SMALL CROWD AT WATER MEETING
It must be that everyone in the thriving community of Cypress is interested in water, but judging from the attendance at the C. of G. meeting there last night, when the proposed water system installation was discussed, the faithful few are not so sure. As of the dozen present, several were the speakers and out-of-town visitors.
E. J. Whitney, president of the Consolidated Water Development Co. and of the American bank at Redondo, made the main speech. He believes Cypress has the ideal location for a busy town, rather than the thriving rural community as it now is, and its greatest need is an adoquate water system. Mr. Whitney told of the rapid development of Hawthorn, Montrose and several other places which had their first actual growth after the water systems were installed. Realizing the necessity of co-operation of the district, a petition will be presented to ascertain the general feeling for the step with a decision in two weeks.
Harry L. Persons also a representative of the water company, said from a casual preliminary survey it would be necessary to install 17 miles of pipe which means about 10,000 feet of mains, with all necessary connections and fire plugs for fire protection. The approximate cost of bringing water to the consumer is set at $100,000 to serve the mile square. This pincer the average cost at $150, and five years will be given for payment when the system will be turned over to the city.
G. G. Priddy, introduced as the "man with the most kick," made a short talk. He reminded the citizens of the present low water level of the wells new supplying the water for Cypress and gave his hearers something to think about.
Those from Los Angeles accompanying the speakers included Harry Bonham, Miss Bonham, Charles Quizley, Charles Bunning, D. D. Boswell. As usual attendance at Cypress C. of C meet-
Consummation of an idea which has been fostered in Sao Paulo for some time that the state should declare its independence from the federal government at Rio de Janeiro and become Brazil's capital, is believed to be the cause of the rebellion which has broken out in the largest of the South American republics. The revolt is centered in Sao Paulo, a city of 597,000, and the chief trade center of the world's richest coffee trade area, containing almost 8,000,000 people. It is situated immediately southeast of Rio de Janeiro and in from the seacoast (see map above), having as its scapegoat Santos, through which coffee passed from the hinterland.
The Museum of Ipgrand (left), in Sao Paulo, marks this site of the declaration of freedom from Portuguese rule, which was followed by the establishment of the empire. This turn became the present republic. The uprising has already co-created hundreds lives and many property damage. The Brasilia battleship Minas Geraes (center) is at Santos to aid in the bombardment of the city, and to preside, Dr. Arthur Bernard (above), is preparing to win martial law throughout Brazil.

HARD HIT BY QUAKE
TOKYO, July 15—Not the least of those who worry over the repeated shakings of the earth in Japan are dealers in glassware and curio dealers in Japan. Undaunted by the first great quake on September 1, 1923, those who supply the foreign tourist with expensive, but breakable curios, and those who supply the Japanese people with all sorts of glassware made arrangements to reopen their shops, and were just beginning to catch up on their business when the January 15 shake came. At that time, it is estimated, the glassware dealers and those who sell curious among the hardest hit, as their stocks were most easily damaged by the very strong earthquake.
"Scientists promised us, after the first shock in September, that Japan would be free of such things for many years to come," one local glassware dealer told a newspaperman recently. "Working on this assurance, glassware dealers in Tokyo ordered big stocks from Tokyo only to have destroyed a few weeks after they had been put in place. Now we feel that under the circumstances we must raise the price of our wares considerably if we are to have any sort of protection in the future."

NOTED SPECIALIST
NOTED SPECIALIST TALKS TO SMOKERS
GINGINNATI Ohio, July 15—If you are smoking 20 or more cigarettes a day—
Or 10 or 12 cigars—
Beware!
Carcinoma of the stomach will get you, if you don't watch out!
There is more carcinoma (cancer) of the stomach among men than women, remarked Dr. Joseph L. DeCourcy, Cincinnati specialist.
This statement, he said, was proved by statistics compiled by leading physicians and surgeons in Europe and America.
"The reason for this," he announced, "is that the men frequently use nicotine to excess. Once in a great while, we hear of a woman who does likewise, but, so far, the vast majority of the ladies are just playing around with cigarettes, trying to acquire a taste, so to speak, like a man eating olives. They are in no immediate danger from this form of cancer."
"Smoking and chewing tobacco, in moderation, will not hurt anyone," continued Dr. DeCourcy.
"But when a fellow burns up a pack of cigarettes every day and another reduces about a dozen cigarss to 'butts'—watch out! The time is coming when he will be on his back in a hospital."
