on actual count of the more than 1,000,000 cars, which would be an impractical task, but upon a formula obtained by checking representative parts of the files. The formula was proved to be sound.
Fixing more securely its place as leader among motoring organizations of the world, the Auto Club of So. Calif. has just announced that it has passed the 100,000 mark in membership. A significant fact of this enormous growth is emphasized by the statement that the club yesterday had a membership equal to the entire population of Los Angeles in 1900, the year the club was organized, or 162,479.
No ceremonies marked the rounding out of the six figure membership, although it brought a thrill of gratification to the officers, directors, and employees who have so successfully guided the destinies of the huge organization and made its emblem a universal sign of service to the motorist.
Oddly enough, the 100,000th milestone in the history of the organization came on the 30th anniversary of the first successful demonstration of the so-called "horseleas carriage." Six years afterward, when the automobile was yet considered in the class of the toys and luxuries, the Auto Club of So. Calif. was incorporated with 56 members. After nearly 24 years of its existence it (Continued on Page Two)
Grand Ave. Starts
Advertising by the State for bids on the preliminary improvement of the section of the coast highway from Laguna Beach to Newport Beach is expected soon, according to the office of the County Superintendent of Highways. At present there is no way except the private thoroughfare of the Irvine ranch, a rough dirt road.
The other section to be improved is the one in the other direction from Laguna Beach to Serra. No work has been done by the State as yet, but a quantity of private development has been undertaken at Dana Point, where streets have been laid out. It is understood that the gravel base only will first be put in along both stretches of road. The coast highway will be within quarter of a mile of the beach through its course.
Work started this week on the widening of Grand-ve-third Tuena Park for more than a mile. The widening will be from 28 to 84 feet.
The county still is busy putting in gravel shoulders along Lincoln ave from Anaheim to Grand-ave. The improvement is expected to do (Continued on Page Two)
