PREDICT ENGLAND
TO BE DRY SOON
"Pussyfoot" Johnson, who
speaks at the White Temple Sunday evening as a representative of
the Anti-Saloon League of America in England, whither he had
gone on invitation of the "United
Kingdom Alliance," was the measure of starting an agitation which it is
predicted will make England dry
by 1930.
His work stirred up such an opposition among the wets that he
was mobbed in London; but this
attempt of the wets to suppress
his propaganda only served to give
it the wider publicity.
Of old it was said, "The Blood
of the Martyrs was the seed of the
church," and so, the persecution
of "Pussyfoot" Johnson by those
antagonistic to the Prohibition reform lifted the movement, which
until then had attracted but little
attention, into national prominence.
The tragedy which resulted in
the loss of his eye by moh vigilance
has made the name of Pussyfoot
Johnson well-nigh a household
word, clear around the world.
Wherever the English language is
spoken, Pussyfoot Johnson is defamed by wets, and lauded by
dryn.
The revulsion of popular feeling in England following his mistreatment and rough handling, by a wet mob, is astonishing.
Baron Birkenhead, Lord Chancellor, in a public address to a vast assembly in London, referring to the mobbing of Pussy-foot said, "It is profoundly to be regretted that a citizen of the United States should be subjected to such an outrage. Pussyfoot Johnson was invited here by an association of English people who share his views. He was as much entitled to express his opinion as the Lord Chancellor would be in the United States, if invited there by an American Association."

Baron Birkenhead, Lord Chancellor, in a public address to a vast assembly in London, referring to the mobbing of Pussyfoot said, "It is profoundly to be regretted that a citizen of the United States should be subjected to such an outrage. Pussyfoot Johnson was invited here by an association of English people who share his views. He was as much entitled to express his opinion as the Lord Chancellor would be in the United States. If invited there by an American Association, Assailed by overwhelming odds, Mr. Johnson did all a man could do to defend himself, and overwhelmed by numbers which should not be employed against a man of his age, he behaved as a sportsman, a gentleman and a brave citizen of the United States. Hereafter, however, unpopular his views might be. Pussyfoot Johnson need never fear but that he will obtain a fair hearing from the people of England."
This incident would undoubtedly have become an occasion for an exchange of diplomatic notes between the United States and England, but for the fact that Pussyfoot though a victim of a terrible tragedy, like the game sportsman that he is, accepted the situation without resentment. His fine spirit completely won the hearts of the English people. Sympathetic friends paid all of Johnson's hospital expenses, and by popular contribution a large fund was presented to him. Pussyfoot received it with thanks, and immediately turned it over to a noted hospital for the blind.
Commenting upon the incident,
a leading newspaper declared,
"There has been a tremendous revolution against the liquor traffic in Great Britain as the result of the cowardly assault of a mob of hoodlums on William E. ("Pussyfoot") Johnson, of Westerville, Ohio, the American Anti-Saloon League representative in England. Just a generation ago, the American liquor traffic in America was put on the toboggan by just such conduct. This London mob has sealed the doom of the liquor traffic in Europe. It will intensify the determination of both American and British Prohibitionists that the British people shall receive ample and correct information regarding Prohibition and its achievements in America."
Rev. A. J. Cook of Capetown, after his recent tour of South Africa and Rhodesia with Mr. Johnson, has this to say of him:
"Mr. Johnson's delightful personality and his proved reputation as a good sport has not only created large numbers of pleasant friendships throughout our land, but has put the whole question of refosm in a better aspect in the eyes of opponents as well as of friends."
