STUDEBAKER WINS
BIG ECONOMY RUN
Two first prizes, one for the economy and the other for endurance, were won by standard stock Studebaker cars in the economy and endurance run staged by the El Paso Herald.
The Studebaker Light Six, competing against four other well-known makes of cars, covered the 1852-mile route across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, which included paved roads, desert wastes and rough mountain trails. In the prescribed 12 days, using but 95 gallons of gasoline and six quarts of oil.
This is an average of 19.8 miles per gallon of gas and 313.65 miles per quart of oil.
The special six carried away the honors for endurance against a field of other well known cars. The only two points scored against it were those assessed because of the driver, who was unfamiliar with all the rules, purposefully shut off his motor in a traffic jam. Otherwise, it had a clean score.
First prize for economy, won by the light six, was a large, hand-some plaque, while the endurance trophy was a beautiful silver loving cup. Both trophies were suitably inscribed.
The entire course was covered by officials, press representatives and "checkers." All drivers were required to check their cars in and out at pre-determined "control points," each morning, noon and night. Strict A. A. A. rules governed the contest and penalties were assessed for all violations.
These two new records follow close on the heels of numerous equally impressive road victories for stock Studebaker cars in Florida, California, Pennsylvania, South Africa, the Syrian Desert and Australia.
The wide interest aroused by this economy and endurance run influenced the sponsors to establish it as an annual event. Next year it will probably attract

Better Business Already Is Trend
Business conditions throut out the country are on the upward trend is the conclusion reached by Reeve Gartzmann, president of the California Oakland Motor Co. Gartzmann has just returned from an extended trip and made a careful survey of the various markets, including the motor car field while there, which he conveys to Harry L. Turton, Oakland dealer in Anaheim, as follows:
"The slump is over nationally. The present financial system permits of a more rapid recovery than in former years, says Gartzmann." While the first six months of 1924 showed a slowing up in the production of motor cars, the big factories are again hitting a fast pace, and particularly the Oakland Motor Car Co. While in Pontiac, I learned that more Oaklands have been turned out and sold during the first six months of 1924 than in the last six months of 1923 and many times more than in the first six months of 1923.

29 MILES PLUS ON DESERT TRIP
This isn't a whopper, but a story to the facts of which Coleman Jordan of Huntington Beach will make affidavit, according to H. R. Grove of the H. R. Grove Motor Co., Hudson and Essex distributors.
Jordan drove an Essex coach 1198 miles, of which 200 were thru the desert and a large part of the rest thru the San Bernardino mountains and used only 40 gallons of gasoline. The trip was from San Bernardino to Ransburg to the Mohave desert, to Mint canyon, over the Ridge route, Bakersfield, Modesto and the coast range.
Those who do not avail themselves of the periodic physical examination always register surprise when told that blood pressure is high or that some heart or kidney disease is well advanced.
MERELY GETTING BACK TO NORMAL
An instance of the way in which So. Calif.'s return to a normal condition has been exaggerated into appearing to be a bad business depression has been made public by the So. Pasadena C. of C.A. Decatur, Ill., man wrote the later body, asking whether there was a slump in So. Calif.; whether building had stopped in Los Angeles, So. Pasadena, Alhambra and Pasadena, as reported in eastern papers; whether as reported thousands of homes were for sale and people going back East by the tainload.
M. Beehtold, secretary of the So. Pasadena C. of C. in his answer told the inquirer that his lot in St. Pasadena, was worth $2750 on Jan. 1 and should bring $3000 now. An oversupply of labor had resulted in a certain proportion of building trades mechanics returning home. Building permits showed that activity had not much diminished.
