The rising tide of murder other crimes of violence in United States challenges bench and bar to close the holes through which criminal cudge or delay justice, Casper Yost, told delegates to the American Bar Association recent Yost is editor of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and President the American Society of New Paper Editors. "Approximately 10,000 murders were committed in this country last year, fifty times as many in the United Kingdom, while in such cities as New York, Chicago and St. Louis more crime of violence are committed annually than in the whole of Europe. And this disgraceful condition is not due to a greater degree of criminality, but to comparative immunity from punishment or correction that criminal enjoys in this country." "The instruments of justice and of law enforcement throughout America are manacled by preposterous system of criminal jurisdiction that gives crime every advantage over justice, and creates the disgraceful paradox that law often cannot be enforced because the law will not permit its enforcement. Crime disgracefully prevalent in America because the administration justice is not sound, because, fact, it not only permits, but courages crime." Harry D. Crime is disgracefully prevalent in America because the administration of justice is not sound, because, fact, it not only permits, but also courages crime." Yost's summary of a situation for which the Bar Association itself is seeking a remedy was built around the topic, "Co-operation of the Press with the Bar in the Administration of Justice." In discussing the co-operation of the press Yost said: "In the main the press of this country directed by men of conscience who realize their responsibilities to the public, and who are deeply concerned in the sound administration of justice as are the most public-spirited members of the bar. "The newspaper so conducts seeks accuracy above all things in its reports. There are difficult ties that we all recognize and seek to overcome. The human element, the human limitation are constant obstacles to the statement or ascertainment of truth, in the press as well as in the courts, and neither in the press nor in the courts is the whole truth and nothing but the truth ever attained." As remedies to fight the war of crime, Yost urged a searchin examination by the bar of what needs to be done to establish the administration of justice on sound basis and then to arrange the forces of public opinion to support concrete and uniform state and national programs.
