Market Reports
NEW YORK, July 23.—Stocks maintained a strong upward tendency throughout the greater part of today's session in the stock market, and trading was again in large volume.
The railroad group was featured by the activity of the so-called Van Sweringen group, including, in addition to Chesapeake & Ohio, the Nickel Plate, Erie and Pore Marquette. Both of these stocks sold up to new high prices today as rumors filled the speculative district that negotiations to combine them with the other roads controlled by the young Cleveland capitalist were nearing completion. Illinois Central hung up a new high record at 111.4%.
Violent upswings in the cotton market carrying prices about $6 a bale higher, and a strong and active grain market, with prices up 5 to 5c on wheat and corn, especially favrable forecasts of industrial and business conditions now; another advance in the price of copper metal and a broadening demand for iron and steel as notched by the Iron Age, were some of the more important features bearing directly on the stock market today.
The steels were retarded in the early trading by the Federal Trade Commission's adverse decision on the Pittsburgh-plus system of price fixing and never quite recovered from that setback.
Reactionary movements on profit taking accounted for depressions in different parts of the list throughout the day.
Advices in bonds of the railroad companies which made such good records in the stock market took place in the listed bond market, where trading in second grade railroads was very brisk. Wilson & Co. bonds were strong. Liberty bonds were active and prices slightly higher. Money was in good supply and discount rates unchanged. The posted rate for call loans was 2 per cent but loans were made in the outside market at 1½ per cent.
Stock sales today 1,316,000 shares; bonds, $19,249,000.
BROADER GRAIN MARKET
CHICAGO, July 23.—There was a broader market for all grains today. An erratic tone later was followed by firmness and much higher prices.
Wheat closed 6% to 7¼c higher; corn, 2¼c to 4c higher and outs 1¾ to 2¾c higher.
