UNION OF METHODISTS PROGRESSING It is significant of the advancement of harmonious feeling among religious denominations that the Methodist Episcopal church, South, has voted overwhelmingly, through its general conference, to accept the plan of union with the Methodist Episcopal church, which movement, when fully consummated, will wipe out the schism which dates back to and before the Civil War. There are other steps to be taken before the organic reuniting of the two great bodies of Methodism in America is complete. But the success of the plan of unification seems to be assured. Viewing the religion of the Christ broadly, it is realized that tolerance and harmony are cardinal virtues. It is a good omen, therefore, when two great organizations of Methodists, each numbering a large membership, voluntarily plan and vote to come together as one body. It is shown that this union will reduce overhead expenses greatly and simplify the work of the Methodist denomination. But far above and beyond any material consideration, is the spiritual impetus that this healing of a breach of other days should give. The dwelling together, in unity, of religious brethren, is theoretically extolled as one of the beautiful and blessed states of spiritual growth and fervor. Surely, this blending of Methodists long dissevered, should prove of great spiritual value in the realm of religion. Not much can be expected of the future if the rising generation is not morally sound. An alarming wave of immorality is said to exist among high school boys and girls the country over, and there are those who declare it is this contaminated wave sweeping out into the seas of life that is responsible for the present nationwide condition. If so, the condition should be traced to its source, a heavy hand, laid on the roots and the vicious thing eradicated immediately and utterly? But where lies the source? Is it the school or the home? Gazette A Pittsburgh business man is fighting the annoying "chain letter" with statistics and publicity. When he received such a communication with its promise of good luck if sent on to nine more persons within 24 hours, and its threat of bad luck if neglected, he very promptly decided to risk the bad luck. Then he did a little mathematical exercise and estimated that if every recipient took the "chain letter seriously, the eighth round-would mean well over 4,000,000 letters dumped into the mail, costing over $95,000 in postage and a vast amount of labor. Many an individual who would resent being called superstitious falls for the chain letter through fear. Fortunately not every recipient of a chain letter experiences this weakness. A good many realize that the letter is a waste of time and money, an encumbrance to postal facilities, a stupid appeal to false sentiment or superstition, and a thoroughly useless thing. Through the official publication of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, the business man referred to challenges his fellow-citizens to check the pernicious chain letter. Is it not the greatest power for genuine national unity? It will be in many other countries soon. Eventually it may be more than that, crossing frontiers and becoming a force for intelligent internationalism, which is the patriotism of mankind in general, enabling nationalities and races in Europe and Asia to hear and understand each other as they do here. SCIENCE AND LOVE—San Diego Union We note with approval another step in the process of placing the constitution of love upon a scientific basis. Dr. Gustave Lohee, the famous German perfume manufacturer whom we never heard of before and never expect to hear of again, asserts that the way to a man's heart—romantically speaking—is not through the stomach, as formerly, but through the nose. This is probably an important contribution, though we do not claim to be an authority on the subject. If Gus is right, we no longer need reckon with "love at first sight." It will be "love at first smell." Speculation upon the way of a man with a maid—or a maid with a man, more accurately—is of course very ancient. Though science has made some headway with the other matters that puzzled the ancient philosopher, it seems that romantic love is just about as much of a mystery now-a-days as it has ever been. Dr. Gus reveals that a man's nerves may betray him into falling in love. This is probably correct, but it simply adds more data to a mass that is already voluminous and untabulated. The sight of a pretty face, or a comely figure; the touch of a soft hand; the sound of a pleasant voice; the appeal of a witty remark; the enjoyment of a good meal; the whirl of the rhythmic dance; the scent of a seductive perfume—all these, and any one of them, can imperil a man's peace of mind by inducing love. The list is almost endless, too. A slap in the face, a dousing in cold water, even a gunshot wound, have been known to cause the same effect. Perhaps it would be simpler if science would catalogue the causes that positively never lead to love.
