BIG PERFORMERS NOT MOST ABLE
LOS ANGELES, July 22—Eastern and middle-western sports writers who are boosting one Billy Britton for high pugilistic honors, because he defeated a certain Billy Conley of Spokane, Wash., are off on the wrong foot.
Conley was imported to the east from Spokane and heralded as a great potential champion with a brilliant record of past performances.
He was billboarded as a boy with two great mites, each one carrying a sleep potion. His feet did shame to Pavlowa and he had great vim and vigor at all times—so was told to the gullible easterners.
As a matter of fact Conley is more rather than less of the ham and variety of pugilist.
He has never licked anyone of note and has been defeated by some ordinary chaps.
Bert Collins of those parts, Ray Pelkey of Oakland or Jack Reeves of San Francisco would have no trouble with Conley or neither would Billy Wells, the English welterweight.
For some reason there are few good legitimate welters of 147 pounds, middleweights and light-heavy and heavyweight boxers on the Pacific coast or in the northwest.
They grow 'em big in the west but few of them are ring performers of any ability.
Dave Shade, California welter, is one western product with considerable class. Shade has fought the best in the country and is now preparing for a final drive in an effort to cop the welter title from Mickey Walker.
INSANITY CURED BY LIGHT WORK
ALBANY, N. Y., July 22—Doses of work and light exercise is the "medicine" which is being used to cure thousands of insane people in this state, according to Dr. O. Flyod Haviland, head of the State Hospital Commission. According to Dr. Haviland, this plan of treating insane and mentally weak patients has emerged from the experimental stage and is a complete success.
Adult patients with minds like children have been so greatly improved by being fed work and exercises, instead of drugs and medicine, that their parole is possible. Others, whose disorders are incurable, are brought to a condition where it is much easier for attendants to care for them.
The system under which this is accomplished is known as mental therapy, and New York state was the first to adopt it in its institutions for the insane.
NEED ONE FINGER MARK FOR IDENTITY
LONDON, July 22—A new terror to the criminal fraternity has arisen with the discovery of a fingerprint system which will make it possible for a criminal to be identified by one fingerprint only, as against ten now required.
The new system is the discovery of C. S. Collins, head of the fingerprint department of Scotland Yard, internationally known British police headquarters.
SOCIETY GIRL LIKES HER JOB
NEW YORK, July 22—Elizabeth Merchant, a society girl, has set the social world a-gaping by working as a saleswoman for $20 a week. Miss Merchant said recently that she liked the work, and the hardest job she knew of doing.

Connecticut Spends 46 Millions for Highways
HARTFORD, Conn., July 22. Connecticut spent 46 million dollars building new highways in the last 28 years—the bulk of it in the last five years—and now has 1114 miles of real roads, according to John A. MacDonald, state highway commissioner. More than five million dollars was spent in the last year, with overhead expenses less than a quarter million. State officials intend to go ahead with the work until all Connecticut roads are fit for motoring.

SOCIETY GIRL LIKES HER JOB
NEW YORK, July 22.—Elizabeth Merchant, a society girl, has set the social world a gaping by working as a saleswoman for $20 a week. Miss Merchant said recently that she liked the work, and the hardest job she knew of was doing nothing.
The girl who sang a paean for work and who works when she doesn't have to, was duly educated and "finished" at an exclusive school. Her job until recently was marshalling her many admirers going to tea and ordering pretty dresses. She said that the duties of a debutante were infinitely more trying than those of selling olina and Venetian candlesticks.
"Earning a living should be just as compulsory for girls as the 8-year military service is for young men in Europe," Miss Merchant said. "Nothing, not even travel, teaches you as much as earning. You learn the value of money."

Two months ago Frazier had a near-disastrous fight on the streets here. A knife was produced by his opponent, who inflicted a two-inch gash in Frazier's heart. He was rushed to a hospital in what physicians that was a dying condition. As a last-minute effort physicians operated on him and used several stitches in sewing up the wound.
After the stitching was completed, and the wound covered, Frazier developed pneumonia and for days it was thought he would die.
When subjected to an examination before the South Carolina Medical society here recently experts declared he apparently is "no sound no over."
