ROBINSON CLIMBS ON FIRST TODAY (Continued from Page One) The Oklahoma vote of twenty for Senator Robinson was challenged on the 50th ballot and a poll demanded. The Oklahoma poll showed ten for Robinson and nine for Ralston, with one absent. Under the unit rule the entire twenty was ordered cast for Robinson. McAdoo at noon indicated that he had no intention of giving up the tight. He sent a letter to the leader of each state delegation supporting him, saying among other things: "It is not reasonable to expect the progressive forces which so largely control this convention to capitulate to the minority. This would not be democratic. We can win this fight if the progressive lines hold firm." The 47th ballot, which made Democratic convention history—still brought no clarification in the situation and no break in the lines of the leaders. McAdoo at 484.0; Smith 320.1; with all the favorite sons hanging on grimly. MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, NEW YORK, July 3.—Through four more ballots, the Democratic national convention continued in Ralston today in its effort to select a presidential nominee. William G. McAdoo was unable to hold his strength above the 509 mark, reached last night, and he slipped back during the first four ballots today to around 484 votes, where he lingered. Oklahoma left his standard again and went to Senator Joe Robinson of Arkansas, whose managers were busy on the floor setting the stage to give the Arkansas senator a run. Governor Smith's managers sat tight and kept his strength around what it has been for the last score of ballots—around 320. Senator Swanson, manager for Senator Glass of Virginia, denied convention reassembled in Madison Square Garden this morning, their efforts to unite on a man who can command two thirds of their number. McAdoo dropped below 500 on the first ballot of today's session, due largely to the defection of Oklahoma whose 20 votes were transferred to Senator Robinson of Arkansas. As the balloting proceeded the expectation for a "break" became more and more general during the day. Forty-two ballots were behind them and another weary day ahead, making it virtually certain that the 44 ballots in San Francisco in 1920 and the 46 required for Wilson's nomination at Baltimore in 1912 would be outstripped by this turbulent gathering. Leaders of the rival factions came to the garden fresh from a series of conferences, the most significant of which was held in the Waldorf just before 10 a.m. and was participated in by George E. Brennan of Illinois, Joseph M. Guffey of Pennsylvania, Norman Mack of New York and Tom Taggart of Indiana. Reports were current that after McAdoo has had an opportunity to show something for a few more ballots and Smith has had his run, Senator Samuel M. Ralston of Indiana, Taggart's candidate, is to be the heir apparent, with Smith to be proposed for the vice presidency. Ralston was one of the "eligibles" named by William Jennings Bryan in his spectacular effort yesterday to swing the convention to one of his own choosing. The Democratic organization in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York would just as soon see Ralston get it as anyone if Smith is eliminated. As the delegates assembled in the garden there were reports too that McAdoo's managers had succeeded in making some headway in Carter Glass' delegation of Virginians and might "pick up" a few votes there in the early balloting. Chairman Walsh began hammering for order at 10:30 o'clock at which time only half the delegates were in their seats. 33 1-2 Smith. Michigan—Passed. Minnesota—1 Cox; 1 J. W. Governor Smith's managers sat tight and kept his strength around what it has been for the last score of ballots—around 320. Senator Swanson, manager for Senator Glass of Virginia, denied at noon that Senator Glass had released his Virginia delegation of 24, but reports that he had done so persisted in spite of the denial. These reports were lent further weight by a caucus taken among the Virginians right after the 46th ballot. Sixteen of the 24 were said to favor McAdoo, but decided to stick to Glass until the Old Dominion could present a united front on some candidate. Simultaneously with McAdoo's drop, rumors became current on the garden floor that David Ladd lockwell, McAdoo's pre-convention and floor manager, was to be displaced. These reports could not be confirmed. McAdoo, accompanied by B. M. Baruch and T. J. Chadbourne, were in conference in a hotel across the street from the garden. (By George R. Holmes) (L. N. S. Staff Correspondent) MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, NEW YORK, July 3.—Plainly out to set a new record in balloting for a presidential nomination, delegates to the Democratic national The Democratic organization in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York would just as soon see Ralston get it anyone if Smith is eliminated. Both Thomas Taggart of Indiana and Governor Brough of Arkansas were busy on the floor during the balloting, lining up secondary choice strength for Ralston and Robinson, respectively. CHARGES CRUELTY Joining in the divorce epidemic which broke out at the county courthouse today following the June rush for marriage licenses, Mrs. Addie L. Prather of Anaheim, brought suit for divorce from Charles O. Prather who she charged with cruelty. For 2 years after their marriage at Yorba Linda Aug. 22, '22 the two lived with his parents over her protest, she said. Finally the couple moved across the street, but her husband would frequently go to his parents' home for his meals, leaving her at home with the meal waiting and no word from him, she added. She accused her husband's brother of misconduct at the Prather home. Three wives and one husband were plaintiffs in divorce actions filed today. Last July set a record for the number of divorces, 23 an average of one a day for the time the courts were in session. Advertising as an art has reached its limit.
