50,000 ACRES OF FOREST LAND BURN
SAN FRANCISCO, June 26.
More than 50,000 acres of field and forest land in Santa Clara-co, lies desolate today, with prospects that as much again will be burned over as hundreds of fire fighters, handicapped by the recent drought, vainly seek to stem one of the most disastrous fires in 50 years, which is now threatening historic Lick Observatory, on Mount Hamilton.
The Santa Clara conflagration, a solid wall of fire more than 15 miles wide, is but one of a dozen sweeping thru various parts of the state, but half of which are under control.
Thousands of volunteer fire fighters are being rushed to the various localities.

PALM-ST. PAVING
BLOCKS AIRLINE
The grading and oiling of So. Palm-st may prove a bombshell against realizing within a year or two the plan for a county trunk highway 10 Orange-co harbor via this street it was revealed today when Secretary George W. Reid of the Ambeim C. of C. said he would interview Supervisor Tom Talbert regarding the paving of the piece southward from Ball-rd as soon as the C. of C. committees are re-organized, following the election of six new directors. The new trunk road will be practically under way in 10 days, when the paving of two miles of Fairview ave northward from Newport, Bay-rd starts.
If the road is thoroly graded and oiled and not gravelled, the county will have to wait for six months or a year before doing anything. If, on the other hand, it gravels the read now while it is torn up, much time will be gained, because the paving will have to have a gravel base anyhow, whether asphalt or concrete. The gravel cannot be piled on top of a hard oiled surface, but the latter will have to be torn up again.
Supervisor W. M. Schumacher has in his district only the small section from Ball-rd north to the city limits. It has not yet been oiled, but will be soon.

If it were not so, would it have grown from one small Store in 1902, to a Nation-Wide Institution of 475 Department Stores in 1923?
If it were not so, would it have been possible for its annual business to increase in less than a quarter of a century, from $28,898 to over $50,000,000?
If it were not so, would it be reasonably sure of doing the stupendous business in 1923, of approximately $65,000,000?
If it were not so, would it today be the choice of more than a million families in 33 States?
If it were not so, would it have sold nearly 1,404,000 pairs of men's overall in 1922, and 2,534,087 pairs of shoes, and 2,672,835 yards of percale, and 1,225,000 hair nets and other goods in equally large quantities?
